There are some really nice components that buyers of this system could add. THIS LINK has insulated and non-insulated drinking tubes, quick connectors and bite valves. This are the same components used on Geigerrig units and they are slick., Some components are not all that cheap, but you can build a premium system without tearing apart an existing hydration unit.

These quick-connects are leak-proof and let you quickly disconnect tubing for refills.

Now I just need to find a good way to connect a magnet to the end piece of the tube. I had noticed this on someone else's bike at one of the rally's. Near their bite-valve they had attached a neoprene (or some other material) covered magnet, so when they were done with it they just stuck it back down on their tank, where it stayed until they needed it again. Pretty nice way to keep it out of the way, but available for easy access.

I like the magnet idea. I have something in mind that may work well. In the meantime, here's a photo of the prototype strap system. The jug won't fall out until you release the buckle. I hope to have the clamp system built soon after some parts arrive...

That's really nice. I like it a lot. I like the look of this better than the clamp, but I'll be sending you money for whichever one you decide on...If you only pick one.

I really like this as well. I'm not so sure I'd buy the other one if you only made one though.

Nice! :) I would prefer to have this strap design but will get the clamp design if that is the only one produced.

+1

Where do I send the money?

You can buy ring shaped magnets here like this one, that you might be able to slide the tube through. These magnets can be fragile, so wrapping them in some sort of tape or coating them in "plasti-dip" would be recommended. The quick disconnects are also a great idea, but can be difficult to keep clean due to all of the little nooks and crannies in the liquid flow path. My experience has been that it's hard to keep things from growing on the interior surfaces without hitting them with bleach every once in a while.

The original hydration system came with a magnetic bite valve & a small plastic piece with metal to connect somewhere. I'm guessing it was meant for your tank bag. I'm one of those that just puts the magnetic bite valve right on my tank. & btw, they make magnetic bite valves. You don't need to find a way to secure the magnet to the valve.

Edited to add: The one that I have is identical to this one.

i use variations of these badge reels. work great. no scratching of the tank. let go and it retracts without any distractions.

can be found at most any office supply and cheap, too.

I finally got the parts to make some more systems. Here are a couple of images of the clamp style. I plan to powdercoat them in satin black or silver. The clamp works well and is adjustable for tightness. It can also be reversed for installation on the other side.

Since I've never had anything like that I have to ask.....

Is attaching it to the foot peg with only two screws/bolts really strong enough to support the weight? And is the weight of the jug enough to stop the foot peg from trying to fold up when you hit a bump?

Probably silly questions but I had to ask.

Jon...

I suspect the answer to both questions is Yes.

Reasons:

Q1: A typical passenger leg with gear weighs more than an filled jug.

Q2: Even if it moves a bit it's going no where. If you are riding an FJR in places that bumpy it is time for some sort of on/off road machine. I happen to have a slightly used Vstrom for sale...... only 80k miles.

My question is I am in. When can I get one? Hoping soon for my big trips begin next month.

Hello all - I plan to start a new thread in the Group Buys area shortly (a day or 2) after I determine what the final price will be. I will be in touch with those riders that have already expressed interest (including you, Fontanaman). ;)

Fontanaman,

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the V-Strom, I've had three of them. Traded the last one for my FJR :)

Garauld,

You make some really nice stuff. Once I get my suspension sorted out don't be surprised if I place a few orders.

THAT is sweet looking. I like tha fact that the strap clamp won't blow around in the wind if the jug is removed as opposed to the nylon straps.

Nice job.

I really like the way the mount with the clamp turned out. It's very slick. I'll be watching for the group buy info. Thanks for all the hard work you're putting in on this. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

I suggest that the clamp folds to the rear to lcck, to reduce accidental opening. It should be possible to reverse the clamp for left or right side mounting. The clamp design is better than the strap because it has the advantage of making it possible to fill the jug without detaching it.
