I'm in a semi rural volunteer fire department. As our population grows (west of Fort Worth), we have an increasing number of air ambulance runs where we have to set up the LZ. Daytime isn't a big problem, nor are MVAs on I-20. But, we have a growing number of MVAs on the rural roads at night. A hand-held GPS would make it much easier to vector in the helicopters. I would appreciate any recommendations you might have.
I am not really big on handhelds but let me ask my fleet manager and my assistant Rick to see what they recommend.

They have sold lots to the fire rescue guys that is helping with the current relief effort.

I will get back to you when I have an answer for you.

Thanks
Thanks for the quick response.

I suppose we could use dash mounted, but it would require one for the engine, one for the attack truck and one for the brush truck as we never know what we'll have to roll. Like most all volunteer departments, $$ is always an issue. We're supported primarily through donations and fund raisers.

I appreciate the effort and any advice to come. Be happy to send you some chili or fried catfish after our next fund raiser... :chef:

panthercity, here is the info you have requested

All hand held GPS will be able to vector in the helicopters and provide coordinate reading. I would recommend that he first read up on the following most popular GPS units at www.garmin.com and consider which features and functions he would like to have before making a buying decision:

Most popular hand held GPS:

$100 to $250 range: Garmin eTrex series (eTrex Vista and eTrex Legend are more popular)

$300 to $450.00 range: GPSMAP60C, GPSMAP 60CS, GPSMAP 76C, GPSMAP 76CS.

I would also recommend that he look at the Rino series as well. These units provide two way communication as well as GPS functionalities.

$150 - $300 range for Rino 110, 120 & 130.

$350 - $450 range for Rino 520 & 530 (new models due out Sept-Oct 2005.)

I hope this info has helped. ;)

Thank you, sir. Now, where do I send the catfish?

James,

I was going to ask about the lame database in the RINO 530. It looks to be the same one as in the 120. Radio reception and output, as well as other features appear improved, but still looks like the same lame (not road worthy) database.

You mentioned earlier about backup cameras and monitors. Actually, I think I AM interested in one. Not for my FJR, but for my airplane. What do you think is the best indash system for the money that you deal?

Also, will you post here when the TomTom Rider becomes available, please. Looks like it WILL work with gloves. That's a plus! Wish Bluetooth headsets were all stereo so they could hook up to XM or other music sources...

Thanks!

You have asked:

James, I appreciate everything you do for the forum and your assistance with everything GPS related. I saw your post a few days ago about the 2610 pricing on Amazon.com. I do have a question though. How do I know what version of maps are loaded? If not the newest, would I have to buy it or would I be entitled to a free upgrade from Garmin? THe 2610 with the motorcycle kit is $620 and is entitled to free ground shipping. Is this a good deal? Does the 2610 offer good screen clarity and color? Does it do 3D maps?
I am not sure what Amazon.com is shipping out, my guess is probably some NOH Newly Overhauld and some older version 2610 units, or worst open box returns from national chain stores, who knows what's missing or not. I would guess Garmin would upate your unit to the latest version free, but you should check with them first.

The $620 price is good if the product comes complete and it is new, not open box returns or NOH. The 2610 is near End of life and there are not much support except warranty and map update support for these units. No 3D maps, no text to speech, slower processor but you do get what you pay for.

Now I wonder if the mighty Amazon.com will answer these questions for you? ;)

Hope this information has helped.

Reply: The Rino 520 & 530 come with Built-in basemap with automatic routing capabilities. It is the only product of its kind that incorporate a two-way radio with GPS. If more detail maps is needed, it is also fully compatible with MapSource City Select which provides detailed streets for turn-by-turn guidance but there is no voice output

So what does everybody/anybody think about the new Lowrance iWay 350C?

Looks pretty nice, and I like the internal rechargeable battery feature. And cheap!!!!

My friend recently got an iWay 500C for his Bimmer LT, and its a pretty slick unit. Kinda big, but nice big readable screen, and a lot of nice features. I was against hard drive units, but now I am reconsidering. How many have actually failed. Or will fail? I guess time will tell, but I am betting the instances of failure will be miniscule.

Now the new 350C addresses the, "it's too big" problem.

Hmmmmmm........

Greg

Not sure about performance on motorcycle and if it is water proof.

Looks like a very reasonably price unit and I am not sure if it has a speaker or audio out capabilities since it uses an FM transmitter.

Worth a try, let us know how you like it after you get one.

Way to much items to test and we can't test them all, will be testing for some of the bigger players soon with some very interesting things going to happen with in the next 12 months.

Good luck and happy navigating :D

The iWay 350C's 3-1/2" color screen shows you the maps that help guide you. Meanwhile, voice prompts tell you whenever you need to make a turn. The StreetPilot 2730 offers real-time XM NavTraffic, XM WX Weather, and XM Radio capabilities. It comes ready to go, right out of the box—there's no need to download maps from your PC.

The XM Traffic, Weather, and Audio capabilities give the StreetPilot 2730 great utility, even when drivers know exactly where they are. XM NavTraffic is the first nationwide satellite-based data traffic information service to enable an overlay of current traffic conditions. The StreetPilot 2730 uses this data* to automatically calculate and suggest faster alternative routes long before traffic starts backing up.

Accidents, road construction, or other incidents affecting traffic are graphically represented as icons on the navigation map. Precise information relating to a traffic incident is also available, including the precise location of the incident, the lanes affected, and the predicted duration. Roadways are color-coded to indicate directional traffic flow speed.

Additionally, the StreetPilot 2730 can also receive XM weather data*. Current weather conditions for over 2,000 locations, and weather forecasts for 162 cities, are displayed on-screen. United States county storm and flood warnings are also highlighted, allowing motorists to make prudent driving decisions.

