"Howie Checkin' In -- just wakin' up from a heat-induced mini-coma!/snip/

The first 3 hours of the ride were pretty okay, temperature-wise, but about 1pm, it seemed like the temps soared about 30 degrees more and right about the time Riclet and I split off from Sergeantnic at the end of the festivities, I was worrying about my own abilities to handle the heat. It was fukin' BRUTAL!

/snip/
I suffered from that heat induced coma too. After I split off from fljab and DaveB, I stopped to check on the workshop (my man-cave) and stayed a bit too long. The heat got to me and on the ride out I laid the FJR down in some 6" deep sand. No real damage, but I had a heck of a time getting her back up. This was the first time I had the FJR back on that sand road and and a combination of the sand and delirium from the heat took me down. Normallly on the Tiger, I can just blip the throttle to keep the front wheel up on top of the sand but not with the street tires of the FJR. At least now I know what points hit first when its on its side. Hopefully this is the first and last time that happens!

/snip/...and here he is. Bout time RZ! :)

/snip/
This should have been a foreshadowing of things to come - very rarily am I ever the last to arrive. Sorry guys, but I was just giving you all a chance to get aquainted :D

Anyways, it was great to hang with you guys and will plan to do it again soon. Thanks to Sergeantnic for being our fearless leader - you did a great job.

Sorry to hear about the drop, it's amazing how quickly the big bugger can go down

I drank plenty of water but I also drank plenty of Gatorade, which I think helps with the electrlytes

Damn Mark,

Sorry to hear you dropped the feejer. Hope it faired well.

The heat didn't affect me nearly as much as I thought it would but I was definately wooped when I got home.

Hopefully our next ride won't be as warm. I'm thinking either Aug 22 or Sept 5. I'm gone the weekend between.

Both days are Sundays. So post up which day works better for you and I'll get a thread started.

We will do a Floral City run. My normal starting point is the Marathon Gas station located on Hyw 54.

22911 State Road 54

Lutz, FL 33549-6932

But I we also stop at the Hess gas station on the corner of Hwy 50 and Spring Lake Hwy.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=28.522767,-8...=17&iwloc=A

So we could set the primary meetup spot for folks coming over from Orlando / Lakeland as the first stop and then any northern people can meet us at the Hwy 50 stop. You would only miss a few roads in the beginning.

No worries. I didn't give the bike a real close inspection but so far all I could see is a few nicks in the paint at the bottom of the side case lid. I guess there must have been some stones mixed in with the sand right there

I think what saved her was when I started loosing it, I stuck my leg out like I was riding a berm on a dirt bike. The only problem is, this ain't no dirt bike and I could only hold it up for so long. The good thing is, I was practically stopped by the time the side made contact.

Floral City should be nice for the next run.

Hey guys,

At lunch the other day, some of you were talking about riding gear (the moisture wicking stuff) made by maybe LD-Rider or LD-Comfort or something like that. I also remember someone (maybe Jim???) say some other company sells similar clothing for about 1/3 that price. That's more my style, so I would like to know who that company/vendor was so I can order some.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have started wearing a shirt under my jacket that is a synthetic blend. I get mine from the North Face outlet on I-Drive. The stuff they get in is usually about 50% off, then they mark it down from there. I pay around $15-20 for these shirts. The other day, when we were riding in the oven, my shirt was pretty much dry every time I took my jacket off. If I had been wearing a cotton tee shirt, it would have been damp before the ride even began. I was thinking about getting some leggings, made out of the same stuff, to wear under my jeans, but since jeans don't offer any type of protection, I'm in the market for some vented riding pants with the armor built in. Like you said...trying to do it on a budget. :)

Jim has the LD-Comfort shorts. He really likes them. Said they made a huge difference when he rode to Sturgis and back last year. If I remember right they sell for around $45. Here's the link to their site.

https://www.ldcomfort.com/

I've been using a pair of bicycle shorts that work pretty good. I don't know if they wick away the moisture as well as LD-Comfort shorts but they seem to help keep me more comfortable on long rides with my stock seat.

Yes, I had said that I don't own the LD-Comfort's but instead wear a set of Alpinestars synthetic shorts under my riding pants in hot weather. They are much better than regular cotton types IMO. I did get mine on clearance somewhere - I think New Enough (www.newenough.com) for a much better price.

Now, to compare to LD-Comforts:

> Many people swear by these but I have not owned any - yet; I will someday because you can't discount the advice of exceptional LD riders when most agree on this, but YMMV as always.

> My Alpinestars work great for what I used them for like on that hot friggin' ride we did a couple weeks ago.

I do not own a synthetic T shirt. I usually take one of my many old T shirts and cut the sleeves, slit the neck, and wear them under a mesh jacket, but the other day on our ride I had just a regular uncut T.

Again, LD-Comforts are supposed to be the best so bear that in mind...

I thought this thread was about riding, not underwear, when are we riding again? get r done.
Well, you know, **** happens; you OK with that? At least we didn't see any sheep on this ride.

Besides, we did have a pretty good ride report with pictures!!

Howie - I'm surprised you didn't pull in and try to talk them into "renting" one for an hour!
