*** DISCLAIMER: I am used to running sports tires. I run Michelin Pilot Powers bald between 3,000 and 4,000 miles. Bald meaning bald from side to side. Comments below should be read with this in mind.
Well, I mounted the Conti RoadAttacks yesterday and today it was time for some initial impression to see how these tires are. If I had to summerize in a single word: impressive!
Type and size:
Front: Conti RoadAttack Z 120/70ZR17
Rear: Conti RoadAttack B 180/55ZR17
Straight line stability: Very good. No decel wobbles, no weaving so far. Stays on course beautifully under hard braking.
Cornering stability: Excellent. Bike stays like on rails, no matter how bad the road surface. When braking in a turn, the bike doesn't stand up. No effort needed to keep your line, and a little push or pull on the bars is enough to make a change.
Turn-in: Very quick. Could be outright nervous for some, but it is just the way I like it. Very little effort needed to turn the bike in, but once in the turn it feels very planted.
Grip: Excellent so far. Haven't had any rain in my short test ride (thank God), but had no problem scrubbing the tire from side to side. It does feel a bit like it wants to slide a bit when fully banked over and at full power, but in a good, comfortable, I-am-in-control way.
Thread life: I have no clue just yet. If it is more than 4,000 miles, I am happy.
Balance: When mounting the tire, the front needed 10 grams and the rear 5 grams. No heavy spot marked on the tire.
Concerns: The only concern I have now is that after I get back from 45 minute playing, the tires felt pretty hot. I am guessing about 45C and it is only about 72F here at the moment. Considering these are ST tires, this could possibly mean that with my riding style in hot weather or with prolonged abuse, tire temperature could rise over 70C. Which is about when a ST tires starts smearing and loses its grip FAST. We will have to see. But that temp is a long time away, so I should be ok.
If these tires hold up to their promise of longelivity, I am a happy camper as these appear to be very good, and cheap tires. They're about a 100 bucks cheaper per set than Metzies.
Hope this is of help to some wanting to try these tires, but haven't found much info on them on the FJR (I know I didn't).
