GPS Mount

I have been looking at the ram mounts for my GPS I have a small nuvi 200. Is the clutch resivor bracket the best spot or should I mount it in the center of the bars? Thanks for any help in advance!

I use the Techmount stem mount to locate the GPS between the bars.

I put my 2610 on a Ram ball at the clutch, because I'm a cheap ******* and the stem mount cost too much.

There is no "right" place, just where it works for you. Some use the clutch, some the stem nut, some on a shelf above the gauges.

I made a mount for my garmin 2730. It bolts to the two tank bolts below the stem nut. It's surprising sturdy, and with the gps mounted, the top is level with the reservoirs. I'll see if I can get a picture on here. Not good with that stuff.

My opinion is that higher placement is better. You don't want to have your vision and head down too long when you are checking your GPS. I've mounted mine on the left handlebar and it sits up on a RAM mount. Photos if you need. Just say the word.

I agree with you on the heads up. I use the voice directions on the gps so I don't need to look at for more than a second anyway. But I like the unit tucked in between the bars. I would probably find a way to knock it off if it were anywhere else.

I am joining the ranks of the GPS enabled for my annual romps through the western US. I found this mount and am going to build it myself. 60pounds ($90US) is a little steep. Should be able to build it for less than $10 US. Will give the old man something to do in the shop this winter. Mine won't have the fancy Yamaha tuning fork etched in, but I bet I can find a Yamaha sticker to put there. Really is a simple design. Will work perfect for my setup.

MNFRF05's mount uses the same concept as mine, only it looks alot better.

One advantage to the "Tank" mounted gps is it is always pointed forward and doesn't turn with the bars. With that in mind, you could also use the shelf mounted method above the gauges, if you need your gps mounted higher.

Believe me, it's a GREAT deal.

There are several ways you can do it, I suggest getting the Garmin m/c mounting kit - $30 at Amazon, and the Techmount FJR stemstand mount - $70 - Clicky HERE, along with the $15 GPS accessory mounting plate - HERE.

You can also mount on a dash, or use a RAM ball on the stem nut, or even on one of the handlebars.

I mounted a ram ball on the the front side of my magnetic tankbag, and mount my GPS there. I really like it. I connect one cord to the bike, and it powers my tank bag, which has the Autocomm, Sirius, GPS, and auxiliary plug in it. It is solid, simple, and I can take it off the bike and throw it into the luggage when I stop. I can also use all of the same items on my KLR if I want too. I switched bikes on a trip with a buddy, and since he had a powerlet, I could have all my goodies while I rode his bike.

I've only got this one off kilter pic of it on my bike handy, nothing is obscured from the drivers position. This is taken from off the bike so the angle looks weird.

Only at full hard right, and only with the shield all the way down. And there's enough give in the shield that nothing actually wants to break. It isn't a factor.

I drilled the steering cap/nut on my FJR, mounted (screwed) a RAM ball (countersunk screw) then just added a 3" RAM stem and the Nuvi 780 mount an viola! I also ran electrical along the frame under the tank, through the frame access holes and up to the GPS. Pretty clean set up...if I don't say so myself. I find it to be the best location for the GPS as it's not an eye sore to look at, looks prefessionally mounted, and is an easy glance just below the indicator lights allowing full view of the entire instrument panel. Above all, the price was right!

For the Price: THIS, offered up by Gramps, is probably an easier way to go. As a note: Since I already had all the parts in hand from a previous set-up, I didn't purchase this.

Goes without saying, "not for everyone" but works well. Also allows room for additional stuff.

Also looks better "in person" than in pics.

Probably not good if you're trying to keep the "sport look" and ride without your bags all the time.
