Dealer has new 06AE - Price?

I stopped down at the local dealer to see if they still had any of their FJR's that I saw last year sitting around yet.

The only one they had left was a brand new 06 AE that's been on the floor since they got it. We talked for a bit and after taxes and what not he shot me a price of $11,200 with a 4 year YES included besides it having the 1 year manufacture warranty. I've seen people getting 08-09A around this forum OTD for that, without the YES included I think. I didn't really haggle prices or anything, I just wanted to see what they could do initially. I'm not really sure if this is a good deal or not.

While the machine is new, it still is a 5 year old model. And back then the bike could be purchased for less than $12,500 IIRC - you can search the board to be certain.

However, the retail price of the FJR has gone up in relation to the falling value of the US dollar, so the dealer is clearly thinking about what the bike is selling, based on a comparison with new.

And, there are AE's from '08 that have gone for about $10K.

Definitely not a great deal, though ir is an excellent machine.

I just purchased an '08 leftover AE 2 days ago for $10,299 OTD (no warranty though) I think I could have got it cheaper but I didn't want to lose out on getting it so I gave them the asking price (ebay)

I would buy a really nice used FJR for a better price and call it good. You can always go out and buy a YES warranty from one of several dealers that offer them for sale.

Man, that is one hard core dealer to keep it that long and not drop the price significantly. h34r:

Even tho the bike is "new" it still has a depreciation factor that is not in your favor.

Good Choice! That price is way too high, even for a New '06AE. You can do better!

Majic is right, and remember these things go 200k easy, so you can sometimes get a used one with a couple grand in accessories on it for a great price.

Go in there with 9000 cash and offer him 8500 without the YES (which as has been pointed out, you can get elsewhere). I'm betting he counter-offers @ 9000.

That's an excellent price. You don't mention if that comes with YES. If not, YES is a good purchase.

Palerider has got the idea........$9k tops........not a dime more.....the minute you sign the docs and turn the key its a used four year old bike.............its rapidly approaching the point where you start wondering about the seals etc holding up.......

I dunno about the prices Stateside ... but I bought my '06 AE in the crate in January of '08, for $10,500 Cdn out the door. That was when our dollar was in the 80-something cent range compared to the greenback, so it would have been under $10K US.

Add 2 yrs to the crate time... and I'd say your dealer was way overpriced on that bike.

Back in '08 Yammy was offering dealers in Canada $2500 bucks from the factory to clear the left back stuff from the floor (they may still be, since it's hard to sell new stuff if there's still last year's stuff to be had). Most of them put the money in their pockets, mine passed it along. The floor price on that bike was $12,000 Cdn if i recall correctly.

As others have said... keep looking; you can do better than that price on a left back or gently used model.

This is exactly the point. You can make that point with him (the seller) quite easily. Ask him what he would give you for that bike a week after you brought it home. Then compare that with what he'd give you for a used '09 with the same mileage.

His inability to move a bike should not be financially transferred to the buyer.

For what it's worth, I just picked up my new 2007 AE last week from Abernathy's Yamaha in Union City TN. The price advertised on the website was $8994 plus tax, title and tags. I thought for sure that they were going to play a game with me once I got there from Orlando, but they were straight forward and friendly. I added the 4 year extended warranty from Zurich for an additional $700. Not many deals like this out there, so jump if you can find one.

From Zurich? Why wasn't it from Yamaha (Y.E.S.)? This was a new bike.

I would have wanted the warranty extension from the manufacturer, not some 3rd party.

FWIW, you still may be able to get a 4 year YES contract extension from D&H (for less than $400) and cancel the Zurich one and get your money back. I'd look into that.

Some FJR riders have hundreds of thousands of miles on their FJRs.

To me, more to the point: do you like the bike? Do you think it's a good value? :huh:

You're missing an important point: The bikes in your garage have presumably been ridden; the bike in question has not been ridden for four years, and I think it's safe to say that the engine hasn't been turned over much in those four years. Seals need to be lubricated or they will over time dry out, stiffen and even crack. At minimum they will no longer be able to seal well. The battery is almost certainly weakened, if not gone, and I very much doubt that this dealer, who sounds like he's got his head up his ass, has changed the oil or other fluids, all of which deteriorate with time. I'd be suspicious of all the rubber parts in the brake and clutch lines after four years of sitting unused.

In this way, your used garaged bikes are actually a better bet than the bike that started this thread.
