It's not so much that I can ride in colder weather with the heated liner than without (I could stay warm at -40 with enough layers on without the liner) but I stay comfortable at all cool to moderate temperatures.
And not only comfortable in terms of temperature but also in bulk. It's nice not to think about what layers you'll be grabbing or how they'll restrict your movement under your gear. Pretty much the same articles now each time out.

don forget, windchill only affects bare skin.

(now try to convince your brain that your legs can't possibly be cold at 37 degrees fahrenheit as they are knocking on the gas tank uncontrollably, because there is no bare skin showing...lol)

MNFJR05 - nice post - not far from ya in Milwaukee area, cold weather riding needs respect for sure...

With the Canyon Cages, I'm thinking the footguards will not be an option.....

Something not touched on or asked...... can you give your thoughts on the Mirror extensions you have in this pic....

Do they get the mirrors out to the side enough to get a better rear view ?!?! It looks like you get almost 2" outwards and upwards from the pics.....

Thanks

They work great for me.. After I added the MCL handlebar risers, I couldn't see anything in the Mirrors with the stock set up.

Are they pretty stable? I see the OP has wind deflectors mounted on the extensions....I'd very much like to do the same with driving lights. Not crazy about the look, and was thinking of having some spacers machined that would bring the mirror bases flush with the fairing for a light-mounting point. It would make more sense to use these and get the benefit of wider mirrors....

Warpdrv, they do a fine job of getting the mirrors up and out so I can see something other than my elbows. They are stable even with my air wings mounted on them. They don't get the mirrors out quite as far as the FZ1 mirrors end up but it makes the FJR mirrors serviceable.

I run the Cee-Baileys Tinted Sport-Shield and had no problem this past winter in a 5 day trip around New Mexico. Encountered temps in the single digits several times (early morning and late at night) without any issue. Warmed to the teens and low twenties in the afternoons. I used warm and and safe heated gear (running a PDM-60 w/ with a Clearwater "gauge".

I did a 500 mile day, rain almost the whole way. On the way back, it was supposed to clear, so I didn't put on rain gear. Hit a sooner-than-expected cold front, and thought I'd ride it out. Finally got too chilled and decided to stop for gas and coffee. As soon as I took my helmet off, the shakes set in. Couldn't even hold a cup of coffee for 10 minutes. Hypothermic. Stupid.

My riding in winter mod was moving from Woodbury, MN to Austin, TX in '03. Still too many liberals, but much warmer. YMMV.

I've been looking at that shield, too. How tall are you? Using risers of any kind? I just tried the V-Stream sport touring shield. Great-looking, but took it off after only a 15 minute test. I'm 6'2", 34" inseam, no risers. Buffeting was evident for me at every windshield height, and began at 30 mph. Got unbearable at slab speed. Too bad. The quality is fantastic.

March 10, 2011 a group of us went from Sacramento to Death Valley. Much of the trip was above 8000 feet elevation and we had a strong crosswind near Mammoth. Unbelieveably cold and the only time I ever needed the full volume of my Warm N Safe 90 watt jacket. Of course Madmike and the Bluestreeks are impervious to cold on Gen I FJRs.

I'm 5'-11" and running an MV riser. I like the sport shield. Buffeting @ 30 MPH - that sucks!

Starting this topic already just prolongs winter. And, the only thing the cold is good for? well, they say a pic is worth a thousand words....
