Some thoughts...

After Leg1 I kind of thought Jim O had this and that 2nd place was the prize.

NOW. I am thinking its wide open. Jim was not just saving it up for leg 3 (His miles show big effort) his efficiency dropped. Hmmm

And how about those miles that Wendy is pounding out!

Always impressed with P Tong and Erik, great riders with thinking minds. Then Ken M has positioned himself nicely.

Should be a great leg 3

I am in Illinois on my way up for the banquet now.

Was anybody on the scene last night or this morning who can give us an idea of how the riders seemed in general....energy level, spirit level, etc?
And will the updated standings after leg 2 be posted? : )

So curious...

I was there yesterday. Handed out a few cigars. Helped a few riders as well as ran comms (info running) between Allen (Dash) Dyle and the Rally Mom.

Got Dash set up so he could park his toolbox in a spot nearer the riders who might need help.

One FJR rider came in with a rear tire that was very low. It had a nail and he didn't know it until someone pointed it out. Several hours later it remained unrepaired so I can only assume that the rider was getting cleaned up and scored.

The Liles arrived in good spirits and with their BMW still operational.

The sidecar family were also in good spirits.

RJ, it's nice when hope springs eternal for Gen3.

When math doesn't work, hope is all that's left. Gen3 so dissapointing in rally results compared to it's more nimble and faster older siblings. Sad to witness. Hope on you crazy diamonds.

This discussion has been going on for as long as I can remember. After some attitude adjustments in 2003, I have joined the "it's the rider and not the bike" camp.

Efficiency drop you mention (Owen) is really interesting when compared to what Lipps did. If you factor miles or efficiency in relation of the delta in their total points it really speaks highly to Erik's 2nd leg. BTW they did a very similar leg2 route, although Jim passed on the stacking-up on a diesel slick. I hope E's wrist continues to improve.
All riders have a long leg3, it's underway, I'm excited and nervous for most all of them. They've got a long ways to go, it'll be fun to cheer from the bleachers.

ya, because Yamaha has been making the bike fatter and slower each year forever. What is finally changing is the riders, you're right it is the rider ...and top riders are avoiding the gen3 like the plague. Too bad, for a long time with the earlier FJRs top riders would choose it above the other options, not the case anymore.

This talk of the Gen 3 not being suitable has me wondering - someone, somewhere, must have compiled a list of the various bikes that have run the IBR, and the failure modes.

.. might be a fun project for Timmer and/or MNFJR05

Only riders are privy to the bonuses. They got the whole list at the beginning and they have not been shared publicly....and won't at least until the rally is over.

That said, I would look to the NE of the US (or Canada) as being in play for some of the most ambitious riders. That clump headed NE ain't by chance.

How about adding points per mile? I used to love that stat in the earlier rallies and haven't seen it yet this year.
