He's doomed. That was an unfortunate choice. there is no way out of that 100 miles or so. until later..
The traffic jams will all be going from Manhattan to Long Island, and from Manhattan to the Jersey Shore, and from Manhattan to the Poconos.

(there is a reason I moved from Staten Island to Montana. - and that rider is about to become very familiar with my decision making process).
Now he's on the LIE (Long Island Expressway for those not familiar with the area). No bueno!

...and with the masses taking a 4 day weekend it's going to be double-bad (no doubt already is)I spent a long 4th July wknd in Manhattan ..a great time to visit the city cuz everyone LEAVES, but all those leaving are not going to help Roger's cause) That's going to be a long spell of misery.

Looks like a few riders might be cutting it close...although I'm not sure which direction they're going.
If you click on any Spotwalla flag, it will indicate compass heading at the time of the update ("ENE" would be returning from the Keys for those riders)

That helps when you can't see the breadcrumbs, or keep track of every little update.

The rider who looks to be headed to NYC on Friday before a summer holiday weekend could be in for a mess. If they go in to Manhattan as the other riders did in stage one they will be leaving about 4pm. Ouch!
Exactly what I was thinking. Patience and Fortitude (the lions in front of the library) or something else, must be a really big bonus to bring the rider into Manhattan!

After that, google maps estimates almost 24 hours to get back to CP2. Adding in the rest time, that's not leaving much time for anything else.
Bless his soul. Thinking it's probably not the lions though as he's way down in Chinatown. The library is up on 42nd.

Edit: Strike that. Now in Brooklyn? He's just getting in deeper. Hopefully he can get back out in time.
I wonder if that's Rob Nye headed home? Maybe his tracker wasn't removed from the page?

Ah, yes! Great tip!

Dead fish in Centerport....he'll never make it back to the checkpoint in time if he tries to get to Centerport and back now.

Someone mentioned it might be the rider who dropped out going home? Edited: Hello Kitty says this is not the case. Now I'm really wondering what will happen....

Can you split lanes in NY?
The second time I split lanes was in NYC coming over the GWB. No, you are NOT permitted to legally, but it was widely accepted. I just followed in behind a guy with no gear on a "chopper" and I could not believe how courteous the drivers were to us! I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and courtesy is definitely NOT something I grew up with on the roads! So, can you, no. do people, yes. With great success! The IBA does not condone violating local law, mind you.

Rob is from New England. No reason to be in Chinatown or Brooklyn on his way there.

A couple of riders asked me to call them throughout the rally just to break the monotony of chugging down interstate miles. Spoke to two of them yesterday. Summary of some of their interesting comments:

  • This rally is hard because there is no clear way to create a string without breaking it by leaving out other high point bonuses
  • All the bonuses are available throughout the rally, but even their point values change with each leg
  • I had a plan, but then seeing a possible string quickly breaks the plan and I'm back to square one
  • Started leg 2 and its going well, but I've decided to can that plan and spend the night re-routing....this sucks
  • I've decided to retire after this rally. (He is an experienced rally rider and rallymaster)
  • Leg 3 looks like itll be a damn free for all
  • I'll blame it all on the gps
  • I'll go to a food market and buy meat, poultry, fish and then head to toys r us to buy dinosaurs....slam all that crap at the scoring table

My hats off to Jeff Earls. If this sets the stage for future rallies, I'll make sure to only offer my services as a volunteer

On another note, I'll be headed down to south padre for the holiday weekend in an hour or so. Hoping to see any riders on the northbound lane so that my wife can snap a pic!

That fish would most likely be inside the museum. Doesn't seem to fit with the other bonii.

There's the Egret in Farmingville and, what could be a sucker bonus, the Stargazer sculpture in Manorville.

Agreed, BigOgre.... And those locations would be even tougher.

Thanks for sharing the commentary from the riders, Ndv21!

Chuckle, chuckle.

Ya, but has anyone told rob that??
Roger continues to head east, he has plenty of time to get back to the CP if he takes a straight path, but not many riders are taking straight paths. You'd also assume he needs to get some sleep, wonder if has earned rest bonus on this leg.

wonder if he knows many eyes are on him? I guess his mom was right when she said he was unique.

Oh, and the key west bonus is the big conch statue at the entrance of Key West High School. An individuals spot page revealed that.

With all the slicing and dicing of relevant (and irrelevant) stats, is there any information on how many riders are on the darkside?

I do not know the Rest Bonus window, but to score the bonus and then during the "Rush" hour take a rest bonus and ride out during the

night seems like a possible solution.

Use to be called the Worlds longest parking lot when I lived down there 40 years ago.

Spot signal time stamp hasn't updated for that one in a while. When it comes back it'll be easy to pick him out
