Those Exaltos sure are getting pricey. I haven't been checking regularly lately, but a quick check found the best price was $174 shipped. Anybody got a line on where to get an Exalto for cheap?

No. I am just a hoarder. :lol:

I put 9400 miles on it and took it off to burn through a few of the moto-tires I already had in inventory. That was 20,000 miles ago and it's about to go back on. And it has plenty of life left. Just like to stock up on a 'spare' when I can get one for a good price.

Y'know, the Exalto is only rated to 149mph (I know, you're not spending a lot of time at that speed...are you???) with a tread-wear rating of 400, while the A/S Plus is rated ULTRA-high performance, to 186mph and a tread-wear rating of 500. It's $23 more than the Exalto at Tirerack.com, but the higher mileage rating might be worth it to you. I'm tickled to a fiery plastic and aluminum death with mine. :lol:

BlueKnight, you should sent a private message to "Patriot" here on the FJR Forum. Mike O. is a Darksider and lives in New Orleans, I'm sure Patriot would help out a fellow Louisianan with info!

Ahhhhh.... RH! I guess you don't know from personal experience, but one of the major disadvantages of a car tire on an FJR is that it is speed limited to 130mph. At that speed with a car tar mounted it starts a nasty weave. So a 149mph speed rating is more than enough. Still, the A/S Plus does sound interesting, expecially with it's greater wear rating. But I do love the Exalto and would hate to spend all that money to find out I made the wrong decision and wished I had the Exalto. Things to ponder.

Thanks, but the used one is almost halfway worn - no bargain there.

$147 + $17.84 shipping = $164.84 Not bad. Still would like it closer to $150. Better than the one I found for $174 shipped.

$156 + $15.61 shipping = $171.61 Save a couple bucks. Still not cheap.

And Tire Rack charges $23 for shipping which makes them the all time loser at $185 shipped.

 
Have you just called a few of the local to you tire shops? No shipping cost if they just add it to their normal order.

Goodyear places sell Michelin tires too, fwiw. I'd check Sears and Costco as well. Nothing to lose but some time on hold. ;)

Yeah, been meaning to check CostCo. And I need to ask the local bare-bones shop that installed the current Exalto for $20. If I buy it from them I bet installation would be included saving a few benjamins. Of course I won't need one actually mounted for a while..........

 
I know this info is probably buried somewhere on the forum... but since there's enough posts about goat ******* I figure I can add another question in here as well right!?!? :lol:

How many of you ride at a level that involves scraping peg feelers at 40- 85+ mph? Don't make this a discussion about riding position now, that's just a reference for a combination of lean angle and force of speed being put on a tire when leaned over. I know a car tire kicks at going straight and it feels good at average corner speeds from my short experience on one.

For example, I like taking twisty roads at x2+ 5mph of the average posted 'suggested' limits. A lot of roads where it will say 30 I may be riding 60mph. Sometimes I like to power out of them on the gas too while leaned over pretty far.

Car tire good for me? Are others riding in that manner with a car tire?

Car tires are meant to go in straight lines only and the sidewalls are not made for that blahblahblah..... I scrape pegs on occasion in the corners and have yet to experience flaming death ;)

FWIW, both of those riders, Bungie and FredW, picked tires that were untried. Their results, posted to this thread, would indicate that those particular tires are less desirable for Darksiding...

In Fred's case, his test only lasted 400 miles and it's my opinion, (not necessarily shared by Fred), that he didn't give himself enough time to acclimate to the new characteristics of the CT or for the CT to break in to bike use. That in no way changes that he didn't like the changes in handling!

I originally used the tire that Fred used, the Yokohama AVID Envigor. It's a viable option. Probably not the best out there, but it did work and was pretty amazing in wet conditions. I have not had a chance to compare it to an Exalto, only my current tire choice.

I would agree that more than 400 miles was needed to break in the Yokohama tire.

I'm gonna slightly disagree with you on the used one as there's a whole lotta miles to be ridden before you even think about replacing it..... to spend an extra 100+ bones for 30-40% more life.... hmmmmmmmm. Save it for next time in a coupla years....

The corners look a bit more rounded than the center, so I am assuming the best measurement is in the center. I'll probably wear the corners off a car tire before the center tread. Add in the $20 it costs me to mount a car tire (as I won't try it myself) and the hassle, and that $100 for a brand new tire is well worth it to me. Of course I still would like to find a new one for closer to $150 as I did my first, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Tempted to try RH's tire, but I liked the Exalto so much I hate to mess with success.

 
Well I am off of the Darkside for now. After my little accident a few weeks ago the replacement bike came with a almost new set of PR2's on it, and there is no reason to change them for now. Also, I am not commuting the tons of slab miles to and from work like I use to, so I am not going through tires nearly as fast. Lastly, I was actually surprised at how easy it was to turn the FJY when I went back to a cycle tire; the bike just felt more fun to ride.

I am not saying that I wont go back to a car tire one of these days, and i have installed the different brake bar on the replacement FJR already in case I want to make the change back to the Darkside. there are certainly advantages and disadvantages to both side of the coin.

What freaking accident? Did I miss something? What replacement FJR?
