Lee volunteered a route - 500+ miles of twisties - call it the EOM12 Insanity run... Wholly smokes, let me tell you, one wicked ride right there.
I was just messin' since it had a start/end at my house 81 miles NE of EOM. There seems to be some interest among those who relish a challenge (i.e. crazy people) so here's one from the motel. It has a few stretches to catch a break but not many. I'll make a GPX you can post. Call it "Five Twenty Five"...that's the mileage. I can knock out a few more of reasonable distance for normal people.

We did that stretch of 16 from Hungry Mother State Park up to Tazwell this past spring after a big night of drinking. I was hurting pretty good when we left :alcoholic: ...thought I was gonna puke :bad:

Ya, that one would do it. My favourite stretch of road.

Yep, great road. I got to do that Tazewell to Marion twice in 2006 on my FZ1. The first time I blew off a tricked out Aprilia and a month later with Sally on the back. No traffic to deal with at all, both times! I think Sally and I ran it in 07 EOM, but I don't recall much of that, rain perhaps? Looking forward to doing it again some day on the FJR.

If we ever move back EOM a month I'll be able to attend, but until then be safe and have fun! I'll try not to think of yinz having a good time.... Well, OK, I'll think of all yinz, but it will be down the list a little... :D

I'll be pretty thirsty after having droned the 650) miles to get there. A cold beer sounds great. Looking forward to meeting and seeing everybody. :clapping:
I'll save one or two for you. You won't be able to miss me. I'll be the one standing next to the Styrofoam Cooler full of Beer! :)

What's your ETA?
Thursday about a late suppertime...or later if griff and I stop too much or get a later start than expected.
I have to revise my reply to the above to "I don't know".

I have been thinking about a way to improve on a long day on the slab. I am proposing to make a long day on the slab longer by adding 2-laners in a great part of southern Indiana and some 2-laners in Kentucky that end up near Cumberland Falls SP to interrupt some of the slab. Griff is on his way to NERDS and says he might consider it. We'll see.

So if you keep standing next to the styrofoam cooler waiting for us...you might be pretty wasted by the time we get there...whenever that is. If you see two idiots from IL and IN staggering off the bike at about 10pm after 825 miles or so...that's us. I'll be on the FJR...I'm not sure what griff will be riding. ;)

No Problem Wheaton, I'll be around. We picked Wednesday for our arrival because it's a 717 miles ride for us and we decided to treat it like a bandaid and slab it ALL AT ONCE! Our butts will be hurting, (Insert your Hurting Butt Joke Here!) but, at least we'll get a good nights sleep and enjoy some rides while the herd trickles in on Thursday. We leave on Monday morning so we have plenty of time to leisurely take it all in. :)

It'll be my first time there on 2 wheels. Done it many times in a cage with the family. I had two nights reserved at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza / Casino in the area on my way home from SFO 09 but, just like Eureka Springs, it was going to be raining Buckets the whole time there so decided to cancel and head home with the plan to return when the sun was out. Let's hope we see plenty of sun! :clapping:

Considering the abundance of possibilities limiting yourself to 525 seemed pretty reasonable. EOM in Western NC needs to be at least a week long.

I'm of the normal sort, Lee & will be looking for routes way shorter than 525 miles. Are you route-meister this year? Giving Jeff a break?

New tires ordered for EOM...WooHoo :yahoo:

Nope, Jeff is still on the hot seat but has a lot going on so I'm trying to step up my assistance over past years. There are different types of routes in the making to choose from. Creating a route isn't that hard but making it work acceptably with different map versions, configuration settings and devices is tedious. Much anal-ness. :)

Thanks, Lee, for stepping up. Time has really slipped away from me on this, but we're going to pull it together.

We'll have a good variety of routes in typically EOM fashion.

Heidi - did you just volunteer to be the chief group ride coordinator? I'll have to check the post, but I think that's what is said. it's been such a crazy, busy year for Annette and I - we are so looking forward to seeing everyone that can make it to Hendersonville this year.

A few notes on routes as they currently stand...

* Lee's 525 challenge is being whittled down a tiny bit closer to 500.

* We are working on two(2) twisty routes in the 200-mile range.

* One scenic/2-up route that includes the best stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway (Asheville to Cherokee).

* One southern/lower elevation route to include the Dupont Forest area, upper S.C., and more where riding can be great, even when there's rain/fog in the higher elevations.

* Lee also wants to include a "Dragon/Cherohala" route for anyone bound and determined to "do the Dragon".

If there's something beyond the above that a substantial group wants, speak now. I could do hundreds of routes for that area, and I have about 50 routes in my personal stock for the Hendersonville/Pisgah area. But most people don't want to ride ALL the places I will.

:D

Waterfalls. I heard a request for waterfalls. Maybe rolled into a two up or scenic paced 150-200 miler?

There are just so many good roads and not nearly enough time.

New tires showed up for Vader - he's grinning ear to ear now as September grows near. Or is that me?

A big thanks to Jeff and Lee for working on these routes.

Last summer I coaxed Lee into exploring a "road" leading off the BRP parking lot at Craggy Gardens. It turned out to be one of the original construction acess roads used for materials transport 60+ years ago.

The only other motor vehicle we saw was the blade grader that had made its own parking spot off the side of the mountain. Truly awesome piece of road history, but NOT for the faint of heart. It had many 1st gear switchbacks that probably could not be done uphill on a FJR. I could include something like that in case Wayne wants to lose more valuables out of his top box.

:D

That hurts.

It's all fun and games until your being watched by two appalachian trail hikers bounce down a grown over goat path jeep trail next to them with your top box open and crap bouncing out all the way down the mountain. You wonder to yourself, "what's that rattling sound?"

I wonder if they liked my camera?

Just before this, someone mentioned how they were glad we didn't have to go up this trail...

Ten minutes later, there we were, rock spewing from the rear tires on the climb looking for my wallet, digital camera and a hat.

Why don't I have a Tenere in the garage yet.

A couple of the routes traverse US-276 which has some nice waterfalls right at the side of the road. They're only just west of Hendersonville so anyone can head over there for a quick ride. Don't even need a route...If you stay straight on US-64 W from the motel it runs into 276 about 20 miles out.

I could see where some might do other things than the routes. There's stuff to see and do in the area to have at it for years, much less one weekend.

Damn that sounds good! Can't wait for this EOM to get started! :clapping:

Hey, that's my back yard. When I can't get away for a whole day I just bounce around in a box that has 176, 64, 178, and 11 as the sides-East Fork, Glady Fork, Anything Forkish, Green River, Jeter Mtn, Wilson, Walnut Hollow, Rich Mtn. That's a great weather alternate plan. There's hours of awesome ridng in there and your never more than a stone throw from EOM HQ.

ZigZaging between 11 and 64 with 276, 178, 130/281, 107, 28 is addictive. Once you start up a road like 281 though it's hard to stop. Then you sneak on over to 215 on something twisty like Charleys Creek. Next thing you know you're in Canton. Then you might as well scoot up Beaverdam and 63 over to Trust for Lunch. You can't leave Trust without running up 209.............thump thump thump-honey we've got to get home before dark to..............

It takes a disciplined man to put together a "reasonable" route in this area. Good luck

Not revealing any hidden gems here I realize. Just enjoying how easy it is to get carried away round here.
