So, I've been looking, and lusting, for a dual sport bike (of some kind) for quite a while. Way back last winter I was thinking I needed a light trail bike, so I could get deep into the dirty, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I'd probably be doing an awful lot of tarmac to get to the good stuff.

And now, thanks in part to Frenchie's outrageously excellent ride report this past summer, I've also got this thing in the back of my mind about getting up to do the biggest state of the union before I'm too old and decrepit to enjoy it. Sure, you can do it on the FJR, but why not do it on a bike designed to handle the haul road?

I toyed with the idea of getting one of the new-gen KLRs. I looked at a very clean, low mile DR650. I even looked at a KTM 640 LC4 Adventure, but the singles scene left me... wanting something more.

Today I looked at a 2005 Tiger that was pretty darned scruffy looking, and the owner wanted too much dinero. And then, finally I found "the one" I was looking for. It was right there at my favorite used bike dealer in Concord NH. Same guy I bought my VFR and FJR at previously. In retrospect, why had I been wasting my time looking elsewhere?

Yep, it's a 2004 Man-strom, 100% lock stock. The PO apparently had never heard of farkles, and seems he didn't like riding it on dirt. It does have a few miles racked up on the clock (36k) but it seems to have been pretty well cared for, and it runs darned well (for a stock bike). It will need a PCIII (don't they all?) and it came with no bags or any off-road protection, so I'll be buying all of that stuff for it really soon. But, with the age and miles on it, I got it for (what I think) is quite a reasonable price ($3800), so I'll be able to afford to gussy it up with all the appropriate farkle-ations to get this Ole' Man down and dirty!!

I know you've all seen these bikes before,

But this one is much different. '

Cause now it's mine!! :yahoo:

congratulations, ya bastid! One of my dreams too. Maybe I'll win the lottery. First stop would be to grab a PDP form for the new tuning fork version.

Hva fun farkeling that beauty. I'm jealous.

Very nice.

With all the talk about the Super Tenere I have been wondering how it would stack up against a man-Strom.

Tyler,

I think it was a weak reference to the 'Man-Strom' Forgive him. he has new bike lust.
I got the reference... just chiding him a bit cause I do that from time to time. :D
Hell yes, and we do appreciate that, Ty. ;)

Yeah, oooh, yeah...

Spank me, mommy! Spank me!!

PS - C'mon Russ, cut me some slack here. I didn't think the reference was all THAT weak...

:p

PPS - Russ, your solo XC trip is part of my motivation to get out and get something done in the next couple of years, too. Between you and Frenchie how's a guy supposed to go to work?

Just based on the wimpy little 1/2 hour ride back from Concord, it is going to be a great little bike.

Can't wait to get it all dirty...

I had an 05 DL1000 and really liked it. A Corbin Dual Canyon style seat made it quite comfortable. I did an SS1000 with that bike in 2006, and the only part of my body that hurt at the end was my hands.

If you really want to get off road, you're going to want to consider some tire options. The Metzeler Tourance or Bridgestone Trail Wings are really not good off road choices, or even good gravel road choices. But they're nice on pavement.

The engines are very reliable (I have a TL-1000 set up on the water break dyno with an aftermarket box to fool the fuel injection program). If its had its regular oil changes and not been run without coolant, it should give good service.

I hope you enjoy it. I enjoyed mine, and I've thought about buying another one to replace it (traded it in 2007) two or three times. I have seller's remorse occasionally on most bikes, but then the reality of dealing with the overhead of more bikes kicks in and I'm happy to have thinned the herd.

Yeah, Fred...you bastage!

It's bad enough you were lusting for one, then you buy it...and post pictures. :angry2:

Bastage!!! :bleh:

Dammitall....I've been yearning and you aren't helping my self control.
