You can hang back half a mile or stay about three feet from the guy ahead of you so the dust doesn't have a chance to rise to face level. And you'll look cool in one of these.
So is that all you are recommending is some kind of bandana thing?
Yeah a bandana or even a painters dust mask will work or you can spend gobs of money on something more hi tech that won't work much better. Personally I like to stay out front, nothing works better

I'm in. Oh wait. No I'm not. I don't have a dual sport. :( Anyone got an extra one sitting around? A BMW R1200GS would be nice.... :) JB
Do you want a dual sport or a full sized sport touring bike with a little extra ground clearance? I'll be bringing an extra bike, you can represent Team Green. Yes it's the green one in the middle. It isn't plated (thanks Kalifornia) but it has a headlight.

I guess I could drive the pickup and bring my mountain bike and a rope..... :dribble: Just for you, Hans... :yahoo:

Thanks for the suggestion. Duly noted (and I think I have a package of them hanging in the garage above the lawnmower). I guess that means I'll have to trim my beard a little closer.

Hi, Evil. Is that a, you know, real offer? I'd love to go on this ride. I've got all the camping equipment I need, just no motorcycle. But where / how do you pack your gear? Just lash everything down (sleeping bag, food, chaise lounge, TV set....)?

Uberkul is bringing his 4wd pickup. If the EvilHenchman offer works out, perhaps you could meet either of them to "haul" your gear to the campsite.

Hmmmm, Bluestreek is a bit late getting in on this.....now he has to find his own. Mebbe I shuud git a CycleTrader soes I kin hep thuh serch?!?! :search: :pardon:

JB you can consider that a solid offer and now I'm 100% comit commite committed to going on this one. As for camping, I have a 29' motorhome I plan on bringing unless the road is too bad. I used to camp at Carr lake but I haven't been up that road for years. I'll be doing some advance recon and worst case is I'll bring my 4WD truck with a shell and camper kit. My 3 rail bike trailer will handle some surprising 4 wheeling.

I guess I need some clarification on how this works. I was imagining parking all 4-wheeled vehicles at the trailhead and biking in with our gear. But it's sounding more like a caravan of miscellaneous vehicles, including trailered bikes. Do we trailer the bikes in and then ride around where we stop for the night?

Good question! It sounds as if EvilHenchman is driving in with the motorhome. I'm thinking some of us more local folks are riding in, all packed, bungeed and lashed.

You can do as you please. There are campsites up there for trailers and RV's. I am riding my bike from my house to the location :)

My initial plan is to go up Friday the 14th, camp at Meadow Lake, and jam out to the trailhead in the morning. I'll know more when I get up there and look around in the next couple of weeks but I'll be real surprised if you couldn't drive a car to Meadow lake. I'm open to other suggestions as long as they don't involve lashing a bunch of gear on a dirt bike and sleeping on the ground... I'm old and spoiled. Oh and I won't mind staging other peoples gear at the campsite.

Some of the cross drainage bumps are pretty large, but for the most part the road is very passable. There is one section of ruts that are pretty deep...chosing your path carefully should get you through. I think a regular car would bottom out a few times here and there...some of the bumps may prove impassable for a regular car IMO. I've drive my Lexus sedan up to Lake Bowman though.

I'll probably head up there on the 14th, too (assuming I get that day off work at our meeting in 2 hours). I need to do a reconoitering run up there first to consider access, obstacles and distances (anyone up for a DS ride this weekend, maybe Sunday??).

My incubating plan is to go up on the 14th on my KLR, while Judy drives her 2wd truck with tent and other camping essentials. I'll probably set up camp, and send her off to fish or hike (probably her favorite activity and area). Then kick back with adult beverages and dinner. Next morning, it sounds like I'll probably be eating the henchman's dust on the ride out to the meeting place.

Question: if Hans shows up Saturday, how do we get him out to the henchman's bike trailer? Is it proper form to drag a philosopher behind the bikes, or does he ride bitch? If he has any camping gear with him, I'm thinking that dragging may be the only way to get him and it out there. Or, I can drag his gear while he rides bitch with henchman?

I might take you up on that ESB. I have myself at the Moto GP this Sunday on my schedule but since that's NOT going to happen I owe it to myself for some alternate fun. Father-in-Law gets here tomorrow so I'll be looking for a break by then anyway. Meet at OV's meeting spot around 8:00 am? Might want to get an early start with the heat/dust.

Christy and I are bringing Sherri up in the truck Sat last I heard. I plan on off-loading my bike at OV's meeting spot and ride out from there. JB can throw his stuff in and ride out with the girls if he wants. JB, I disavow anything that may happen to you after we part company. :dribble:

Orangevale, do you know if this is a green sticker area? Christy was thinking she might want to bring up her quad and ride along. If not I suppose she will stay at camp perfecting her vodka martini recipe.

I talked to the rangers in Sierraville and they said it's not unusual to see trailers and RV's at Meadow Lake but you have come in from Hwy 89. Turn off at Rd 7 towards Jackson Meadows to Meadow Lake Rd (#86) at the Weber Lake turn off. That's where the pavement ends. Rd 86 turns/merges into Rd 843 near the lake.

I'm picking up two of my kids at the Reno airport on Friday and if all goes well my son and I will be checking out that route on Sunday so we'll keep our eyes peeled for a couple-o- hooligans on a Husaberg and a KLR. :)

Oh yeah! I forgot about the back way. I haven't been that way yet :)

Good find Evil! Hmm...with a name like Evil, should we be expecting to see some kind of remarkable jump while we are there? How many cars are coming? :clapping:

I believe that's why he's bringing the motor home -- same as jumping busses, but if you jump it the long way, you don't have to get many cars in there.

Brad -- Sunday sounds good. I guess I need to get out of here around 7 am.

Anyone else for this Sunday's reconnoitering? Andrew?

Ohhh Steeeee-eeeeve! You gonna have a KLR by Sunday?

No jumps from me, I keep things pretty well planted these days. That's not to say I don't enjoy occasional WOT and hill climbing hooliganism though. Hopefully my last bout with broken ribs will be my last bout with broken ribs.
