Great news RfH, glad things continue to improve for your Pops.

A Multistrada...he's got some teenager left in him yet! Awesome!

A good idea to start out with a newer bike. I doubt he would be truly happy with a repaired bike. Depending on what had to be done, I suspect he would never be totally comfortable on it. I hope you were able to swap out the seat, rear suspension and other aftermarket goodies before they carted it away. If I remember correctly (not sure), the seat was color coordinated for the '07 so probably won't look great on the next FJR but you could at least flog it on the forum and get a good downpayment on the next seat. Either that or I could sell him my lightly used '07 - a mere 163,000 miles on it.

Good luck and keep us up-to-date on healing progress and replacement bike purchase adventures! (You might have to start a new thread on that.)

Friend of mine has a Multistrada (after many years of FJRs). Says it's an absolute hoot to ride (when he's not got his wife on the back).

BUT adjusting the chain is a nightmare and too frequent (yes, he does lubricate it frequently) and he's had quite a few random problems. Certainly not FJR reliability.

KTM Baby!!!

Just kidding. Very happy to hear he is improving.

He should test ride the RT. With the boxer motor the center of gravity is so much lower and is not nearly as top heavy as the FJR . Might just be an easier bike for him to ride, worth a test ride anyway.

I lust over Ducati every once in a while but then I hear about ownership nightmares ($$) and remember how nice it is to have bikes that are much more reliable.

I delivered the Cards to Dad today. He was having a Bad Day and looked like hell. I am not feeling too positive about his condition right now. Not gonna get into it right now.

But...

I would open the envelopes and hand the cards to Dad. He would read them to himself, he did not have enough breath to spare to read them out loud.

I tried to read the wonderful things all of you had added to those cards but I got choked up and couldn't speak. My son read them all to us.

You folks are the best. I cannot even begin to thank you all for what you did. Pop was moved, all of us appreciate everything.

Got home tonight and found more in the mailbox. I don't know what to say.

Sorry to hear it wasn't a good day for Pops. We are all pulling for him and you Andrew and I'm sure I speak for all when I say we wish we could help more.

My son has called me Pops for years and now it means even more to me.

Lots of folks are pulling for your Pops real hard now.

Andrew, I wasn't supposed to make it several times... I found out a year after the accident that a riding mentor friend of mine had come every morning to visit me in the hospital on his way to work... when I thanked him, he said that he really didn't know if I'd still be around the next day or not and that's why he kept coming... because he wanted to be there till the very end. Your dad had a bad accident and is dealing with the aftermath of it and there are gonna be tough times for sure... but he can make it through this... hell, he raised you so we know he can overcome! ;) Don't go to the dark place... keep your energy on focusing on healing and small achievements... doesn't have to be a big thing... little things add up to the big things. Hang tight, my friend.

The question we all want to ask but nobody has...Is the '07 repairable. If not, is he going to get a nice shiny black 2017??

I'm guessing he's still hurting way too much to consider riding right now but I bet he will be twitchy to get going again pretty soon. I never met the man but your descriptions and ride reports tell me that he isn't giving up on it as long as he is physically able to ride! (I don't suppose I would, either.)

Best wishes to Pops!!!
While I am sure the bike was repairable, Pop and I decided to let them total it. It left my house on a flat bed wrecker today.

Yes, he is hurting. He is not hurting too much to be thinking about his Next Bike. I am obligated to see that he considers all available options. I would like for him to look at the BMW R1200RT and he mentioned wanting to look at a Ducati Multistrada. That surprised me.

Money will certainly be a factor. If money is too tight, he will end up with my '15ES and I will buy a new FJR. What I think we both want is for him to get a '16ES. But we are going to explore our options, there are some good, lightly used Gen3s and even some Gen2s that would be very inexpensive.

I am hoping to see him on a '16ES.
I have a '11 RT that I am going to be putting up for sale. Love the bike, but wanted to be able to do light dirt, so I moved over to a Tenere.

An Update.

Pop had two surgeries today. Right Shoulder, Fixed. Lungs, Fixed. Right lung was fine. Left lung had a fold that was allowing fluid to build up in a pocket. This was bad in several ways. All Good now.

They say he should recover quickly since they fixed his lungs, should come home this week. I hope that is true. 8 to 10 weeks of recovery for the shoulder.

A better update.

Pop has been released. He is on his way home now. He will spend almost 3 hours in the passenger seat of his truck with my Mom driving him so he will probably be a nervous wreck when he finally gets home.

I will be delivering some more cards this evening. Thank you all for...Everything.

Way cool, glad to hear he is out, a guy could get real sick in the hospital.

Things will just get better every day now. :)
