Kill switch comes in handy at a toll booth. Cruise up to the booth, kill the motor, hand the money over, thumb the kill switch back on, hit the starter.....GO.

Right hand never has to leave the hand grip. Just pull the coins out of the jacket pocket.
Exactly what I do at Mickey the F yer Getting Fatter Than Ever ' D's.

Make the order (switch off), ride to the window, engine cut off (immediately back on), pay, ride to the next window, put the millions of pounds of sugar burrito under the jacket, leave...

F'n damn burritos! half my 25 or so lbs overweight is F'n damn burritos!!!

Don't tell anyone! none of the moto chicks will like me!! bastiges ;)

Wait... Howie, WTF are you doing slowing down and paying "coin of the realm" at a tool booth for? You wanna get killed?

Don't you know that is dangerous? Don't they cover this in the newbie rider MSF courses? (see what I just did there? )

Any person that owns (and actually rides) a motorcycle should immediately and absolutely go online and sign up for a speed-pass. If you already have one for your cages, just make sure to register your bike's plate number to the existing pass. These things are the best freekin' thing since sliced bread for any MC rider. Even if you don't have the speed pass with you at the time, just so long as your plate number is registered with the Speed Pass folks, you just roll through the toll gate and don't give a rat's ass what the lights show, do NOT slow down and get yourself rear ended by some cretin in a pick'em up truck.

I sometimes keep my SP in my tank bag (on some of my bikes) and on the windshield of others. Sometimes it just doesn't register. Doesn't matter at all... they just read your plate number and automagically access the normal toll rate assuming it was their fault for not picking up your RFiD. BTW, this works for cars too. If you have the car's plate registered and forget to transfer the transponder to that car, don't worry... be happy, just roll the toll both. Why they don't just ditch all the transponders and go strictly by optical plate recognition is a mystery. I guess theyt wouldn't get to charge you the $5-10 for the silly transponder?

Oh, and don't kit the kill switch. Every time you do a litter of defenseless puppies dies.

They don't call it the KILL switch for nothing you know...

Every time I use the "Engine cut Off Switch" a know it all about everything (because he thinks he knows everything due to the fact he knows a little about technical stuff) dies...

Yeah! I use it all the time! ;)

This is sounding kind of personal. Are you okay? Is your self esteem hurting?

Kill switch is that red thingy on the right handlebar...use it or not...who gives a flying fook as long as you operate your vehicle safely? I use it...others obviously don't. Who cares??

My self esteem is just fine thank you :) but I'm not a passive / aggressive person :) I'm just the later :)

1. Pull up next to someone at a stop, reach over, and hit their kill switch.

Hijinks ensue!
I do the same thing, makes for great stories over the beer that I undoubtedly end up buying. Usually I'll point to something over their left shoulder and hit the kill switch, then motor off laughing my ass off as to how childish I can be! Still it's great fun. :p

You can tell it's cooling down and less riding is going on when a topic like this gains this much attention! B) now it's bothers me that I don't use the damn thing, I feel so un-safe, one hand on the bars Muther Fecker, thats me! :p

The Speedpass people would NOT allow me to do that when I asked about it. I had to get a separate one just for my two wheel vehicles. The upside is that most tolls are reduced for motorcycles. The downside is that you have to "rent" an additional transponder from them.

It must be different in different locales then, Scott. Here in NH I got my first two transponders for free when they first came out with the lanes, and paid only 5-6 bucks for the other two. They don't care what kind of vehicle you have under the thing, and don't discount for only two wheels. But the flip side is they do automatically bill you for a third axle if you pull a trailer thru the toll booth with the speed pass.

To continue the topic drift...

We got our E-Z Pass in Mass. Q & A with the E-Z Massholes:

  1. Can I use the transponder on a motorcycle?
Yes. Please be sure to follow the posted speed limit and drive through the center of the lane.
  2. Where do I mount the transponder on a motorcycle?
The transponder can be mounted on the windshield. If the motorcycle has no windshield it can be placed in a shirt or jacket pocket.

Never ever did the transponder work on my bike but always worked in a 4 wheel vehicle. Getting tired of the red lights and alarms (and a failing battery) we turned in the transponder and got a new one. This one has never worked on my bike either, no matter what the toll road or which state. Fortunately, they just look at the picture of my plate, match it up with our account and I'm good to go. Heck, I don't even really need to carry it except in NJ where they locked the toll gate closed and forced me to produce the E-Z Pass to prove I had one. They couldn't get it to work either even when they waved it directly under the sensor. Troll guy handed it back and manually opened the gate.

