I can see Don buying wing farkles now. He will end up with more chrome than mine and don't forget the cup holders. I've got the 34oz Butlers. Then he will dark side it.

Congrats Don. Nothing wrong with buying a BMW. Or six (just ask Jimmy three-stints).

Between you and Warchild, I've gotten a bit wound up myself and also went out and bought an older BMW:

It's a 2007 Z4 M Coupe, the last car BMW put the glorious inline six S54 engine in after moving to a V8 for the last M3, which has since shifted to a turbo 6. It's much better looking than my older Z3 coupe (the "clownshoe") which I have always regretted selling. This one stays in the garage for infrequent outings.

330 hp, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, and limited to 160mph. A splendid 8000rpm redline, but super fat torque cureve. Only about 1800 made for NA. And no, Fairlaner, you can't drive it, since you'd just get another ticket.

Thank goodness for the high depreciation of German cars. Too bad they hadn't yet made any progress on the cupholders in 2007.

Hmmm...after all the build-up I thought you were buying a 'Wing!

Congrats Don!!!

Gorgeous George I'd thought about buying a Hondoo Lead Wing, but since my Parents were married when I was born: The Honda Corp. wouldn't sell one to me!

Since getting a Dairy Queen in town I have been in the market for a Wing. No Starbucks yet so a Beemer will have to wait.

Just found out this morning my long time Mexico riding Amigo Brian "El Jefe" Boles has two SMOKERS in his garage, if I can score them they're going up to FJRay for restoration!

"RD350 #1 and #2 - There's a complete smoker between the two carcasses. All it needs is some bucks and the kind of free time retired ******** have on their hands."

I know a Retired ******* in Chandler that has some bucks and plenty of free time those retired ******** have on their hands. Seriously, I owned two 1976 Yamaha RD400's; the green one was my commuter bike, the red one was my track bike I ran at Laguna Seca: Just 90 miles north of my Morro Bay home! JSNS, I LOVE SMOKERS!

Congrats, Papa. That is a nice looking survivor. I also had a '94 R1100RS; mine was red. It was a heck of a nice bike with plenty of BMW boxer character, but not quite so agricultural as those earlier air heads. You could actually enjoy a spirited ride on one of these.

Is this BMW the model with the self folding side stand while the bike was parked and the open for no reason while you are moving side cases?
No. No self folding sidestand or self opening side cases on the '94.

Beyond that it is a '94 if I am not mistaken this was long before the boxer experienced surging issues or the final drive would leak oil like a pre 1978 Triumph.
The '94 was the first year of the oil head, so it was also the first year for the fuel injection. These bikes DO have surging issues in stock trim, but that is readily fixed with the Techlusion FI box (like a power commander) and a good TBS with a TwinMax vacuum gauge. My guess is that the PO will have already addressed these issues in 50k miles of prior life.

I do think that this was prior to the self destructing final drives, but in any case the R1100 engine was not exactly a "high power" engine, so the strain on that FD is not very extreme.

Freddie Bear definitely knows his Beemers, Fontanaman his answers are right on! My 1996 BMW R1100GS didn't surge, but many of the Type 259 Oilheads did. JSNS!

Don, have you ever split the case on one of these?
Maybe we can do a deal here . . .

No BB, I have only done the top ends! Give me a smoking hot deal on these two Yamaha derelicts taking up valuable space in your garage, I will run them up to my Mechanic Friend FJRay in LaPine, Oregon to make ONE cherry RD350 out of these two. When I croak I will leave this bike to you in my Will, good deal for you because I have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel anyway! jes' sayin' and nuff said ese, Muerte!

I miss my Daytona Special something fierce. If I could find a cherry one at a good price, I'd have another RD/RZ in the stable.

Have any of you ever bought your dream bike from yesteryear and been underwhelmed?

I didn't like my CB550 because it was underpowered, same thing with the XS850.

However I loved my XS Eleven. I am wondering if I would get on one today and be totally underwhelmed because of the flimsy handling and motor that today's motors surpass.

Come on now Wheatie you are talking to an Old Guy that still wants to "do" Cher again and make it an even once, even if it is underwhelming I still want to "do" Cher twice and take her to Brunch! jes' sayin' and nuff said, HUBBA-HUBBA!

If you make allowances for the spindly double-cradle frame, the XS1100 can still produce smiles. I did my SS1000 on a 1977 XS750.

My dream bike was a Laverda Jota .... Now there is some scary handling!

Haven't done it, but I don't have any illusions that the '75 Z1 or '78 GS1000EC would seem anything but underpowered, wallowing and slow to stop . . . now that I've been so spoiled by modern MC technologies. I still think that having current restorations of those two would make for pretty spectacular trips down nostalgia lane, though.
I could probably say the same thing about past skis from the straight ski and long ago era, though I don't think the nostalgia factor would be there. As for Cher? Not a twinge of jealousy if Don were somehow able to get her to put on a blindfold and agree to do him once (or however many times it took to cardiac arrest in her bed).

I think it mostly depends on what you expect out of the old bike. If you want it to do everything that your FJR does for you now, then there is no way. But if you just want to go out on an occasional day ride and stir up some nostalgic feelings, then yeah it will probably be fun.

Many past bikes I got rid of for good reasons and would never want to see again. I think the R1100RS is one that would be better than most of those. It actually handled pretty well, even by modern standards, due to the telelever front and paralever rear suspensions. It was also quite light compared to most ST bikes of today, what with air cooling and such. The engine was not very thrilling, but there is always something endearing about riding a slow(er) bike fast vs. a faster bike slow.

I rode Carvers KZ1300 the other day and It was really strange how dated it felt. It kinda ran like **** but I still have some carb issues to sort out. The brakes felt like brakes but didn't stop like the brakes we have become used to. Once I get the fueling issue sorted then I can do a better test run.

If you want smokers there is on Bend Or craigslist today a RD200,RD350 and a RD400. prices seem to vary with condition.

Why.... have gone to one of concerts several years ago, she will spend the 90% in the bathroom changing and she comes out she will lip sync while looking totally bored.....

Cher is not hubba hubba she is downright scary. The relatively fridged weather in Chandler must be affecting Don. :D

Don's motto is "nine to ninety blind, crippled or crazy" :) :)
Thank you Raymond for explaining the OBVIOUS to Roy and Jim, it also helps if they have false teeth and an Uncle that owns a liquor store! You know, I am Irish!

On topic, FJRay I called on that CHERRY RD350 for sale on Craigslist up in Bend. Already sold and he got full asking price, another SMOKER gets away from me!
