Well - it's been a week since my off and things are starting to get a little clearer. In my heart, I want to continue riding - frankly, I'm not sure there was ever really any doubt. I've still got some thinking to do, but this is my passion and I'm going to take my lesson in stride and, with some additional practice, training, and a new attitude, move forward. It seems illogical to throw the baby out with the bath water, if that makes sense.

So, it's time to start looking at fixing the bike. I have a few questions for ya'll:

1. How can I tell exactly which model number applies to my bike. The owner's manual says "FJR1300T/FJR1300TC". Mine is the non-abs version (North America).

2. When one orders from an OEM parts supplier a piece of the plastics (side cowling, fairing, etc), does it come painted in the factory color with the decals on it, ready to install?

3. For the lower fairing, the fiche for the OEM websites shows a dotted box around the entire part assy, including turn signal assy, decals, insulating pads, etc. Does this mean if I order the entire assy, it will come with all of these parts?

4. Again, the fiche for the saddlebags shows as #1 the entire saddlebag (around $450.00 - $500.00). Does anybody know if Yamaha offers a replacement side (lid) cover that comes painted in the factory paint in lieu of replacing the entire bag? I exchanged PM's with garauld (his work is fantastic), but I'm just exploring all options.

5. My left side motor cover is rashed, but the scratches are not very deep. I think I can sand them, use a filler/primer, and then paint. If I wanted to tackle this with a rattle can, can anyone reccommend a product that will work best?

6. It appears that the headlight assy is only sold complete. The front of mine is perfectly fine, but I broke 3 mounting tabs in the wreck. All of the tabs are on the back part of the plastic assy. It looks like this thing can be seperated. I was wondering if anyone had a used (even broken in the front) headlight assy that they would be willing to part with?

7. Finally, there's a problem with my glove box that I cannot figure out. I think a part of it broke and was perhaps ejected in the crash, cause it will not latch. Here are some pics - can anyone tell me what I need to buy?

This forum is great as I have already learned a ton in my research. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather and my return to riding. Thank you again for the help.

"C" is California specific

2. When one orders from an OEM parts supplier a piece of the plastics (side cowling, fairing, etc), does it come painted in the factory color with the decals on it, ready to install?

When ordered for the correct year, they are painted that year's color.

3. For the lower fairing, the fiche for the OEM websites shows a dotted box around the entire part assy, including turn signal assy, decals, insulating pads, etc. Does this mean if I order the entire assy, it will come with all of these parts?

Yep! I'd call the supplier to be certain.

Initially, we COULD order just the cover. IIRC, now you must purchase the unit. That's why I included a link to Garauld...it may be that he can repair and repaint cheaper than replacement cost.

Check Bin of Facts in the FAQ section. IIRC, the Colorite paint number is there. The left side cover is for the stator, make sure it's not leaking oil.

You can try motorcycle wrecking yards. Be prepared with your cost before you start shopping used. If it happened to be a wrecked bike they probably have the same issue unless it was a rear-ended motorcycle.

It appears the entire button and latch are missing. Are those parts available separately? I'm guessing you'll have to buy the assembly.

I could be wrong here but when my glove box won't latch I had to buy a complete one. It doesn't break down in smaller parts. Comes as a complete unit.

Well, I will have to think of something on the glove box - I ain't buying the whole thing for a latch. Security is not an issue (it's not like the sucker is secure anyway).

Many of you have PM'd me with well wishes, as well as great help and offers for parts. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

You might want to think "luggage" locks or like a small tool box or jewelry case. Just for places to LOOK.

I agree, they are not all that secure. My lock is disabled so I can open mine whenever I want without the key in the ignition. I don't store anything valuable in there...well...extra fuses are valuable if one needs them.

P.S. I haven't forgotten the photo...just need the time.

Glad you're ok. One thing to consider is a comparison with a serious car wreck. How many times do people who've wrecked cars considered the possibility of stopping driving forever afterwards? It's pretty rare. With bikes it seems a result of conditioning by all the people around us that keep asking us to stop riding and wringing their hands when we don't.

The following parts are what I need:

Front Stay

Left Mirror

left windscreen bracket wing

stator cover

glove box latch (likely sold as a glove box assy)

headlight assy

Plus some plastics. Can ya'll confirm that, with the exception of the plastics (which are painted for my specific year), all of the parts I need are fully interchangable for the '03-'05 FJR? Looking at some used parts -thanks.

Take a look at the FJR comparison matrix, a handy resource. For example, the glove box was not introduced until the '04 model.

