Same key for mine today. During valve adjustment check at 25,000, I took the ignition switch out myself and took it to my dealer. Only took about 15 mins to swap out the electical section. Previously, I had mine apart to resolder the red wire. Even with the new switch, I am going to install the Brodie relay.

 
Folks, just an FYI for you. Our dealership has to keep the old switch/harness for 90 days before anything is done with it. If you have received a new set of keys with your recall work, make sure you get your old keys along with the cylinder. The dealerships HAVE to keep them awhile before they are sent back to MamaYama.

 
I just took my 08 in to the dealer to have the ignition switch replaced...the recall letter it stated that my original keys would work on the new ignition...I attempted to use my originals but thet didn't fit....Now I'll have to carry two sets of keys...

Why would you have a key made with 2 different profiles when the dealer should have fixed it correctly in the first place?
Because it was prior to the recall and my old switch had another issue: the little dirt/weather protective doors didn't close anymore on the old (original) switch). Cleaning didn't help. The locksmith told me it was toast.

So the one key with two profiles is a workable solution. The notch at the top is big enough to feel with gloves on and helps with orientation going into the ignition, tank lock, etc.

EDIT: Just read Ionbeam's response which was excellent. I am in several of his catagories. It isn't a perfect world despite our delusions to the contrary.
I'm sorry but Ionbeam's response was horrible. It may have been a valid solution for you but that wasn't the topic. Unlike your issue MRKSFJR just got shafted by his dealer....a "workaround" isn't the answer........it's a horrible solution for someone that just got a bad repair from the dealer.

There's a big difference between factual information and RELEVANT information.

I'm just sayin.

 
My dealer says they will change the whole switch and give me another key. I questioned this quoting the letter I got and they said they would have to cut out a lot of wires and would have to charge an hour labor. Hows that sound. Golden Triangle Power Sports in Beaumont Texas. If you make them mad no telling what they will do. They scare me. :dribble:

Had the ignition switch replaced today. Same key, all is well. She made it out of the shop with nothing more than greasy fingerprints all over the tank.

Feeling lucky. Got it back in 2 hours(new tire also), plenty of time to ride from Huntington Beach down the coast to San Diego and back home. Tire is now "broken in"

 
What's the chance of getting a PDF of the instructions?

Ya know KD, I'm beginning to think maybe everyone should just call Yamaha Customer Service and request a copy of the Tech Bulletin to cram down some of these "wanna-be" shops. :angry: How such a SIMPLE job can seem to be so dang hard is beyond me. We have one scheduled for next week, I'll bring in the camera and video it for YouTube. Maybe even get a few pics and put together a "How It's DUN 4 DUMMIES" for folks to print out.

Gawd, I can't even imagine what they do with a Roadstar Tranny recall. God help those poor folks. Makes me wonder if they brake with their left and shift with their right foot once they are done. <_<

I just had a little pow-wow with forum chief. Too many dealers not reading the instructions and we're going to bend things a bit IN THIS CASE. If somebody wants to PM me a link of where somebody might have a copy of the bulletin posted.....I'd make sure it gets posted for educational purposes. ;)

 
Having an 06 and a previous failure, I had a new switch installed in 07 at my expense. I ended up with two keys which really isn't a big deal but would have preferred only one. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the original switch and tumbler....which could now be installed in the recall switch....my mistake.
Has anyone that had a new switch already installed before the recall got theirs replaced yet with the recall? If you had two keys, do you have one or two now after the recall?

Sounds like I'll still have two keys when all is said and done, but curious.

Your mechanic can do this in minutes - not hours. Feel free to copy that post and take it to him. Be nice, offer to buy him an adult beverage if that's what it will take.

...I'd love to but another issue has come up - the right side saddle bag lock mechanism has sheared itself off and "jumped out" of the saddle bag - there's just a hole there now where the lock used to be. I've got the bag zipped tied shut and it's functionally useless.
That's why I was back in Danbury Powersports more than a week ago (after having been in there the Monday before that to tell *them* about the ignition recall). They have since (supposedly) ordered the ignition switch (which they supposedly had ordered the week before) and the lock mechanism. They have said that there would be a different ignition key (they showed me the switches they had been sent by Yamaha - they in fact had a different key already in the switch) and now that the saddle bag lock had to be replaced, possibly a different key for it too.

