Day 5
Today was a big day for us. We got to go all out with our inner tourists and see a lot of the things that everyone says you just have to see when you head out west. Because reports were that the Sturgis wing-ding was winding down we decided to go ahead and do all the big western South Dakota attractions. This may be true, but there were still plenty of them around to be contended with.
Was sunny when we set out...
But before we got down to the interstate we had already started to descend into some fog
Still managed to see these guys:
And the fog got even thicker before we got into the Badlands. That, and the lack of anyone else being around so early in the day, made some interesting photos
We stopped and walked around at one little area, and happened upon a small herd of mule deer. Looked to be at least 3 Does and their fawns. May have also been a buck in the group, but they were wandering around pretty widely
Once we were back on the road the fog was starting to lift and we could see the geology a bit better from the road
Buzzed up 44 through Scenic to Rapid City, and the rest of the fog burned off
From Rapid City we turned south again to get down into the Black Hills. Here's all the stuff we saw there:
Stopped and looked at the open pit gold mine in Lead, SD
The only down side to touring the black hills was all the big rolling roadblocks the pirates were putting on. The later in the day the worse it got. When we finally came around to Spearfish I was glad to jump on the interstate again to get away from the hoards.
We buzzed west on I90 into Wyoming, then up to take in the Devil's Tower. Of course there were pirates mingling around there too... but at least there were fewer of them.
And now for the money shot:
After having an Ice Cream at the Devils Tower Store, we back tracked to our hotel for the night in the bustling town of Hulett, at The Best Western Devil's Tower Inn. It's actually quite a nice place, albeit a bit pricey for us frugal Yankee types at $129 a night. But apparently with the tourist season in full swing, that is a bargain at this time of year.
Dining options were pretty slim here in Hulett. It was either eat at this place or the deli next door.
So we opted for the Ponderosa Cafe! I started out with one of these relatively local brews.
But sadly, it was pretty bad. I did not even order a second one.
Josie and I split a Chicken Caesar salad and a chicken breast sandwich. Both were good enough to do the job, but nothing to write home about. But I suppose that when you are in Hulett, this is as good as it gets.
Looking forward to tomorrow, when we should be hitting some pretty fun roads. Not that the ones in the Black Hills weren't fun. They were, whenever we could get around the roadblocks. Hopefully the Sturgeons will all be on their way home by tomorrow.