Well, I've ordered most of my parts now. Some used, most new.

I researched at least 15 OEM re-sellers and by far, the cheapest was Partshark.com.

Not plugging them yet as I have not received my order, but I'm keeping a good thought.

Much thanks to those responsible for compiling the list of parts sources.

Stay tuned...

Good on you for keeping your head in the game, with new understanding.. Now make it happen - with corrections in place.

I thought I'd update you on my progress, and ask a question or two. I have received most of my parts, some used and some new. Other FJR members have helped me a lot and I appreciate that tremendously. I put the bike back together this afternoon and I must say that re-assembling the plastics on this bike brings a whole new meaning to the term PITA!!

I still have a glove box problem that will get fixed when the right used box comes along on fleabay. I'm waiting for Gary to return ship my saddle bag lid, and I'm hopeful I will get that next week. Other than that, I need to order the stator cover (if a good used one doesn't show). And I need one more part, but I can't find it on the fiche. It's the part that holds dash panel "A" to the frame, circled in red below:

L-opening.jpg

I can't seem to locate it on any OEM fiche. Do any of you know what that part is?

On another note, I'm definitely not giving up my passion of riding. I can't imagine I ever really gave it serious thought. I rode the bike about 425 miles last weekend with no plastics, and I had a blast. I'm taking it conservatively, and I'm trying to re-learn some good habits along the way. Lots of parking lot practice, blow the dust of the Proficient Motorcycling book, etc. I'm planning a long Arkansas weekend at the end of the month.

Appreciate all of the help.

It might be 29 Mike, but I'm not real sure. I can't tell how that part in the fiche attached to both the bike frame and panel A. I'm going to take a better picture of the missing part on my bike, and post it here for a better look.

It's a good feeling to be down to these little parts in fixing the bike. :yahoo:

It's the only "attachment" I saw the mounts to the main frame, that's why I guessed.....

Everything else is a simple metal C-clip.

The part #29 is a plastic clamp with double sided tape that holds the left t/s wiring and mounts to the upper cowling. Here's a few pictures of what I need:

Here's where it mounts to the left side of the frame:

here's panel A pointing to the hole that the allen head screw goes through to mount to this missing piece:

here's what I think might be a similar piece on the right side for panel D

What about #35 on the frame fiche, but shown upside down on the fiche?

Also, I have a few other questions:

1. Gary tells me that some of you choose to remove the rectangular red reflectors on the saddle bags. I need a left one - does anybody have one that they would be willing to part with?

2. One of my fork seals is sweating just a little. Surprisingly, FJRtech does not appear to have a fork seal change article. On the fork fiche, it looks like I need 6.7.29,and 30 (seals and dust covers). Correct? I've got a shop manual on back order, but from the parts breakdown, it looks kind of like the other fork seals I've changed. Take out the lower bolt and use the inner fork tube as a slide hammer to drive the seal out. Does that sound about right?

3. I just learned that the crash broke the right saddle back latch assy, circled in red here - does anyone have one that they could part with?

saddlebaglatch.jpg

That's all for now and thanks very much.

This is an edit to my previous post.

(How does one edit a post?) :baaasmiley:

Unbelievably, I found most of the broken Panel A support piece wedged near the radiator neck. The hole that is used for the bolt that goes into the frame was 1/2 broken. I was able to re-attach it with only 1/2 a hole and surprisingly it is very stout. So that part is fixed.

Also editing, I just read FJRed's fork seal thread, so I'm getting a better idea on that.

Slowly but surely getting there, having fun along the way.

Cowling 2; # 46, 48 & 49: #46 is Bracket 1, part number 5JW-2836A-00-00

(47 is the same bracket for the right side; 48 is the attaching screw, 49 is the spring clip/nut the fairing screw attaches to).

BTW, according to Cowling 1, the dash latches ARE available: Numbers 71-74.

Editing a post is not available to members until after 100 posts, IIRC. I've barely made it...

Excellent Mike thanks for finding that bracket part. I will be adding that to my next order I'm also going to get the glove box latch.

I just wanted to chime in another plug for Garauld's painting miracles.

I'm going to cross post this in the appropriate vendor board. Thanks again Gary.

I'm packed and loaded for my first long weekend on the FJR. Planning about 1500 miles in the Ozark Mountains. Each saddlebag weighs exactly 20 pounds loaded. I don't suppose that is too heavy? The dream and my passion are still very much alive. :yahoo:

Great read!! So happy to see that you're body & soul have mended as well as your bike.

Have a wonderful safe trip & make sure you give us a ride report when you get back.
