Last week, I made a solo run up to some good roads just north of here.

But I didn't bring a camera

.......Just kidding.

I brought a pile of cameras and took a pile of pictures.

The route in brief -

Up 5 in the dark (4-ish) to Red Bluff.

36 east to 3.

3 north through happening Hayfork and on up to 299.

299 to Weaverville, and then up 3 a bit more.

Then back to 299 and out to the ocean.

Down 101 to Fortuna, aaaaaand THEN....all the way back to Red Bluff on 36 again.

Then finally, back down the FIVE, as the sun disappeared on my right.

Just over 700 miles, but none of it tedious. Not even 5! It was a good day.

(Some days you just feel extra good riding. This was one of them.)

Here we go, lightly captioned.

I stopped in the parking lot of that riverside bar and restaurant where just a few weeks ago,

I schooled Fairlaner in 8-ball whilst FJRONAMISSION and Bokerfork looked on in awe,

....and played pool in each other's pockets. :D

That'll be all of the "while riding" photos. My normally sure hands failed me, and I sort of dropped

my little Canon at cruising speed. It bounced and tumbled, ...and stopped working.

I rode very quickly - for me - most of the way back east. Good music, and the sun behind me.

Trying to appreciate the "now".

I only stopped at a couple of places for photos.

Gatorade and a Snickers Dark. (Man, isn't that the BEST candybar on earth?)

IMG_0890.jpg

The hundred-odd miles of 36 went by too quickly, and I was back in Red Bluff long before dark.

I stopped here, and sat for a bit, and thought about things.....and took another picture of my bike.

IMG_0893.jpg

Then it was back on I-5 South for a couple of hours. And home.

This was a bit lame as ride reports go, but I found this to be one of the most enjoyable rides I've taken

in a long time. I'd ridden all of these roads many times before but, as I mentioned earlier,

there are some days that are just right.

Hey. Thanks for taking the time.

Comments most welcome.

OM - You da man!!! Great pix and ride.

I can't believe you! Are you even human???? I did a similar route in two days, you did it in one day! Plus you took a ton-O-pix, you had time for that...? Plus I bet it was mighty hot in ole Hayfork etc....

Funny thing, at Bridgeville, my friend was running low on fuel, light on saying fill me. We saw Bridgeville, turned went over the "bridge" no gas station in sight. The town looked deserted. Made it to some other place with no name and filled up.

Their little bridge fest looked like the dogs bullocks!

Bummer about the camera Mike. I did hear however than Canon still makes a point-and-shoot or two ;) . Might have to pick another one up someday.

The gas cap shot turns my crank, thanks for the pics.

As usual great pix.

I always wondered what was inside those Canon thingies.

I hear there may be a little FJR get together in middle October sometime that will run some of these same roads

As time nears we will start another thread.

Great pics Mike. And I always wanted to see what's inside one of those cameras anyway. Can you take it apart further?

That's cool, I was just there, part of the ride I did was 36 from Suzanville, then hit 3 to 299 to Weaverville then north to Yreka. There is a 8 or 9 mile section of twisties half way through the section of 3 between Weaverville a Yreka that is incredible. I have never seen twisties like that. They were having the county fair in Hay Fork that weekend. Need to remember to ride during the week.

Bluesy, as I entered the fray, I did smell an "air" of celebration,........man. :D

Brad, I may end up getting a new camera out of it - FREE! Best Buy warranty is good thing. More later.

Get the sonofabitch on the calendar Steve. A fellow's got to plan ahead.

OooOOOoooH! Someday the kids'll want me gone let me ride all day
Send them away to camp or something Patrick. Riding season doesn't last forever. Well, okay. It DOES last forever.

After all, we're not in Owosso.

I could. With a hammer. As it was, I got pixels all over my gloves.

That sounds just terrible. I'll go back and see if anything can be done, greg. ;)

Thanks for the comments all.

You really know how to hurt a guy, OM. Here I am, on a major road diet, and you show me pix like that! Are you trying to knock me off the "wagon"? Most tempting!!

It doesn't matter what camera you use. Just keep the pix flowing. They give some of us great pleasure. Thanks.

Alan

What is that little gray string thing that's hanging off the camera. I wonder what that does.

I couldn't help but notice that you're parked on the "liquor" side of the store.

In Weaverville.

IMG_0765.jpg

Why don't you just go ahead and admit it. The Marathon Bingo was the primary reason for this ride.

Absolutely beautiful shot, Michael. This is why everybody looks forward to your ride reports.

Gatorade and a Snickers Dark. (Man, isn't that the BEST candybar on earth?)

I'd be hard pressed to name a better one. (Reeses peanut butter cups comes close).

About a month ago the wife and I rode up to Ore to visit my dad. On the way back we swung over to the coast and did Hwy 36 from Fortuna to Red Bluff. That has to be one of the best rides I have ever done. I told the wife we will be back to to ride it again. But to ride up there and back in one day.. I think I would stay the night on the coast and make it a 2 day run.

Great stuff as usuall O/M, I remeber you telling me that you shot left handed. If I did that I would be buying a camara every time I ride!

madjack, you are fast becoming one of my favorite smartasses. (And the friggin' competition is fierce.)

That little gray string is actually to blame for my fumble. Not because I don't loop it around my wrist, but rather

because it grabbed my clutch lever and yanked the camera from my grip. I should have removed it when I got the thing.

And concerning the camera - Though I seldom purchase warranties when I buy electronics, I'd made an exception when I got this Canon SD790IS, (at BEST BUY) BECAUSE the sales gal mentioned that it covered accidental damage as well.

"So if I drop it out the window of my car, y'all will replace it?"

"Yes sir, if it can't be repaired."

"How about if I drop it in a swimming pool?"

"Same. Repair or replace."

So because I knew I'd be using it primarily while riding, I figured it would just be a matter of time before I did a... Hudson. ;)

About $30 bucks, and they replaced a $200 camera. Diggity dog!

That is a widely held opinion Brother Kromm. And going east on it, the 20-30 miles up just past Mad River = most funnest.

I always wondered what was inside those Canon thingies.
Me, too. Thanks for conducting the science experiment, OM!

Wayne, keep an eye on the Ride Planning page. Steve is working on a 3-day weekend. IF it's like last year: Red Bluff, Hwy 36 to North on Hwy 3 to Yreka for the night. From Yreka, North on I-5 to West on Hwy 96 to Willow Creek, then Hwy 299 East to Weaverville where we took Hwy 3 SOuth to Hwy 36 West to Fortuna.

Motel stays in Yreka and Fortuna, then home on Sunday. A few of us headed South on Hwy 101 to Hwy 1 to Fort Bragg and took Hwy 20 West to get home around the top of Clear Lake.

Uhm, Steve, how are the plans coming?????

Oooohhhh Sounds very tempting. I'll stay tuned to the CA ride planner for this one. OM, great shots, Hwy 3 about a month ago was awesome! My favorite section (so far) is between 299 and 36, especially after sitting in road construction delays on 299 west of Redding for about 30 plus minutes! Better look for a rubber camera next time around!
