WeekendRider, it's a 40,000 mile 06, and it's being rebuilt, so all the farkles stay in place!
Looks like total damage is $7,679.54
Don, have you seen the parts list and labor breakdown for the estimate? I'm trying to get my head around how a bike could take 7.6k in head on damage and still be ridable. Wow.

Wow! '06 with 40k miles and still repairable at $7.7k in damage?! I would definitley doublecheck that list for sanity.....had my '04 Mazda 3 hit a dog...initial estimate was ~$4k but kept growing. The insurance company let them proceed with work and they kept finding more wrong with it as they worked on it...final bill was $10k and the cars value was ~$14k They werent updating the insurance company with all the details as they kept fixing it. Me thinks they got into it and discovered they had really overlooked some stuff and were doing their damndest to stay below the 70% threshold, b/c they kept mentioning that percentage and when I got it back curiously enough there were several items still not repaired that had they done so, would have put it well over 70% threshold. Insurance company was pissed and ended up totalling it in the end.

Good to hear you made it through that one. I've hit two deer and ridden away - both with the FJR. It's a solid bike!

I got a good laugh at the "deer in the headlights." Isn't that how they tend to wind up?

Thanks for sharing!

 Walked away
You are one skillful and lucky SOB. My big fear riding these days-even more than cell phoned seniors.. It's really nice to read about this and not have to say 'get well and heal soon'

I do have the breakdown. 3 pages worth IIRC. Will scan, post and link tonight. It was pretty late when I got home last night so I only breifly looked at the list but did see 'inner tubes'... (complete with imported Japanese air!) Yes, I know these are fork sliders...

I may end asking if I can buy enough parts from Umotors for cheap to cover the 500 deductible then let the shop have the rest. Sure would be nice if I didn't have to cough up the 500 bones.
Buy the parts from Umotors. Give me a call when they get in. Been a while since I attended a Tupperware party! ;)
I like the concept of "the Tupperware Party", how does it work? This could be a "serious effort" for some who;

a. are looking to replace a scratched/bent piece with a better one, from someone else's stash of re-claimed insurance parts like Don's

b. an opportunity for those customizers to buy up twisted parts in order to cut them up and repair them with the good ol' plastic welder

c. a way to create a multi-toned bike by say (?), swapping galaxy blue (05) parts with cerulean silver (04), as an example. Parts like fenders, gas tanks etc. can be swapped (and swapped back later), if they are from the similar model/year bikes.

d. allow the owner of a re-built bike to re-claim deductable from remaining parts with $$$ gained from selling re-claimed parts, before the rest are SOLD on Ebay

Just a thought... When is it? Where is it?

**** adds up quickly for repair damage. Both of my, ummm...."oopsies" had repair estimates above $5000. And in both cases, bike was still very ridable, being ridden more than a thousand miles after the crash to get it home.

I don't see that happening. That's how the shop makes a good portion of their money - on the mark-up of parts.

Why don't you repair the whole thing yourself?

That's what I did on my 2nd crash. Had a dealer do an estimate, then brought it home, ordered stuff from U Motors and fixed it myself. Between savings on labor, discounted parts from U Motors, and not replacing a few parts with just some minor rash, I saved a bundle. Much more than my $1000 deductible.

The only problem is finding more stuff as you go. You will need to bring the insurance adjuster out to inspect any new damage in excess of the estimate you find.

Also, don't take the estimate at face value. After my last crash, the estimate included replacing both forks. Well, I sent them out to a suspension shop and had him test them. They were both straight!!! So, after new seals, all was good with my old forks and that was a huge savings.

Glad your ok DC... Wish I was closer , be glad to give you a hand fixing it... Like Skooter said... like money in the bank... Smitty

I too wish you lived closer Smitty! I could buy you diet sodas, keep you fed, take bitchen rides, and have my bike worked on too  .

I could *probably* muddle my way through this repair but I simply don't have the time and need the bike on the road asap; it's my 80 per day commutter.

BTW, this video just about describes the look of a deer strike..

This one's a little more applicable, and scary. Just hang up the keys now.... Video

Well Don, I guess it pays to read this section of the board. Or to view new posts. I just missed it I guess. Glad your doing ok and the bike looks like toast from the pic. Its a miracle your ok and hope everything works out for ya to ride an 08. I really can't believe all the wrecks on here. It does make me sick. Take care bro. and be safe. Prayers, Del. <><

Wow, I think that we should form some sort of a deer strike club. (See A Miracle post on Oct 3rd) Your strike was almost a clone of mine except I knocked the thilng 100 feet down the road. You could have charged a carrying fee.........Just ordered 1300.00 worth of plastic and such from Ron Ayres.......Had the forks straigntened and am almost on the road again in a week or so.........Good Luck with your FJR repair....

Holy ****,just saw this Don.

You must immediately resign as Pres of the candyassassociation cause after going through that rat you'll have to start a new club.

You'll now be Pres of the I **** in my pants club. You are no longer considered a candyass.

Wow. That's got to be within a single deer turdicle of a total loss on the bike. I heard they like to total a bike if the estimate is 70% or more of the value of the bike. I would think that total is very, very close. Turdicle close.

Two weeks later and the Geico insurance adjuster still has to submit paper to the dealer.

I called him last week, he promised 'today, tomorrow at the latest'; said he's having to cover two routes, too much area, windshield time is high, and no paper gets processed while driving. He seems like a nice guy. But.. I need my daily commuter bike back. I can't afford the fuel to drive my truck every day. Yes, I do live on a tight budget.

Called today, his phone was 'out of area', called again, left vmail. Sigh. If they would just total it I could understand the wait for an 08.

Looks like I'm going to press forward and get a 1960 BMW R60/2 back on the road..
