In a race, the M109R would win... for MAYBE the first 500 feet! After that, there's no contest. The FJR will whip it's butt soundly, and out-handle / outperform it in all areas. And that's judging based upon my 2004. I'll bet that newer models will whip it even more soundly!

I also tire of dragging the pegs, exhaust, and even hard points on the footpeg brackets where they bolt to the frame. You can push the M109R to turn quite sharply, but it really is not made to do it as the grinding will attest.

Gen 1 is actually faster. I read it somewhere so it must be true...

This is true. Lighter weight and shorter gearing make the 1st Gen quicker, which is what you are talking about in a drag race (not faster).

Hmmm... really?

Suzuki says M109 has 127 horsepower and 765 lbs or 6 lbs / hp

Even a 3rd Gen FJR is 145 hp and 644 lbs or a little over 4 lbs / hp.

I say the FJR wins the holeshot too.

Could be. I'm just going by my butt-dyno.

BTW, that 127 HP rating is at the crank. It's closer to 108 at the wheel, unmodified, from my experience. But it's the torque figure that counts for the holeshot. Mine (slightly modified) does about 119 torque, max. I'll dig out my dyno sheet to see what it's got down low.

EDIT: Here's my last dyno sheet.

Torque is power, but HP is Torque x rpm = actual ability to produce work.

FWIW - the FJR's engine produces ~92 lb*ft of max torque, but it does that at ~6000 rpm. In a drag race you wouldn't lug the engine down at 2-3k rpm where the long stroke V-twin has the torque advantage, You'd wind it up and launch at as high an rpm as you can and still keep the front from looping. When calculating the Power to weight ratio you use HP, not Torque.

Understood. The point is moot with me - I don't race! And even if the M109 did get the holeshot, it would not be in front for very long.

Now, against a HARDLEY, it's another story! :D

It's funny that nobody has really brought up the V-max, which is one of the few cruisers that in stock form should outrun an FJR in the 1/4 mile (barely). The Diavel looks to be a little quicker also in the 1/4 mile.

I currently own both an M109R and FJR1300. Love both bikes, but for different reasons. They are two completely different animals. My FJR makes a good commuter and grocery getter while my M109R makes a good cruising around town bike. The M109R gets way more attention. Actually the 9 gets all the attention. Never really had any comments on the FJR from anyone.

Of course the FJR is definitely faster, but the 9 is fast enough for what it is. With no wind protection, you really don't want to go that fast. I've had the 9 up to a 140 with lots of room left. Didn't see any point in going faster.

Here is my other style of bike. Love this thing, but I also love the FJR for it's functionality and being a bike that does everything quite well.

How is this five pages? I don't think we could even keep an FJR vs Concours thread going for five pages and over a year!
