My front tire was 3 inches from their bike, i'm at a stop, beginning to engage the clutch...guess you're a better rider than I, no where to go....ah yes, that wonderful thing called hindsight. Guess ya had to be there!

So, you were in the center of the intersection then? They turned left (their left) across your path of travel, correct? Did they blow through the occupied crosswalk that you were waiting to clear out before you proceeded?

I'm confused.

Rode to Lake Chelan on friday to visit my kid. Got 51 mpg on the way up (calculator). Ran 65 to 70 with an occasional pass. Great weekend, however while downtown waiting for a crosswalk to clear, I'm in the intersection, a kid and his girlfiend on a sport bike decide to make a left turn in front of me. Laid it down (gently) to avoid knocking them off their bike. A few scratches to the mirror and left bag. Glad I put those sliders on last week. They took the hit. Got 47.4 mpg on the way home ridin 80 most the way and bucking some serious winds. Damn, I love this bike....scratches and all, still goes like a bat outta hell. Somebody stop me. HeHe

So you are saying that you are not skilled enough to USE YOUR BRAKES adequately.

Sounds like you need alot of braking practice along with some counter steering or swerving practice.

As an MSF Instructor and one who has ridden on the streets daily for 35 years and NEVER LAID it down I cringe when someone proudly exclaims that. ** Trying to avoid and accident by purposely having an accident by "laying it down" is never a correct response as statistics bear out. You have no brakes and NO CONTROL when sliding along on metal and just accomplished what you tried to avoid. **ESPECIALLY when you have an ABS system on your MC..

I made my decision in a split second with 3 inches to decide in, I'll stick by it and say that I humbly bow in all your critics greatness! Just passing along an incident and some great gas milage info.

Um, if you had the ROW, low speed and the larger of the two bikes, why on Earth would you have given in to a lay-down? I'da hit the kid and knocked him on his arse, then picked up his GF, tossed her on the pillion and rode off.

Don't take it too hard Geezer2. Your just getting FJRForum's version of 'tough love'.

I think the problem is that you explained your incident in a way that most of us didn't understand. I still don't understand what happend. But me, being the mellow, nice type around here, well, I am just glad you are ok and still around to take all this crap from everybody.

I had moved into the intersection when a woman and youngster in a wheelchiar entered the crosswalk, where I'm from pedestrians have right of way, whether they're right or wrong...so I waited. The other rider was to my right at a stop sign, no signal!!! I looked at him, then at her as she cleared the crosswalk, and stared to engage, guess who suddenly showed IN FRONT of me

I am sorry to hear about your accident, but glad to hear you're ok and your bike had only minimal damage.

I am sure you did everything you could not to drop the bike. The last thing I want to hear is someone punking me after a situation like that, especially by assumption. A simple, "I'm sorry" would suffice.

Geezer, don't worry about it too much. I think what threw everybody was that you said you had to "lay it down." Most people use that statement when they are traveling at highway speeds and since they do not know how to correctly use thier brakes, they lay the bike down and then claim that was the best way to avoid a crash. From your description, I would say you began moving, hit your brakes before your clutch was fully disengaged while your support foot was on its way to its peg. You didn't get your leg down fast enough, so you laid the bike down, which here, is commonly called dropping the mammajamma...People freak about about other people claiming "laying it down" was the best action. It is like people saying they were once told by a cop that if they had been wearing their seatbelt, they would have been killed. It is usually bullshit.

Ya did what ya had to do. Second-guessers weren't there.

But FYI, "had to lay 'er down" is a phrase used sarcastically by some to characterize riders so unskilled that they can't avoid an impact any other way such as by swerving or stopping. It was just an unfortunate choice of words, that's all. Chances are you saved everyone significant damage by your choice, with resulted in only very minor damage.

I can tell that you have never taken a MSF course.....metal/plastic sliding on the road will not stop as good as rubber....espicially with abs brakes, and a controlled avoidance maneuver. Not to hop on trashing someone, but hoping it will make you think different the next time.

I don't think so. If he's heading north then the other rider making the left was heading west. not to his immediate right but in the lane to his right.