Mass E-Z threatens:

...If you receive the top yellow "Call E-ZPass" light it indicates the following: You were recorded as a violation and you are required to contact Customer Service, to determine why your toll transaction was not recorded. You are required to stop using your transponder until you have contacted Customer Service where your transponder was issued from and verified that your account is in good standing and that your transponder is working properly. If you disregard the message and continue to use your transponder, you will be issued violations. A violation in Massachusetts results in a $50.00 fine per occurrence.

I may just give up and open a NH account now that my travel rarely includes Ma. Oh ya, I gotta remember to add another car to our account!'

Us Northern transponder users have battery powered units. The Southerners, in particular the gulf coast states use passive transponders which can be problematic to get to work on a motorcycle so you must have a second dedicated motorcycle transponder.

Not any more. Got me a Speed Pass about 3 weeks ago when the bastards here decided to raise the toll rates on a 4 year old toll road. $1 more per trip-to-work if I pay cash, NO increase if I use a Speed Pass, so I finally bought one.

Funny thing is, it's 3 miles further on the toll road, but saves me 25 minutes!!!

God Bless Our Infrastructure!

Yep...got me one of those "passive" units. When I bought it, couldn't figure out how the hell to open it to insert a battery. Read the instructions and lo and behold -- NO battery!!

Unit would NOT work velcroed to the windshield, sitting in the glove box, tank bag or in my pocket, BUT, suction-cupped to the gas tank, it works like a charm! Must be using the metal tank as some sort of ground-plane for better reception by the toll-reader.

Have the Speed Pass linked to both bikes, both cars, and 3 station vehicles, and don't worry about carrying it everywhere with me. If I get flagged for "running a toll", I get auto-charged by the tag picture, as mentioned by FredW.

Let me tell ya how rare and lucky it is to get a Sun Pass RFID transponder to work like yours does. It is actually designed to use the properties of a GLASS windshield to work properly. If the transponder is stuck to glass and then removed it is designed to stop working. Sometimes you can get lucky and tape it to the glass windshield and have it work as long as it is in good contact with the glass. I have -ahem, heard, that you can tape the transponder to a small square of window glass and it will work on a bike.

Down here in Florida, there are 2 different passive Sun Pass models...the one you're referring to, which like an inspection sticker, is stuck to the glass...

The "Mini" -

...and the one I got, which suction-cups to attach to whichever vehicle you are driving...

The "Slim Portable"

The instructions are VERY clear on the "mini"...do NOT remove it once it's installed and they specifically state it will not work with a motorcycle or multiple vehicles. Made deciding which to get VERY easy, Although the "mini" is just $5, the "Slim Portable" was $25. Figured it was the smart buy, since you can't use the "mini" on multiple vehicles or bikes.

Technology moves on and I'm being left behind  I needed to research RFID stuff over a year ago and at that time the only transportation RFID tags that could be read at 8' - 16' were the mini types that needed to be stuck to the glass. Nice of SunPass to accommodate us with transportable units. I assume that these units are very new offerings from SunPass.

Let me clarify; My unit is an EZPass. I presumed that they are all in cahoots with each other. I believe my units are the passive RFID type.

I'd have to hazard a guess and say "yes". I had an earlier, battery-powered unit that worked just fine, but quit using the toll road to work about 3-4 years ago, when the economy took a dump AND the wife-unit retired. I simply couldn't justify the $15 a week to save myself some time getting to a from work, but now that things aren't quite as desperate, I jumped back in to the Sun Pass pool about 3 weeks ago, only to find my old unit was MIA and had to get a new one. At the time, the ONLY units available were the "mini" units that were claimed to NOT work on bikes, so I waited until something else was available. When there WAS a choice, the "Slim Portable" was the only other, so that's what I got. And like I stated earlier, it ONLY works when attached to the gas tank.

Ok, I'll add my data points.

I have my EZpass velcro'd to my clutch res. like this and it works every time. When I don't need it, I throw it in the glove box so undesireables can't steal it.

Oh yea, I also use my kill switch to shut the bike down every time.

What was this thread about again?

Same here (EZPass). More details than you can shake a stick at here

PS - I just searched thru my old tolls and discovered that we do in fact get a break on the motorcycle tolls. Nice!!

You learned me my something for today.
