Yeah, it does seem so. But with the typical gathering in the AARP age range, being able to see names and know who you are talking to evidently is important. For smaller gatherings you will usually know most there, whereas at larger gatherings you will not know most by face walking in to the meet.
That's the reason for the nametag talk.
(But if the organizer or check-in help are so drunk on moonshine strawberries that they use a sharpy marker on the screen of their laptop, larger font size ain't gonna help them too much.)
