Hand held Cell Phone ban in Nova Scotia

Well since April 1st it is illegal to use a hand held cell phone while driving in Nova Scotia. Despite being guilty of the offense (before it was an offense) I am glad to see it. I bought myself a hands free unit months ago but didn't use it much. Now that I have to I am using it. I also learned this week that with the voice dialing I can just tell it the number and it dials it. What will they think of next? Someday I am sure they are going to actually put a man on the moon!!

Also coming into law on the same day, it is now an offense to smoke in your car if there is a child under 16 in the vehicle.

I will assume both of these laws apply to motorcycles as well.

weeeeeeellllll...here in Chi town they are floating a law to make it illegal to be on a phone while crossing the street. I'm all for it, myself...

Good idea, but, I just got back from visiting my parents in N.J., which just enacted a not cell phone in the car law; I saw a whole lot of people ignoring it and it's probably unenforceable anyway. Good idea though.

We've had the cell phone law in NY for a while now. Many people still openly hold their phone up to their ear while driving. Every once in a while I hear about someone who got a ticket for it, but not very often.

The problem, as I see it, is USING a cellphone, whether it's hands held or hands free.

It's the mental distraction that's the problem, not the elimination of one hand from the driving process.

I am capable of driving a police car with lights and sirens, listening to and using a police radio, listening to and using a cell phone, and occasionally using a car computer.

These types of laws are based solely on the few people who ruin it for the rest of us.

My solution would be to up the ante on traffic violations if the person is on a cell phone. If they cross the fog line and the fine is typically, say, $100, it should be $200 if they are on a cell phone with higher points associated with it too. This way, those of us that can actually multi-task aren't punished!

So what if they can't signal because they're busy holding the phone.

So what if they can't judge merging on a freeway on ramp because they are more interested in their phone call.

So what if they inexplicably slow down to answer or make a point in their phone call, that traffic tie-up would likely happen anyway.

So what if a person talks "with their hands" while on the phone...oh, yeah, they're supposed to be DRIVING their motor vehicle.

So what if they suddenly change lanes without looking and force you over a lane, into traffic or off the shoulder...they have a right to their phone call.

Wouldn't it be nice if the above were isolated incidents? But they're not! Every one of these scenarios have happened to me in my work truck or on my motorcycle, and many of them repeatedly.

Ideally, Scott is correct. But who is going to tell those who cannot safely and conscientiously operate a moving vehicle that they should not or cannot talk on their cell phone unless there is an enforceable guideline in the vehicle or penal code?.

And Helio Castroneves is "capable" of driving a 1500hp Indy car around a 90 degree corner at 100mph, but I don't think it's a valid argument at all.

YOU are a professional driver, logging thousands of hours a year behind the wheel.

Professional drivers aren't the problem. It's Sally Soccermom and Harry Highschooler who are barely capable of masturbating without a manual, much less drive while doing ANYTHING short of breathing that's the problem.

I have to disagree. Any time you multi-task you can't possibly give your full attention to any one area. I realize in the case of a police officer the need to stop a crime may outweigh the risk associated with multi-tasking. But for the vast majority of us the call we are taking or making isn't more important than giving our attention to the road. In fact maybe we should stop making our cars; offices and a home away from home and fewer people would lose lives due to "accidents".

I think all phone use should be banned from moving vehicles. I know I never wore my seatbelt until it became law and I was in the majority. Yet now I can't imagine anyone getting behind the wheel without one. And frankly, not wearing a seat belt is only likely to add danger to yourself. Using phones, computers, dvd players all increase the risk to those around you. I have been cut off many times by yahoos who were trying to dial a number or just drifting off in a conversation.

How come they did that all those years ago but only recently thought of putting wheels on suitcases?
