My brother turned in his bike and bought a wing. It is in storage at the dealer in Boston until better riding weather. He can get accessories installed at time of delivery at dealer cost, and is getting GPS, MP3, cruise. He didn't get airbag or ABS. Already has good gear. He is asking for advice on what people with goldwings would recommend. He will be riding two up alot. Specifically he is unsure about rider floorboards, passenger armrests, backrests, extra running lights, websites to check out, etc. His budget for farkles is about $1500.

He is 59, rides conservatively, and is looking at weekend rides mostly, maybe a ride down to the Honda Hoot. he likes his luxury. I suggested a custom seat, but he doesn't want to spend a grand at this point on it.

Suggestions welcome. TIA.

SPU,

I'm not a wing owner but Cruiser Customizing has a wing specific web site here that he may want to check out. Good luck to him with his new bike. I like a person who goes out holiday shopping and comes back with a little something for himself.... :)

First three things I put on my Gold Wing were safety items:

1) headlight modulator (Kisan)

2) brake light flasher (Kisan)

3) under-fairing dual air horns (forgot mfr)

After that, there's no shortage of Gold Wing forums and websites that will happily dispense farkle advice.

(I just love watching the expression on people's faces when I tell them that my other bike has reverse gear, 4-speaker stereo, intercom, CB, iPod wired in and enough luggage space to actually take a Sig-O away for the weekend.)

I assume you are talking about a GL1800 which is a very good touring bike except that it has a mediocre ride (not nearly as good as the FJR) due to very wimpy fork and shock springs. Unless your brother and his passenger are very light weight he should change the springs at both ends and it would be even better to replace the rear shock since the damping on the OEM isn't very good either. Traxxion seems to be making the best suspension upgrades for the GL1800.

I also own a Wing so will chime in here. Forget the passenger armrests as they are nothing more than a pain. The Backoff tail light modulator is good along with must have Kuryakyn (Ergo II with Dually ISO-Pegs) foot pegs. Bag liners for easy take off into hotel room. Lower fog lamps. Allen wrenches. Headsets for two up riding, makes the wife happy. Other than that it's complete as far as I'm concerned.

Tell him to check out www.GL1800riders.com. Its the best board for the Goldwing. Honda offers an air foil that mounts on the trunk, it has a great brake light on it. A good thing to add. Lights in the trunk and saddle bags, a power outlet in the left front storage compartment and in the trunk to power/charge things. Tire pressure monitor. Driving lights. Front fender extender. If he is going to ride 2 up a lot, he will need helmets with headsets so he can use the intercom and listen to the tunes. Honda offers the headsets and J&M makes them already installed in Arai helmets( these are not cheap, $500-600 each but a good investment at time of purchase as most dealers give a discount on them, and frankly the intercom and CB are pretty un useable without the) Tell him to add the CB radio if he plans to do and group riding and /or traveling, again it is not cheap, but it is so well integrated on the bike it makes it a good investment. ;)

I use my Goldwing only if my wife and I are going out for a 300 to 400 miles ride and of course trips. If I'm riding solo, well then you know I'm on the FJR. With that in mind I have to disagree with an earlier comment about passenger armrest. My wife probably wouldn't get on ours if I removed the armrest. It gives the passenger a place for their arms to rest and more importantly it give the passenger a sense of security to be enclosed by the armrest. You can also add a drink holder to the armrest.

For dual riding on trips and even long day rides you never seem to have enough room for all the jackets, rain gear, tools, etc. you need even on a Goldwing. I would get a Kuryakyn luggage rack and their matched bag. Great products and they look good on the bike.

He absolutely needs to get one of these:

And - although blondes pretty much go with any color - you didn't mention the color of his bike - so this one might match his bike color better:

Forget the trunk rack. The load is limited to about 3 pounds to prevent ABS cracking and it makes cleaning the trunk area a real PITA unless he removes it each time.

Get:

Kisan spoiler light/brake modulator (instead of a tail light wig-wag)

Kisan headlight modulator

Superbrace

CB (if he rides with anyone else)

avoid the cd changer and go with a Sirius receiver for music

Upgrade the shocks and springs

The light mod's are a possible. It does not need a new horn and probably other than the helmet speakers it doesn't need anything. Tell him to save his money. The beauty of the wing is you don't need anything. I had one and put 40k miles on it in 18 months. I was going to put the fog lights on but it doesn't need it. The stock lights are awesome. I bought rear speakers, the helmet speakers, and xm radio. I also bought highway pegs, they would be nice. I had floor boards for me but they scraped and made access to the brake difficult so they came off. Just ride, you will know soon enough if there is something you need. Everett

Dayum MikeYork! I would forget the lights, rack, suspension and all the other suggestions. Stick a tuning fork logo on either of those ***** and I would PUSH that GoldWing around any day!

Oh, almost forgot. Tell the brother to buy himself a microfiber cloth and a can of Honda Cleaner to carry on the wing. Essential equipment for removing the high volume of bug guts collected on a wing.

GEE!! A WING? That is a Rolls-Royce on two wheels! I am sure there are hundreds of goodies out there but my dream wing would be one with a Motorvation side car with satellite tv!
