So. Heres the short story of my electrical ghosts. A couple weeks ago I was getting ready to go to work. Started the bike then realized I forgot to put my backpack in the hard case, so shut it down. When I went to start it up again, it just made a clicking noise. Not a clicking like when the battery is dead, a more pronounced clicking noise. I couldnt get it started so drove to work. When I got back home I tried it again, same thing. The next day I had it towed to the shop I always go to. I've had 2 different bikes serviced there over the last 5 years. Theyve always been good to me.

A couple of days later, they tell me they found a bad relay, and had to order it from Japan. Last Friday, I talked to the shop and they got the relay back in, and the bike is starting, but...now there seems to be a problem with my brake lights lol. As you know the braking system is tied in to the starting system...gotta hold in the brake to start it (I have an AE). Whats happening now is the brake lights are always on, but go off when you engage the brake. So its opposite.

It sounds to me like theyve got something hooked up backwards, but Im not an electrician. Theyre now asking for schematics for my cruise control...like where its tied in to what. I told them its worked flawlessly for 20 months, its not that. I reminded them this new problem started when they wired in the new relay.

I just got off the phone with them again, and it gets even stranger. Just for ***** and giggles they put the old relay back in, and miraculously it started several times. But, the brake light issue is still there, and he's telling me it still makes that clicking noise whether on the old relay or the new one.

Ive got a call in to Hal (kaitsdad) who did the cruise install for me for some kind of schematics. But at this point, the bike is up on the rack, stripped to the frame, with the techs standing around scratching their heads. I was told the ONLY wiring thats been actually disconnected and re-connected is at the relay, and it only fits one way.

So. With that info, does anyone have any ideas?

edit: Just called them again to ask if theyve identified where exactly the clicking is coming from...he said its now back to the original problem. Brake lights are working fine, but he said its the relay thats clicking, located somewhere under the seat. In that area. As far as he knows, its the new one thats in there right now. He also said another 09 AE is in the shop for a tune up so the techs are comparing the wiring on them both, but the other one is bone stock where mine has cruise, hyperlights, and a fuzeblock.

Good Lord.

edit 2: All recalls have been done.

Did the dealer take the wires off the battery before changing the relay? And, is the cruise or brake light relay attached to the battery terminals?

I dont know if they did or not. I know the hyperlights are not connected directly to the battery (because I installed them) Im not sure about the cruise. Im still waiting for a call back from kaitsdad.

I believe I read that the S6 or S7 Spider connections may cause something like you are experiencing.

Good Luck with your fix...
I just read the first post of these threads and their symptoms are not the same as mine at all. I'll keep reading though.

Almost sounds like a toasted battery.
I would assume they eliminated that possibility since they went through everything with a voltmeter?

A voltmeter does not simulate a load... many bad batteries can show proper voltage and still be bad.
You are right. I'll add that to the list of things for them to check when I talk to them again. Thanks for that!

did they check if the clutch lever is working properly ???

<trying to put a moment of light heartedness to a stressful event :) >
*cough* Its an AE *cough*

hehe

What shop?
Ride Now off Thunderbird and the 101.

Did they happen to check and see if the tail lights are actually burnt out?
I would assume since they light up they arent?
Well, I don't have any specific experience with that shop but there is NO FREAKING WAY a Ride Now shop would ever touch my motorcycle. In the future, I HIGHLY recommend the small Yamaha shop in Casa Grande.

What did the average age of the techs at the shop seem to be?

+1, Gunny; our SkooterG is right on here, Ride Now would be the last shop on Earth that would ever touch my FJR. Only two people besides me work on my Miss Lucy Liu: 1) SkooterG, for what I can't do and 2) Kendall, at the Yamaha Shop in Casa Grande.

networkguy, I'm busier than Hell this week with chores (naturally, last week I was doing nothing but goofing off riding my bikes!); however, if I can lend a hand with my Jeep and moto trailer to get your bike down to Kendall at Casa Grande I'll do it for you!

OK point taken. And I super appreciate the offer. We'll see where its at at the end of the week. Ive been assured as of now the billing time clock for my bike was stopped at the 4 hour mark...which was surpassed the first day this started last week. So as of now Im into it for $600. Still ouch, but at least they've stopped the billing clock.

networkguy: I, Oso the dog and Son Seth leave to visit my Family in Orange, CA on Friday night 11/9 and I'll not be back in Chandler until late on Monday night 11/12. However, the rest of my week is wide open: 480-440-4666 or [email protected]

If you go this route, don't let Don take pictures! You'll end up wearing a pink tutu engaged in some kind of unnatural animal act.

Just sayin'.

Al.
