when any big multi like the fjr has one or more cylinders not firing the crankshaft speed varies wildly and very rapidly. That makes all the clearances in the engine such as between the inner and outer clutch basket, the primary gears, cam drive gears, balancer shaft drive and such to slam back and forth. than can cause quite a bit of ruckus. my old gs1100 (50k miles) would sometimes do that in the spring. it was loud enough that my friends would back up fearing for their safety.
