Well the second box got here today. Haven't plugged it in yet but assuming it works is there a quick and SIMPLE way to transfer files and acct info. I have a Belkin easy transfer cable but it is for Xp or Vista to win 7. Will it work for windows 10 machines???

Do I physically remove the drive from the old box and install it in the new box and then transfer stuff ???

I would like to do it myself to learn something but if it's a pain in the *** then I'm out.

Help a dummy and I'll buy the beer at the Reuben
Here's wut I would do....

While yer old ‘puter is still plugged in ‘n working, open yer browser; hopefully it’s Firefox or Chrome? Go to Google, and ask how to back up yer bookmarks. I usually back ‘em onto my desktop, so’z they’re easy to find later.

Once bookmarks are backed up, then plug in the new ‘puter and see if it boots this time?

If so, you may have to go through the steps I described previously in this here thread.

The easiest way to get all yer old stuff is to plug the old hard drive into the new ‘puter.

*Important* First you wanta have both ‘puters unplugged, and push in the power button for 10 seconds to release residual electricity. Then you wanta open ‘em up, and touch the metal sides of the case, to release any static electricity.

Generally, if you face a ‘puter, the motherboard is on the right side, so you wanta take the left cover off. Here’s the inside of my POS, $125 Dell Precision.

It came with an old spinning hard drive, (HDD) so I added a solid state drive (SSD) just like yer about to do.

In this pic, “A” is where the data (SATA) cables are plugged in, and “B” is the power to the drives. If you look closely at the cable ends, you’ll see they’re kinda “L” shaped, and can only plug in one way; just line up the "Ls".

Looks like my ‘puter has 7 SATA ports, and the red one goes to the main drive “C:/” which is the SSD drive below the HDD.

Basically, you wanta rip your old HDD, ‘n data cable outta yer ‘old ‘puter, and plug it into the new one.

Now that you got yer old drive in, boot it up, and click on the little yellow folder in the lower left, 'n this will expose your file structure. You may have to click on "this PC" to show yer old drive; here mine's "E:/" in there you'll have to go to "Users" and find yourself. Mine's Myself. (Now what I usually do is copy the whole user file onto the new drive, so now if yer old drive dies, you got all yer stuff.) Now you can go to your desktop, Documents, or Pictures to access yer stuff; SIMPLE!

BanjoBoy your post was excellent! I've been out of IT long enough now... that I can do it when I see it front of me.. but to provide advice via keyboard would be dangerous to Ray.

Damn near anything is dangerous to me.

I just spent most the day installing a ceiling fan. It worked the first time just fine so I put the room back together and was going to show my bride that it worked. flipped the switch and it made funny noises and then the smoke came out.

Friday I'll take it back to Lowes and use it for a suppository if I don't get a new one.

BanjoBoy to the rescue. He had it up and running in short order and I stayed out of the way.

Thanks to all that contributed thoughts and ideas.

It's an amazing group we have here. Never thought somebody would ride hundreds of miles to bail out a semi ludite. Thanks again.

Ya know, I wuz think'in, I dun forgot a few things.

1. I shoulda downloaded Adobe Reader, 'n made that yer default .pdf viewer.

2. I shoulda downloaded 'n installed Malwarebytes.

3. Most important, I shoulda learned you how do do Microsoft updates. (If'n ya don't already know how?)

Four easy steps, all LEFT CLICK.

Even if it says, it checked for updates this morning, it's always good to hit "check for updates" cuz it usually finds more.

A pox on all things Adobe.
I used to find Adobe Reader was a pretty good piece of software, even on the Windoze machine I had to use at work. Now it's become yet another bit of bloatware, having lost many of its useful features or possibly hidden them amongst the many unwanted "enhancements" that are put in there because they can.
Now I use Mac's built-in Preview as my default pdf viewer, not ideal, but far less irritating than Adobe.

As for updating the OS, so much simpler on the Mac. Something like;

"Excuse me sir, there's an updated OS available, would you like me to install it now or tonight when you are asleep?"

"Now please."

"Ok, give me a few minutes, and it will be done."

Not verbatim, but that's about how complex it is.

And the builtin Postscript support that came along with the NeXT OS purchase. Right? Print to PDF, create and edit in Preview.

It's been a week and the box does all it needs to do

faster and quieter. Appreciate all the opinions and high tech ideas but in the end the KISS system lives here. With any luck it will last as long as the last one and that will put me at 85 . From there who knows???
