Same goes here Hal, if you need a place to stop for the night or just kick back for awhile on this trip, mi casa is open here in Antioch, Ca.. We could even go down to my local gym and work off some of these hot dogs you'll be packin away while on your journey. If you need a place in Chicago, let me know. I live in Chicago and know where all 3 I've seen posted here are, and the quickest,safest way there(it helps to be a medic once in awhile). As long as you're not afraid of big dogs, our "little" one is 75lbs, the house is open. I'll even take a day off(I work 24 on 72 off) and show you what you wanna see.
I know it's a ways off, but the offer's as good 2 yrs from now as it is today, unless I'm dead. I don't think the wife will honor it unless I'm alive, must be one of those female things

Hope I'm not too late to throw another dog on the fire, but since you're running past Sioux City, Iowa anyway, stop at Coney Island. Here's a review;

Don't know why, exactly. They make their own rolls, just white bread, but there's something about them. Coneys are big there too, but I like the dogs. And for some reason, chocolate milk. Guess it's just the combination.

I've updated the list - and there are now 83 different locations - which will give me a selection of waypoints to choose from in each of the states with multiples. This will give me an option in those states.

Another variable waypoint for WV, Dairy Queen on Rt 20 in Hinton, WV - "best dogs in southern WV" according to a friend of mine who is a former WV State Policeman and worked all over southern WV. I gotta admit, they were pretty good, especially b/c he way buying!

Otto's on Woodstock in Portland. Holy bejeebers do they have some of the best sausage/doggies around!

A "dog" I like... grilled mild Johnsonville Italian sausage (with sweet basil)... served on a soft hoagie roll with saute'd bell pepper and onion, topped with melted Provolone and whatever condiments plus a cold ass Blue Moon Pale Ale... hell yeah. You guys get anywhere near Birmingham or North Alabama, you'll have a place to crash plus the aforementioned culinary offering.
Ever had a Sonoran Hot Dog? It's a dog wrapped in bacon, then grilled. Quite a few places in Tucson serve them, but I go to El Guero Canelo since it's near my house. The local Tucson paper has a video of how they make them. The Carne Asada is pretty good there too.
