OK Don since youve done this trip before, Hows the jetting issue handled?

I plan to bring a 172,170 and a 165 main jet, did you guys stop and change out jets along the way or what?

Its not a big deal to change jets on the KTM, its just you gotta remove so much crap just to get to it. I ride at just above sea level 300' - 2500' or so, and as finicky as this 530EXC is there, I cant imagine what kind of problems I may have at 10,000+ feet

Wowser fjrrider, you have me stumped on this question. I will ask Brian "El Jefe" Boles if he is bringing along extra jets for his 530EXC. I have been to Batopilas and Urique from Creel; both on two separate trips aboard my fuel injected 1996 BMW R1100GS, with no problems whatsoever due to the FI. I have ridden from Creel to Batopilas on my carbureted 2006 Kawasaki KLR 650, with no problems whatsoever. But I fully realize that the KTM 530EXC is a true high performance machine and probably is a whole lot more finicky than a pedestrian KLR! Sorry about that comment, Shiny!

Remember, I haven't been any farther west than Batopilas and Urique; and coming from the Sea of Cortez going eastward, I've only been 25 kilometers east of Alamos and El Fuerte: So, the vast territory between those four points is No Man's Land to Papa Chuy, Uncharted Territory! I'll copy and paste this post to Skip Mascorro of Moto Discovery and see what our guide says! Una Pregunta!

In the early 1980's I had a hardon for the GS80. Wish I had the cash.

 
There were no high strung thoroughbreds in our group 2 KLR 650s, 1 KLR 250, an XT 350, a dr350 and a DRZ400. The guy with the DRZ felt he had to mess with his carb when we where in Creel. He wound up breaking a small plastic piece some where deep inside. Guess how well the MC dealers are stocked in Mexico :huh: it would be faster to have it shipped from the states and that takes a long time. We were able to fashion a replacement out of some safety wire. The moral of the story, if it aint broke don't fix it.

If you bike is running a little bad at 8,000 feet don't worry about, you'll be down the other side by the afternoon and it'll be running great again. Our elevation varied from 1700 ft to 8700 ft mostly in the 3000 to 6000 ft range.

That one would have hurt if you didn't know what I plan to do to my KLR, Beemerdons.

Besides, sometimes it isn't the ride, but the rider that matters!

On our trip, does anyone know what the longest strech will be between fill ups? Or will it even matter wince we have the luggage truck following us with some gas?

My concern is that when I went riding in the GA mountains Sunday I only got about 135 miles before the low fuel light came on. Granted, I was running her hard off road, but I typically get around 155 ish mi before it comes on.

Also for you AZ folks; Even if it's not needed for the trip, should I still consider a means of carrying some extra fuel with me when I venture out into the AZ wilderness for the week after the CC trip?

Those of us at www.fjrforum.com and www.azbeemers.org/forum are really looking forward to our Copper Canyon Expedition six months from now. We can hardly wait for CC!

Two questions have come up that we hope tu Tres Amigos can help us with: 1) fjrrider of Texarkana, Texas has a KTM 530EXC that is finicky regarding carb jetting: Should he bring along extra jets for this trip to deal with the elevation changes? In his post above, he describes the jets that he will be taking along with him. 2) CHRIS_D of Atlanta, Georgia was wanting to know the maximum distance between fuel stops on our CC Trek. At a hard running condition, his KTM Adventure is only getting a range of 135 miles.

Skip, I will see you at the BMW MOA International Rally in Redmond, Oregon in July. Son Seth (13) and Papa Chuy (61) will be at https://www.sherpamayberry.com camp site on the DesChutes County Fairgrounds. We will be aboard our silver BMW R1150RT, flag decals of Mexico, USA, Canada and Arizona are on the saddle bags and an AZ M/C plate.

I'm not sure Chris, but I think the longest section is around 165 miles if memory serves. Instead of carrying fuel, bring a siphon and ride with a 6+ gallon pig like my KLR on a long stretch. I am set up to run with an extra 1 liter of fuel as well if I want to. I could bring one of my MSR bottles along and you could borrow it for the long stretches if you wish. You'd have to ride like an old man for that long section though!

EDIT: I just read Beemerdons email/post above. I guess a definative answer is preferable, so I'll wait like the rest of you for an informed answer.

Well Shiny, it's now 2010 and I still have a raging blue-veined, diamond cutter hardon for the GS80. I just posted my illegitimate ******* son SkooterG (you being mi "otra" illegitimate Hijo *******o) to see if he wants to go halfsies with his Papa Chuy. Now Skooty is "Con Trabajo", maybe he can pony up half of the purchase and insurance on this!

Geoff, Thank you for this link, I have wanted an original BMW R80GS for so damn long now! I wish this had been available a month ago, as I just bought another rental property and spent all of my liquid and easily convertible cash! Crapola!

SkooterG: Now you're "Con Trabajo", do you have any interest in going halves on the purchase of this cherry and pristine BMW R80GS. We'd go 50-50 on all costs of this bike and we would store it in your garage in Maricopa, so you would get the most riding time on it. When I get my $6,500 property purchase rebate on April 15, 2011, I would buy you out of this machine. Unless you also want it at that time and we would flip a coin for its ownership! Interested, Amigo?

OK that helps, I can jet for that mid-range then deal with the rest. As long as were not running extended time at or above 10,000 ft it should be OK.

I'm hoping my Colorado ride in August will help sort out some jetting issues as well. I guess one day all motorcycles will have FI and jetting wont be an issue!

Shiny, I appreciate your offer to loan the MSR bottle. I have been considering an Aux tank that goes where my second exhaust siliencer used to be. This would give me an extra 2 gallons. The reason I haven't done this sooner is bacause of weight.

I've been giving it a lot of thought. The tractor tubes I have (one used as a tool tube) allow one MSR bottle to fit exactly. I want to take some longer trips into the Rogue and Umpqua Forests and dry camp at some point my schedule allows.

If I can set it up the way TurboDave set his up, I can have one bottle on each side of the back rack. Tnat would give me almost 7 gallons of range. The nice part about this is I can use the space for more incidentals (spare tube for instance) when I don't need the extra fuel. Weight goes up of course, but if I was that concerned I wouldn't be riding a KLR650. So I hope your plans work out, but there is a chance I could have two MSR bottles available for you on the longest trail days if needed, then just hand them back to me at the end of the day and call it even. Depending on what Skip tells you, that might give you enough range on longer days, while minimizing weight for you on shorter ones.

Also, I have lost 63 pounds, which makes up for the weight of a few farkles.

Great job on the weight loss. I too am trying to loose a few pounds.

Have lost about 30 lbs. so far. Am also working on my upper

body strength. With my bad back the KLR was just to heavy in

the real rough terrain. Hope to be lighter and in better shape

come Nov.

Most excellent Joe! That will help your back out as well. I'm working out as often as life allows -- two or three times a week, trying to build stamina and upper body strength a bit too. Let us see pics of your DRZ when you have a chance. I'd like to see it.
