Some do, most don't. What they require is reliable position tracking. When pushed most would accept a new position every 30 minutes at the outside. This is probably not an issue East of the Mississippi, but get out west and you can ride a long time with no cell service.
My wife (she pays all the bills) doesn't seem to care what it costs, I have to have the SPOT, without interruption, when I'm out on my own...which is often.
I've toyed for some time about building a rally bike out of a Kawasaki KZ1000P Police bike.
I guess the LBJ Memorial is good example. One contender recognizes mutiple bonuses can be bagged from a single spot and has at least another couple of hours to play with that others don't. Masters and riders benefit from the same tools but it still comes down how you play the game. Great stuff.
From the looks of things, I'd say ANY BMW from ANY year. They're becoming more and more of a poor excuse for a motorcycle.
What a coincidence! I left the note on the guys bike in Clarksville, and later found out it was Drew Dill. Since then I've got his private Spot and I've been following and rooting for him on his blue CVO Road Glide. Now you found him at your hotel in Mitchell and left another note on the same bike. He's going to feel very appreciated.

I'm not so sure about "robust safety" of the SPOT units. My Spot II died after only 18 months of use. Worse thing was that I did not know it had died until I reached home after a further 4 days. All the lights seemed to work, but no signals were being "uploaded".
1600 miles in 27 hours....just a bit less than a BBG pace, but certainly a rider that's not going to have a lot of time collecting off-route bonuses along the way.
Doable yes but, last day...........going to be grueling.....hope they got some good rest!!!!!
