I used magnets for the last year and it works fine. It isn't intuitive where to put the magnets, so before you glue stuff together dry fit it first. I used a kitchen cabinet closure set because the shape and length of the magnets were space saving and gave me the length needed. I finally replaced the glove box this summer. It is so expensive plus hard enough to change that in most cases I would say just Micky-Mouse the damn thing and be done with it.

Got a kick out of this as I was the OP. Bike had 25k on it... 3 and 1/2 years ago. (172k now)

I tried the velcro solution, but was much more pleased with the magnetic catch shown here. (Never mind the dirt)

Rivet a strick plate to the lid:





Then rivet a spring loaded magnet to the side:





Only popped open once- on the Haul Rd. in AK



I really like this solution because you push down on the lid and it pops open just a fraction of an inch, then lift it to open fully. It is not lockable, but then it does not set you back any $ that you would pay for a replacement.

Still functional... in a better sort of way!
