Camping at NAFO?

I camped at both CFR and EOM last September, and wouldn't recommend it. For the following reasons:

  • Because you need to ride to the campsite AFTER the evenings festivities, you cannot drink.
  • You ride fully loaded almost all the time, and everywhere you go you're sitting by a window watching your bike to ensure nobody's stealing your stuff.
  • Assuming your campsite is 15 minutes from the hotel, you'll get at least an hour less sleep every night than anybody else you're partying with.
  • I missed 2 of the 3 group rides I wanted to join because they left from a resaurant instead of the hotel and I didn't show up at the hotel until after everybody had left for breakfast.

I am a veteran tent camper (2 month unsupported bicycle camping trip through Europe in my twenties, many shorter trips in Alberta and BC), hundreds of motorcycle (highway and/or wilderness) camping trips, many hiking trips, and even a couple of camping trips in cross-country skis. I am well prepared, and although I stayed dry, because my gear was almost always packed on the bike while the sun was up, my tent was always wet (heavy rain or almost as heavy dew most nights).

I couldn't have afforded the trip if I hadn't camped, but in hindsight I'd stay where the group's staying while at the rally, and camp on the trips to/from.

Chris

I'll be camping at the Coors Brewery on Thursday. Anyone is welcome to join. Can't guarantee I'll remember your name Friday morning...

Or make sure someone who is going and in on the plan changes has your cell number. Just a thought?!?!

I agree with clsonfjr above. I love to camp, and camping while you are traveling to and from the gathering is a way to add to the adventure and save some money, but camping during the rally will put a damper on the social aspects of the experience.

It's definitely a pretty good curvy ride to camp in Golden Gate. Chief Hosa would be faster for sure. Chatfield State Park is 20 miles away but all interstate.Park fees are pretty fair.

Ken.

Chatfield might be a real good option. Easy ride down C470, maybe 20 minutes.

Suits me just fine...! :)

I just returned from attending the annual "Recluse Convention". We all sit in different corners of rooms and don't look at (or, converse) with any other attendees. Satisfying...

May be best to just be a NAFO 'lurker'...?

In case anybody's still checking this thread . . . I just Googled "national forests colorado" and it looks like half of the state in that area is one national forest or another. If you don't know, you can camp in any N.F. and you won't be hassled. Might mean rolling up your tent, bags, etc. every morning, and like somebody said before, keeping the eagle eye on your bike. On the other hand, I'm hoping the presence of hundreds of FJR folks will carry a certain level of security--like a big "neighborhood watch." I'm thinking my plan will be to try to catch a bit of the NAFO as I "do" the Rockies all the way up to Glacier N.P. and Canada, all camping. Since my plans and dates will be pretty fluid, I'm not making any reservations, room or campground, and if I can't get a room (make that a reasonable room) in or around Golden, I'll be sleeping on dirt there too. Don't think it'll kill me.

That's funny, but sounds familiar. I've had similar experiences over the years. I travel alone most of the time, so have to go out of my way to schmooze when I get to rallies sometimes. I usually meet more people in a camping setting than at the hotel/motel scene.

I forgot to post this last week, but I just booked a Yurt (a canvas cabin that sleeps 4) at Bear Creek Lake Park.

Bear Creek's Website

Currently, there is only one Yurt in the campground but they will have another one built by the time of NAFO and are reserving it now so act fast. At $30 per night split 4 ways, it's quite a bargain. And the park is less than 8 miles from the Marriott - all interstate. Much like a cabin, you can leave your gear locked up in the yurt.

Well, sometimes it takes me a while to warm up to new people, but I'm basically a social person and staying at the venue makes it easier for me. Besides, how else are you going to find out about all those new farkles that you didn't know you needed?

Well Mr. Scarecrow, when I followed you along the Yellow Brick Road the time you went to pick up your brain, remember? :bleh:

You toss 'em up and I'll hit 'em!

I like the idea of some camping too. Could be that several riders might decide to camp. I’d like to take a week or so and tour the state on my bike. I’m kinda wondering if there are others planning to camp/motel and tour for a while before or after the meet.
Anyway, here’s a CDNR link:

https://parks.state.co.us/parksquickfind

I’m also kinda wondering if anyone is planning to. …whispering now…”trailer” their FJR and a dirt/dualsport bike out there? Forgive the highjack. Will start another thread if response requires.
If I were planning to camp for this event, I would consider Cold Springs Campground approximately 30 miles from Golden along the Peak to Peak Hwy. Probably not the closest campground to Golden, but an excellent ride to and from. With easy access from the Hwy, at 9,200 feet elevation, it will provide a welcome escape from the mid summer heat. Within walking distance, the newly built Gilpin County recreation center could provide an opportunity to catch a hot shower. 5 miles from Blackhawk/Central City, plenty to see and do here including gambling, restaurants, etc.

Cold Springs Campground is located about four miles north of Blackhawk on Highway 119 (Peak to Peak Hwy) at an elevation of 9,200 feet. From Golden, take US 6 (Clear Creek Canyon) to Hwy 119. North on Hwy 119 to Blackhawk. Continue north on 119 approximately four miles to the campground. Alternatively, from Golden, take Hwy 46 (Golden Gate Canyon) to Hwy 119. South on Hwy 119 to campground. Both routes are excellent rides. Golden Gate Canyon has less traffic. Early reservations are highly recommended!

"Do you like camping near a bubbling cascade? Do you like camping near a mountain pond? Do you like camping by a spectacular mountain view? Would you like to enjoy all three of these features and also be next to Colorado's second-largest protected wilderness? Relish all of the above at Cold Springs Campground."

According to my "Woodall's " tenting directory I would check out Golden Gate Canyon State Park. It is about 15 miles west of Golden. It has 164 sites, 32 with elec. and 132 with no hook ups. You can find it on the state map.

My Woodall book is 6 years old so you may want to call to check it out. However I doubt that a state park would dissappear.

If I make it out to the Rally that is probably the place that I will try to stay.

+1 Dat. I lived in Denver for a year and really loved this state park.

Golden Gate will be close and is a beautiful park. You may want to camp on the lower camp ground ( Reverends Ridge?) that has the RV spaces. The upper campground ( Aspen Meadows?) IIRC is on dirt road and has a steep hill with some campsites being walk in.

This would be a good option and was the first one I thought of when I read the subject line.

Thanks for your input, I will keep your suggestion in mind.