The StreetPilot 2730 also offers more than 150 channels of XM satellite radio**, featuring 100-percent commercial-free music, as well as more than 30 channels of news, sports, talk, and entertainment. Users can send XM and navigation audio to their car stereo through the StreetPilot’s integrated FM wireless transmitter or 3.5 mm stereo headphone/line-out plug.

The StreetPilot 2730 also comes equipped with an MP3 player that lets users take their personal music collection on the road and browse music by artist, album, song, or genre. Loading music is drag-and-drop easy—there's no need for special software. The StreetPilot 2730 also works as an audio book player, with content available for purchase from Audible.com—featuring more than 70,000 hours of audio programs from more than 200 content partners.

In addition to the turn-by-turn voice prompted navigation available in earlier StreetPilot models, the 2730 actually announces the name of upcoming streets and points of interest—letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic. Highly-detailed maps featuring nearly six million points of interest (POIs) throughout the U. S., Canada, and Puerto Rico (destinations like hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and attractions) come pre-loaded on the unit’s solid-state memory. If a driver strays off-course, the StreetPilot 2730 automatically recalculates a new route.

With POI Loader, users can also augment the pre-loaded maps with custom POI’s—such as school zones and safety cameras. In addition, a proximity alert option can warn the driver of upcoming custom POI’s. (This safety feature is designed to help reinforce the importance of traveling at appropriate and legal speeds.)

Garmin’s GXM 30™ antenna, which is included with the StreetPilot 2730, receives and processes all XM traffic, weather and audio data. For maximum portability, the magnetic, waterproof, puck-size GXM 30 can be placed on the dashboard or the roof of the vehicle.

The StreetPilot 2730 boasts a WQVGA automotive-grade color TFT display with touchscreen that automatically adjusts the unit’s backlight for optimum viewability in any amount of light. Drivers can also view the map in either a three-dimensional perspective or a top-down track-up or north-up view.

Well James, this one most definitely sounds like "The One". Pretty nifty. Do you know how much memory (gigs) is available for downloading mp3s?

Me want one. But $$$$.

When will it come down to around $600? :D

Do you know how much memory (gigs) is available for downloading mp3s?

I think it can be loaded on to a memory card, so the size of the memory card is what you will be working with.

On the older 2720 unit have about 500 MB of free memory space for custom POI, European software, and the new one I think uses additional memory card for the MP3 music.

The StreetPilot 2730 also comes equipped with an MP3 player that lets users take your personal music collection on the road and browse music by artist, album, song, or genre. Loading music is drag-and-drop easy—there's no need for special software.

Leaviing this morning to SEMA to find out more, to much stuff to test and Garmin is cranking it out faster then we can test them.

When will it come down to around $600

The dealer price is pretty close to that if you consider all the extras that it comes with, it's worth it.

Just wait till next year, I bet you will be able to get it pretty close to that price.

Currently at SEMA, found the Lowrance 350c to be a very nice small unit at a very reasonable price.

The unit is not water proof and does use a 4 GB hard drive.

It's the show winner for best in show and the price is right at $499

Thanks for the info James. I was expecting it to be waterproof, like the 500c. I think that will be the dealbreaker for me, though it seems to be quite a nice unit, especially for the price.

I guess on the top of my list is the Lowrance Iway 500c, and the new Garmin 2730. Decisions, decsions. I am in no hurry at the current time, but will most likely purchase my first GPS within the next 8 months. Perhaps some after Chrismtas price reductions?

Having fun in Vegas?

Re-think the Iway 500c....I had one for just about a year and just sold it. It was having hard drive issues that made it not suitable for a motorcycle. The mp3 player would 'skip' every so often...up to six times in one song. This was a replacement from the factory since the first Iway would freeze-up and not refresh the screen at speeds above 75mph. The replacement, updated to version 1.4, would still occasionaly freeze but not as often as the 1.3 version. I will probably be getting a Garmin next year. Just my honest opinion from a person with experience. You can see how it looked on the FJR if you click on "MY WEBPAGE" link.

So James.... How did SEMA play out...

Lookin for more input about the Garmin 2730...

This is a Flash Memory unit right? just to confirm...

MP3 space? is it on a memory card... or on the internal memory...

Hope you had a good time...

thanks

I like the look of this unit, but list price of $1292.29 U.S.D. does this price include a tube of KY.

I will wait until the price is more palletable. ;)

GXM 30 XM smart antenna (includes flange mnt, USB ext. cable) delivers XM Satellite Radio, NavTraffic and Weather services to your compatible Garmin. Roughly 3 inches in diameter, the GXM 30 processes all XM information and sends the finished data to your unit for display. The GXM 30 requires a XM Satellite subscription(s). Traffic services are available only in select cities where XM Nav Traffic coverage exists.

Now that the newer versions of the SP GPS units are coming delivered preloaded with all of the maps, is the option of sitting at the PC to create routes and then upload to the GPS still available? I notice that a CD/DVD (?) is not supplied with the new units.

IIRC this is possible with the 2610.

Hey guys

If you wish to have a unit that is portable and fun to use, this it the unit.

Go to your local GPS store and look at one and buy one from them.

Check it out, I really like what I find it can do, calculates fast and easy to use! ;)

I am not trying to sell anyone, buy from your local GPS store please!

Remember I keep saying support your local retailer? Here is what is going on to help your local retailer with Garmin products.

"I thought that Garmin had more online retailers than storefront retailers. I was incorrect in that assumption. Garmin has 86 online retailers in the U.S. and Canada. However, Garmin has many more storefront retailers. For example, in my home state of Indiana alone, Garmin has over 125 storefront retailer locations that sell Garmin equipment. "
