Fastest Tourer? FJR takes a respectable 6th place

Why was the Kawasaki Z1000SX Touring ranked higher than the FJR when it makes less HP (and I assume no faster top speed)? Also, is the K1400GTR supposed to be the Concourse...the bike pic didn't have the required panniers attached?
Yes the 1400 GTR is a Concours.

I have put enough miles on a K1300GT (>1k miles) to be surprised to see it in #2 position. It doesn't feel as fast as the FJR in normal driving, I had to beat the snot out of it to get it to go. Ohhhh, it has a 6 speed. Booooo, the 6 speed did not have the right ratio mix for the way I drive so I was constantly shifting 2 gears up or 2 gears down to get the performance and comfort I was looking for. The K1300 made my FJR look like an automatic.
A chain drive will let less HP perform better than a shaft drive but the chain is not as maintenance free as the shaft. At some point the chain will need cleaning, it will need adjusting, it will need replacing but a good oiler will help.

The comparison is amazing the way it includes apples, beef, artichokes and ghost peppers then declares a ranking scale

The article's purdie lame; if them over priced, fragile, pos BMWs iz soooo fast, why can't they win the Iron Butt Rally?

I say put em all on a road course (Nurburgring?) with competant riders of similar ability and see which bike can do a given amount of miles in the shortest time... that would sum up "fastest" no? ..they mention triple digit speeds... so it would have to be a track, and not just a nice twisty road... right?

I didnt see where they quantify how they got that "fastest" lineup figured out... I'm not just an FJR owner saying the FJR is the best... I'm saying "test... don't guess".

Anyone can parrot manufacturer specs and make assumptions... very poor journalism there.

Because it weighs a lot less. And that chain thing. And it has six gears, so while the powerband is a little narrower than ours, it can stay in it.

I have a friend with a Ninja 1000 who has ridden my FJR (I have not ridden his Ninja yet ... I'm not prepared to buy one yet!) and says the FJR is fast, but his Ninja's power is much more 'immediate'.

I don't think these three belong on the list:
Kawasaki Z1000SX

TouringTriumph Sprint

GTDucati Multistrada

With their low, non-adjustable windscreens, I don't see how you can consider these 'touring' rigs.
The Ninja and Multistrada have adjustable windshields.

... And any narrow minded folks ...
Aaaannnnnddddd they're coming out of the woodwork.

Hmmm...Sport Touring? Wonder how the fore mentioned bikes would do under the testing requirements provided by the Iron Butt Rally?

Oh wait... There has benn testing! 5 of the top 6 bikes were Yamaha FJRs. Touring suggest a marathon, not a sprint. I know at least 2 of those FJRs were over 150k at the time also.
I'd argue that the Iron Butt Rally is more about touring than sport. They don't have time to take all the twisty side roads, and instead focus on comfort over the long haul.

The term "sport-touring" is a broad category. Not quite Gold Wing .. not quite GSXR ... but there are a lot of bikes in that fit in that category. Some have more emphasis on Sport, some on Touring.

The '11 IBR you could say that, but each rally is different.

In the '13 IBR you had bonus' such as the top of Pikes Peak, I rode a road in Nevada called "Wild ***" that was dirt/gravel. Iggy rode the "Hess Road"

I think you are wrong about the "Touring" impression. It can be grueling on a bike and rider.

Who cares? This is about the extreme edge of the performance abilities of all of these bikes. I imagine very few riders ever see the top end of these bikes and if they do it is a rare occasion. If a rider is one who pushes the envelop on a regular basis, then a sport tourer is not the best choice of bikes. Again, who cares? This sort of info is about winning bar arguments.

The Kawi Z1K and the Duc meet their criteria, but they are not in the same class as the others, IMO. As for the rest, it's splitting the finest of hairs. Every one of those bikes is MUCHO powered and to purchase any one of them v/s the others strictly on the basis of power is missing the point of touring (even sport touring) entirely. They should be directed to the squid department and taken care of accordingly.

That there is a piece of my growing up. I have hundreds of hours on that exact model. I can hand crank start it, change the starter & clutch blindfolded and get the accessory belt on the PTO so that it stays on and doesn't slip. All in all this tractor was a major step up from the previous farm 'tractor' that ate hay, had exhaust that was smelly steaming piles and needed shoeing every 5 weeks.

Until someone can definitively identify what a SPORT-tourer or a sport-TOURER really is there can be no valid class of S-T bikes selected. Where is the Honda VF in the group that Visor Down selected?

Before this place went all PC ..... That comment would have earned somebody a punch in the face and death by jimmykicks.

I have to agree.

Because the FJR didn't get the top spot, a bunch of you are squawking like someone stood on your pee-pees.

We all bought the FJR for different reasons, but none of us bought FJRs because we thought the FJR was the fastest bike available.

The article isn't about real-world performance, so who the <expletive deleted> cares?
