Hey all, sorry if I'm interrupting any threads here, but I wanted to toss in my "happy customer" post.

I sent a couple emails in requesting pricing and such on a Garmin 2610 with the MC kit from Autonav. I made the phone call to place the order and was told up front that the unit was backorded at the time and might take three weeks. To me, this is a good thing. A lot of vendors would have charged me and not said anything until I called back a week later looking for it. Kudos to Autonav for customer service on that point!

The unit showed up, was installed, maps loaded and I've been using it every day since then on both the bike and the truck. I also got the free update to the maps from Garmin due to the date that I ordered the unit. No troubles, no problems. All is good! I'd order from Autonav again in a heartbeat if I needed another GPS.

The 2610 rocks, btw! :agent:

Count me as a happy customer! If anyone at the EOM asks, I'll be pointing them to Autonav and 04FJR4ME.

James, is there any word yet on when the Tom Tom Rider may be released?

Agree regarding the mount, Display have changed: the new 2720 is now 3.8”-diagonal WQVGA color, automotive-grade, sunlight-readable TFT display; 3.3”W x 1.7”H; 454 x 240 pixels and the 2620 is 3.3" W x 1.7" H, 305 x 160-pixel display with bright, automotive-grade 8-bit 256-color LCD touch screen
so is there a nifty enclosed mount like sport bike effects has that fits the 2720? did just the screen size change or the entire box?

thanks!

The screen physical size did not change, it is a better and brighter display screen.

Not sure, I have not had time to catch up on the Tom Tom Rider, been testing the Tom Tom 700, Magellan 800 and the Garmin 2720 side by side, don't have much time to do anything else. Will try to follow up on your request to see what's available with Tom Tom Rider.

Hello 05fjrBluedevil Mike

You have asked:

[Mike] I'm very interested in a gps unit, I guess I'm looking for your direction on this. I would like it to offer turn by turn instruction, maybe have blue tooth etc.

[Auto Nav] Mike, The Tom Tom 700 currently have Bluetooth capabilies and there are some PDA GPS nav system that is also Bluetooth friendly, you will need to look around to see which unit you like best.

[Mike} I guess I tring to figure out what you recomend, should it use cards or have a hard drive?

[Auto Nav] I would recommend that you use a system that does not have a hard drive since there have been report of hard drive failures with navigation systems on motorcycles.

[Mike] It will be used on my bike but also in my truck, is unit you speaking of water proof?

[Auto Nav] The Tom Tom Rider is Bluetooth enable and water proof, but it is not ready for sale yet, The Garmin 2720 is water proof but not Blue tooth enable.

[Mike] How is your side by side test going?

[Auto Nav] Which side by side test are you referring to? We test constantly and most units we are testing is not yet available for sale.

[Auto Nav] BTW what are you selling these things for?

[Auto Nav] Again, not sure which system you are referring to? We sell to FJR forum members at cost, but you have to prove you own a FJR.

Thx MIke

No problem and I also email you back with my reply

Looks like this is the place to get the mount...

On Garmin's website.. the 2620 - 5.6" W x 3.2" H x 2.0" D unit dimensions

the 2720 - Unit dimensions: 5.6” W x 3.2” H x 2.0” D

so this is promising... I really like the looks of this mount.. expensive, but beautiful !!

Thanks Warpdrv, that's what I wanted to know. I want that setup also with the 2720 and that very cool mount.

I have been asked to provide the part numbers of the GPS enclosure on my bike, so here they are.

1. The enclosure can be seen by clicking here.

2. The bracket can be seen by Clicking here.

Don't forget that SportbikeEffects.com gives a 10% discount to Forum members on purchases of $50.00 or more. This discount is calculated from the advertised prices (may or may not be MSRP), and applies to product totals on our Web site. It applies to all products and can be combined with our Monthly sales. Here is how it works. During the checkout phase of an online purchase, there is a box where you can place a Discount Code or Coupon Number. Your Coupon is "FJR1300". The discount will be figured automatically on checkout. Telephone orders also apply.

I have a set of Heli-Risers on my bike, will that mount work with them..

as I can see that the distance might be different.

I think I can just use the front mounting bolts and I like the alluminum enclosure, instead of the black, for me.. :D

thanks for your help for pointing us in the right direction for the Housing, and bracket

Just wondering why some of you are not looking into the Touratech mounts for your Garmin units? It looks pretty impressive and it also locks!

I saw that, but the thing just looks so gawdy, IMO. I just liked the streamline and less obtrusive look of the enclosed mount... I know its expensive, the price of a gps, but with buying a FJR Im all about the looks...

FJR4ME, Did you get the chance to see if that enclosed mount will work with the 2720 yet?

I still havent' decided on whether to buy a Quest 2, or 2720.

THanks

Nope, I am not about to go buy one so I can see if it will work since I don't use the Garmin unit on my FJR, not to say the Garmin unit is not nice, but I have been using Magellan stuff for a while and just kind of got use to them.

Anyhow, I will need to test some other units on the bike, and the mount would be to much work to bolt on and off, most of the time I just want to slap a new beta unit on then off so I can test another one shortly after.

I think they are about a buck fifty, I am not a dealer for Touratech so I don't think they will give me any discount on it, but if they will, I will pass on the discount to this forum.

It is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of the enclosed unit and yes, the enclose unit looks nice but the weak point is at the mounting, the case is solid, but if someone wish to take it off the bike, I think it can be snapped off without to much effort.

I use the Stem mount myself and it works for me.

Hey, Amazon is having a pretty good sale on some end of life Garmin 2610 and 2620 currently, and some are Newly overhaul that you guys can pick up cheap. This maybe the time to buy some of these system from Amazon.com, they are really trying to move them and the price is less then what I can get the for.

Make sure they are new and not NOH, there is a big difference on warranty and quality on old hardware compare to new hardware, CPU processor is faster on the later models along with a few extra stuff. You guys would have to figure out some of it yourselves.

Good luck!

Its about $165.00 but they also have this one:

for $50.00 less. They recomend the first one for big singles and twins (bigger dampers), but the cheaper one should be fine for inline fours like the FJR.

Cool! Thanks Rogue. Now all I need is a flippin GPS.

Oh yeah, and the $800 or so to buy one..... :erm:

James,

I'm in a semi rural volunteer fire department. As our population grows (west of Fort Worth), we have an increasing number of air ambulance runs where we have to set up the LZ. Daytime isn't a big problem, nor are MVAs on I-20. But, we have a growing number of MVAs on the rural roads at night. A hand-held GPS would make it much easier to vector in the helicopters. I would appreciate any recommendations you might have.

I will admit to ignorance of GPS, if I get lost on the bike, I just stop and rattle the change in my pocket. MY ex's attorney will find me promptly...

TIA

I am not really big on handhelds but let me ask my fleet manager and my assistant Rick to see what they recommend.

They have sold lots to the fire rescue guys that is helping with the current relief effort.

I will get back to you when I have an answer for you.

Thanks
