I give the dealer a fair shot. I'm in there once per year for an inspection, and I have them mount new tires at least twice per year. I got ripped off with charges on both occasions this year, so I'll be looking for an alternative next year. As far as gear lube, it is offered at full retail, and no way!

Tom, I'm the same way. I buy misc stuff at the dealer just so they can stay open. They know me there. I really like having a local dealership here. But! At $24 a quart? HELL NO!!! :)

In fact, contrary to what some ******** believe, many people develop a loyalty after being treated fairly. That is worth much more in the long run than a quick profit via a screw job. Short sightedness in business is a big problem.
Recent story (trying to keep it short). Took a Mashall amp in to have it biased (it's a tube thing). The guy had told me he'd turn it around and have it ready for me the next day. An emergency job came up and he couldn't get to it so was to get it out Tuesday (closed Sun/Mon). No call, so I called on Wed. Someone else answered the phone (small independent shop) and explained the guy had broken his foot over the weekend and not been able to get to it. 2 weeks pass and I decided to drop by. They said he'd never gotten to it, so I just took it (no charge) but paid for a pair of power tubes he'd talked about trying (a tone thing).

2 days later I get a call from the guy. Seems he DID get it biased (it's done, don't do anything extra to it). I apologized and told him I'd be by to pay for the work. He said don't worry about it. I'd bought some tubes, so that was good enough. The tubes were about the same price I'd pay for them anywhere else. After about 5 minutes of my getting my brain around his "don't worry about it" billing process, I knew who I'd go to the next time I needed a master luthier.

Bottom line? Treat someone like they're special and they'll think your company is special.

Then there are all those people who believe that if they are not paying a premium price then they are not getting a premium product, and will buy the more expensive simply because it is.

The classic for this is in the cosmetic industry; offer the same stuff at a low or a high price, they sell much more of the higher price. This works for much that we consumers buy.

If Yamaha charged 20% less for their final drive oil than the Willy Group (or whatever they're called ;) ) charge for Willy GL-5, many would presume that Yamaha Molten Lard was inferior. Even if they charged the same, there would be an assumption that it should have a higher price because it is branded, therefor can't be as good.

I also hear plenty of rumours that a certain American motorcycle company charges a significant premium on much of its wares which are of no better quality than any other, and they keep selling the stuff.

Not saying anything about the morality, whether it's right or wrong, just a little bit about human nature.

I suppose we're all biased in our own way. Perhaps we have tubes inside? ("Valves" this side of the pond. I grew up using them, know a fair bit about them being biased :) )

Perhaps Yamaha is justified in charging so much for their lubricants. After all it is a product of there sprawling oil industry at the base of Mount Fuji.

I used to drive Land Rover Discovery few years ago and a whining sound emerged from the rear diff. The dealer took the oil sample from it and sent to factory. 3 weeks later they approved the claim and changed the diff on warranty, although the official warranty time of 2 y had already expired. Dealer said they had checked both the oil content and the metal particles in it. So you never know...

Right out of High School I worked in the packaging industry for awhile...

I can tell you first hand how after the order for a premium top shelf product was filled the excess product would fill a store brand container that sold for most times less than half the cost.

Do you really believe ANY manufacturer produces, packages, or exports it's particular brand of oil, coolant, etc??

I have an island in New Mexico for sale.

I believe that! My sister works in Walmart and tells me the same stories about their Great Value Brand.

I'll change and balance your tires for a six pack.

I work in the food packaging industry now. It's still true. High end store branded, company branded, food store branded, discount store branded, makes no difference. It's the same product off the same production line, just different packaging and different prices.

McDonald's just posted up on their billboards that they've sold over 30 million hamburgers! Now, they're opening up the package on their second pound of beef!

Johnny Carson got sued by McDonald's for a crazy sum of money for saying that joke. Johnny Carson won! :D

I hate McDonald's like poison!

Not just McDonalds...... my doctor says "eat this", "don't eat that" and NEVER, EVER eat fast food.

Wow, this was a painful thread to read, but I'm glad to see I can use the same gear oil (Mobil1) I use in my Harley.

Many folks claim their choice of lube has never given them any trouble. But I wonder, has anyone ever had a problem with their rear drive as a result of the lube?

And, even though I drink the synthetic koolaid, is there any advantage with it in the rear drive?

I'm new to the FJR, so I have a lot to learn.

Beary

Oh Dear God! Beary is going to get this thread send to the VIP section of NEPRT and get the key thrown away! :D

Clearly this thread has devolved even far enough for NEPRT. There is some good new info mixed in with some repetitive stuff though.