So I could conceivably end up with three separate keys for the bike.

Yeah - that ain't gonna happen.

When I fitted my spare lock into my Givi trunk I seem to remember the tumblers being the same as what you see below...

If your dealer is good they should have no problem with you "borrowing" a few individual tumblers from the recall completed switches to make the replacement saddlebag lock match your other locks.

If not "Them", I'm sure Brad may be able to help.

In fact, from what I can see all the way over here on the left coast, it seems that Brad's dealership should be your
first
choice for service instead of that other place.

LOL, thanks Brodie ............ I've been thinking of doing a traveling road show like on TV and have a tech ride with doing switches for folks. I already have laid hands on a few of those "NEW" lock cylinders just in case.

Hey Shawn, I'll save you some cylinder creamer for your cup of coffee complete with key-stirsticks just in case you need it. B)

I would look around for another dealer. Worse case scenario Yamaha Sportscenter is within a day's reach. The owner Tony O is a respected forum member. From what you say it will be worth the trip!

Tip O' the Beenie to several forum dwellers for copies of things. I believe this link is the most direct and best quality of M2009-002R Technical Bulletin - Factory Modification Campaign of the Main Switch.

B-B, the dealers have the service bulletin they're just not reading it! After FredW replied to my previous post in this thread with specific line #s to read I went back to my dealer's service mgr. He read the info but said he couldn't see how to get into the new ig switch without tearing it up. We settled on him calling Yamaha next week to ask their techs how to go about switching the old tumblers into the new switch. But he was apparently ignoring that part until I pushed a little. I have to say thanks again to this forum and the folks that help us all look out for ourselves a little better. I'll let y`all know how my situation turns out.

B-B, the dealers have the service bulletin they're just not reading it! After FredW replied to my previous post in this thread with specific line #s to read I went back to my dealer's service mgr. He read the info but said he couldn't see how to get into the new ig switch without tearing it up. We settled on him calling Yamaha next week to ask their techs how to go about switching the old tumblers into the new switch. But he was apparently ignoring that part until I pushed a little. I have to say thanks again to this forum and the folks that help us all look out for ourselves a little better. I'll let y`all know how my situation turns out.

Unless you have previously replaced your ignition switch at some time in the past and have 2 keys already when you drive in to have the recall done, there is no reason to mess with the tumblers. That is far more invasive than what the recall instructions tell them to do. They should be swapping the whole lock cylinder per the procedure (see link in Iggy's post 3 posts up). However, the info Brodie posted about mixing and matching tumblers is what you'd have to do to get back to one key in that case (drove in with 2 keys).

If you read the procedure it is a very simple to swap the lock cylinders. I just don't see what they don't get. All you need to do is drill out the "security screws" under the two rubber covers to disassemble the switch assy. Those guys must be complete idiots to not be able to follow such exact instructions.

Done on the 21st no issue's, well other than they forgot to call and tell me it was done. Saturday was a rare sunny nice day up here in great North wet!

Guess he didn't look at the new switch very closely. From the instructions, it is clear that the security screws are already in the new switch body, installed loosely, without the heads broken off. They send them that way intentionally so they can swap the guts. My guess is the heads are still not broken off because they never removed the rubber caps over the screws to look. Because they never followed the friggen directions.

I'm starting to feel better about the inclusion of a link to the actual bulletin every day. ;) It will be nice when dealers get up to speed.

After reading the tech bulletin myself Fred, it is painfully obvious I'm dealing with someone who's......let's see how can I say this and not trip my warn meter.......uh, [SIZE=24pt]STUPID!!! [/SIZE]It is also obvious that until I brought it to his attention he hadn't read past line 8 or 10 or so. I'll now be very curious to see what he says after talking to Yamaha techs tomorrow; my suspicion is that my dealer will have to buy another ignition switch out of their own pocket to make things right for me. Again, I'll let y`all know. And thanks Iggy for going to bat for us and finding a copy of the bulletin that I now hope everyone reads before they go in for the recall switch replacement.
