I'm really enjoying reading this ride report. In fact, at the end of the day, I can't wait to read what happens next!

Keep it coming!!

This one is for captain Jack (yes there is a Gay Lord, almost everywhere!)

OH MY GAWD!!! A Doctor Who/Torchwood reference! Fred, you're my hero! You know the "new" Doctor premieres on BBC America two weeks from this Saturday night?

Heading out for some chow in a while, so I may check back in later with some pR0n. It's a chain within walking distance, but I hear this place has decent p-i-e.
You KNOW Niehart's attention just perked up, don'tcha?

Dat's why I'm here!! Just gave me inspiration for breakfast later today...

Although I'll substitute 3 over-easy eggs, some grits, hot coffee and some wheat toast for the dinner roll and mashed 'taters. Perfect to go with that lovely pounded beef and fried flour and milk. I'll be good for the rest of the weekend, waiting on your Saturday and Sunday reports!

Oh, Niehart can't stand it...he's headed your way right now for a 2am snack!

Mmmm. That berry pie was actually quite good. Flakey, light crust and tart filling!

Would have really been better with a curl of vanilla ice cream, but I was too stuffed from dinner.

I know, that was my fault. One should always leave room for pie.

This is killing me, I should stop reading this but I can't.

I can't even go for a ride on this beautiful weekend. All my bikes are in Maine and I

am stuck in Lynnfield trying to empty the house of unwanted furniture.

We canceled CFR due to the pending house sale, which turned out to be a good thing since the guy who got me into trail riding in the early 70s passed away yesterday.

Makes me think I need an S-10 to go to the Yukon , the NW territories, and Alaska next year. DREAM ON

Jack

You buy an S-10 and ride to Alaska and I'll buy one and join you.

There is (or was) a little place up the road from Crazyhorse that sell Helicopter rides around Crazyhorse. Pretty cool if your budget allows for it.

Great RR, look forward to my daily dose

Fred now that you are in Bison country, I feel obligated to remind you

that your internal system does not function properly on bison burgers.

This is a public service notice for TMJ.

Day 5

Today was a big day for us. We got to go all out with our inner tourists and see a lot of the things that everyone says you just have to see when you head out west. Because reports were that the Sturgis wing-ding was winding down we decided to go ahead and do all the big western South Dakota attractions. This may be true, but there were still plenty of them around to be contended with.

Was sunny when we set out...

But before we got down to the interstate we had already started to descend into some fog

IMG_2569.jpg

Still managed to see these guys:

And the fog got even thicker before we got into the Badlands. That, and the lack of anyone else being around so early in the day, made some interesting photos

We stopped and walked around at one little area, and happened upon a small herd of mule deer. Looked to be at least 3 Does and their fawns. May have also been a buck in the group, but they were wandering around pretty widely

Once we were back on the road the fog was starting to lift and we could see the geology a bit better from the road

IMG_2608.jpg

IMG_2609.jpg

Buzzed up 44 through Scenic to Rapid City, and the rest of the fog burned off

IMG_2626.jpg

From Rapid City we turned south again to get down into the Black Hills. Here's all the stuff we saw there:

Stopped and looked at the open pit gold mine in Lead, SD

IMG_2739.jpg

The only down side to touring the black hills was all the big rolling roadblocks the pirates were putting on. The later in the day the worse it got. When we finally came around to Spearfish I was glad to jump on the interstate again to get away from the hoards.

We buzzed west on I90 into Wyoming, then up to take in the Devil's Tower. Of course there were pirates mingling around there too... but at least there were fewer of them.

And now for the money shot:

IMG_2767.jpg

After having an Ice Cream at the Devils Tower Store, we back tracked to our hotel for the night in the bustling town of Hulett, at The Best Western Devil's Tower Inn. It's actually quite a nice place, albeit a bit pricey for us frugal Yankee types at $129 a night. But apparently with the tourist season in full swing, that is a bargain at this time of year.

Dining options were pretty slim here in Hulett. It was either eat at this place or the deli next door.

So we opted for the Ponderosa Cafe! I started out with one of these relatively local brews.

But sadly, it was pretty bad. I did not even order a second one.

Josie and I split a Chicken Caesar salad and a chicken breast sandwich. Both were good enough to do the job, but nothing to write home about. But I suppose that when you are in Hulett, this is as good as it gets.

Looking forward to tomorrow, when we should be hitting some pretty fun roads. Not that the ones in the Black Hills weren't fun. They were, whenever we could get around the roadblocks. Hopefully the Sturgeons will all be on their way home by tomorrow. ;)

It looks like you got to take a spin on the Needles Hwy, good call and hopefully you got a pic or two of the 4 heads framed by one of the tunnels.

Yes, we ran the needles highway both ways. But I did not remember to stop to take the fancy photo.

Now that you mention it, I do remember someone else talking about doing that before.

Fred, be glad you are in Hulett tonight instead of on Wednesday, known officially as "No Panties Wednesday" when some 200,000 pirates and their significant others pack the town of Hulett.

Could be Wyoming's biggest annual traffic jam.
