Well, thanks for nothing. It doesn't matter why, what's so hard about just answering my question as stated?
You threw it out there and you got some honest opinions, accept them or reject them. Once you post something it is out of your control and there is no chance of knowing where it will go. Sometimes a mod will delete an off topic comment or even shutdown a thread, but often a thread will become pretty odd. Just be happy that no one called you a name; just about everyone else on this forum has been called something akin to "peckerhead". The important thing now is what are you going to do. You can pout and leave the forum; if you do that then you and your post will be soon forgotten. Or, you can join in the fracas, give as good as you get and ultimately learn a great deal and make some good friends... including some who may have mocked your first question. Hope you decide to hang around.

Oh, and you'll find Ignacio particularly helpful... in cold and brutal sort of way.

Good answer, peckerdactyl! :p

All in an effort to live up to the very important #6 on the rules that has been in place since the forum start. ;)

6. Those who are easily offended should proceed with caution. Posts in this forum may or may not contain adult language/themes. No whiney-gash crying about them allowed. Deal with it.

The Gen 3 cat is different from the 1 and 2. I DID search firstin this forum and a google search) but hey were inconclusive, so, a simple question, does anybody have any experience with a GEN3 cat removal?

NOW you're contributing....I think?!?

How is the Gen III cat different from the Gen I? Gen IIs don't count, cause they were crap motorcycles, with a cat in the crossover chamber AND cats in (allegedly) each of the mufflers.

The Gen I cat is in the crossover chamber, at the end of the 4 header pipes, just before the 2 muffler mid-pipes. If the Gen III cat is in a different location, where the hell is it? In the airbox? The fairing storage compartment? Under the seat?

Inquiring minds want to know.....

That's good to know you did search...that really would have been a helpful note to add to your original post and probably engendered more support to begin with. ;)

So, then I'd suggest the answer is a qualified "No." and that we all look forward to you being the resident expert with your FZ1 experience, document your cat removal, and post up your experiences for the next person that asks. This place loves pictures!

I would also note is that I don't remember anybody removing specifically from the Gen 3. And the qualification is that the Gen 3 cats are probably like the Gen 1 as they returned to the same number of cats after increasing in Gen 2.

Now that this is in NEPRT (and it may be eligible for a reprieve) I would expect that someone would have let loose with at least one PECKERHEAD!!!!!

Same design, yet different part #s, but the cats are in the chamber between the 4 header pipes and the 2 mid-pipes.

I'd bet the farm the only way to get them out is to cut the crossover open, pull the cats out and re-weld.

Just remember that #6 is check-and-balanced by #5. Name-calling isn't usually considered a personal attack if in jest and flanked with emoticons, ;)

5. No personal attacks. However, when some ****** desperately needs it for violating Rules 1-4, group dog-piles are perfectly acceptable.

And I'd still opt for an after-market header over chopping up a perfectly good (and expensive) stock header. It will cost you less and produce more of a power increase in the end.

It looks a lot like the Gen I. This is what the (respectfully borrowed) procedure looks like.

Cut as below and drill out the spot welds, Its a big gaping hole because I didn't know how big the cats were or exactly where they were

Then pull these out

Weld everything shut and get the pipe satin black ceramic coated inside and out by https://www.performancecoatings.com/index2.html in Auburn

But, if it were me, I'd opt for a header & exhaust package which would be tuned to work together when done by a name brand exhaust system fabricator.

I did remove mine on a Gen II. Well I tried going in with an air hammer and chisels. Within an hour it was obvious that cut and remove was the was way to go. Much better than having a new set of pipes made or buying a new header from the money standpoint. I think all it cost me was and hour and half labor cost. The guy did custom MC work to include building total exhaust systems. Sorry if this offends anyone, but designing projects over the internet is pretty risky business and I know I'm damn near lethal with cutting tools near what was a beautiful $15K motorcycle. If you can't afford to pay about $150 to do this kind of project, you definitely can't afford buying a new set of headers that have been butchered.

Here is a thought and good for a FRIDAY POST. I am not a lawyer and suggest you consult an attorney for advice.

It would be a violation of federal law.

Assisting you to do this, or discussing the planning, could be considered conspiracy to commit a federal crime.

Using a computer to plan a crime may be another violation of federal law.

Don't worry, the goverment dosen't really read our emails.

I am sure glad no one posted pictures of how to violate federal law.

For any further legal advice I suggest you contact Old Michael or Beemerdon.

42 U.S. Code § 7522 - Prohibited acts

(A)for any person to remove or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this subchapter prior to its sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser, or for any person knowingly to remove or render inoperative any such device or element of design after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser; or

It is kinda like all those charcoal canisters that come on BMWs that filter fumes that are coming out of the fuel tank. Every single one of those pesky things has had to be temporarily removed as part of an ongoing maintenance chore on our 4 Beemers. They most certainly will be replaced at the first practical point in the maintenance work. Once again I'll be able to ride into California without fear of being incarcerated. Sound maintenance procedures are tedious and time consuming and I'm sure detailed Cat maintenance is similar. It takes a long time to remove inspect and diagnose an issue with a Cat and many road test miles are part of the process. I know the PAIR on the FJR is also removable so as to allow maintenance and diagnostic functions. I, again temporarily, have removed mine so I can conduct some long term maintenance work.

The wonderful thing about the innumerable laws, codes and regulations that have been imposed upon us in the past years is that they are so numerous, obscure and complex that many are unenforced or simply unenforceable. Perhaps we should start a legal defense fund for any FJR rider that is now under indictment or is indicted in the future for violating 42 U.S. Code § 7522 - Prohibited acts or any similar regulation. All such people would need to do is identify themselves as needing help. Anyone out there? Buller? Buller?

Cat removal or bypassing or replacement of other EPA mandated exhaust parts, or installation of fuel injection alteration devices such as a Power Commander III, or the bypassing or elimination of PAIR system functions, as any of these actions may be seen on these forum pages, are all strictly for off-highway competition purposes.

I've noticed that there is a large fleet of FJR race bikes around the world.

"I've noticed that there is a large fleet of FJR race bikes around the world."
That's funny stuff! My former '08 was part of that fleet of "race bikes". As others noted above, don't expect a surge of power after the Cats are removed - I don't think it produced a single extra HP.

Yamaha engineers designed the whole system to work together - if you pull the Cats, then the mufflers become a bottle-neck. Now, pulling the Cats AND adding slip-on mufflers will flow exhaust faster at higher RPMs. But, it's worth noting that several dyno tests with Holeshot and Muzzy headers proved that only high-rpm horsepower improved, while torque actually DECREASED.

The only benefit I noticed after removing the Cats was less heat around my feet and shins in stop-and-go traffic. That difference wasn't dramatic - in fact, I may have been imagining it. Someone with a heat sensor (and more ambition than me) could test that theory.
