For like, what --- 15 minutes a year???

Just think, in about a month, it's gonna look like this:

Snowplow.JPG

But seriously, it looks like Duluth to Thunder Bay would be a joyful ride. Is it?

Then, over-the-top from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie on Canada 17. Looks yummie on a map.

If I come up next summer for a ride, you gonna go with me???

(and put me up for a night or two?)

As long as you're not having an illicit affair with GASP a snowmobile, then miss Yammie will stay happy.. Otherwise... oooh... one nasty divorce is on it's way :D
There is NOTHING wrong with riding a snowmobile in the winter. :( That nasty road salt makes it tough to ride my FJR during the winter here in Vermont.

ILLICIT!!?? I will have you know that my Feej and I have an open marriage and there is nothing illicit about my winter-time relationship with 3 other (skiied) females, including a new sister from MamaYama expected to be delievered this month. Get over this small-minded, provincial attitude Don! :D

FastJoyRide, so what's the "new sister from MamaYama" ??

My husband and I take a two week vacation every year on the bikes...my FJR and his Wing. We camp most of the time unless it is really HOT or raining. We love it. I want to get one of those lovely rear racks I saw on the forum....I hate the racks on the '06 more than the '05! At least on the '05 I could rig up my packs to stay on. We will have to plan some trips up your way and do some weekend camping trips at your campground. I love your part of the state and would move in a second if I could. BUT, we have a business in Creswell and with the price of property going up in your area...I think we'll stay put for now. But definitely we will all get together this summer. We do a few rides in the winter but when the rain starts in the Willamette Valley it usually doesn't stop until May or June. As for the lovely winters in So. California, I lived in Long Beach for 25 years and although the weather allows riding every day...the traffic is so horrid that you have to ride for miles to get out of town so you can find a road to open up on. We finally gave up and left the state. Yes, I love the weather there...just couldn't take the over population any more. SO, enjoy your great winter rides...I'll enjoy the quiet of the Oregon country.

Well Dave, what I can I say? I guess I'm just going to have to head north of the border and have you widen my narrow focus... you know, teach me how to say eh? after every sentence, convert litters err. litres to gallons, of was it Imperial something or the others? :D
Besides, your FJR and me had a talk... she wants her own **** job done.. the one that affixes skis to the front and tread on the back.. The FJR1300 snowmobile... now that would be cool! :D .

FJRay, Good to hear from you. My wife and I are the owners of Hidden Pines RV Park not too far out of La Pine just off Burgess Rd. Stop by and say Hi.

Do you guys have tent camping available?

I've ridden across the country a couple of times this year, got to drive out to Cali again....

BUT, I'm really getting tired of the superslabs... ! <G>

I searched, but you guys dont' have a web page, do you?

I did find a couple of referrals in Camping World's forums that gave your adress, tho...

Mary
We do have tent camping, although this time of year (Nov 1 to April 15) we have our rest rooms and showers shut down and winterized.

We have a small store, Laundry and 12 full hook-up sites that we keep open through the winter. April 15th things start to rock and everything is opened back up.

We are a Good Sam park off the beaten path. Clean and Quiet is what we have to offer. We would love to see you.

Oh, BTW we give a 15% discount to all that come in on motorcycles.
Me thinks you could/should post some pix of your campground under the Vendors section of the board.. I would have seen you last summer had I known.. Take advantage of all this free exposure, generate some revune for the farkle list.. :D

Good Idea, I will do that. Central Oregon has some of the best riding in the state. It would be fun to bring in more riders and share what we have.

I put away three on Sunday: FJR, CBRXX and Seca II. Batteries out and in the utility to room to keep charged all winter (along with the two deep-cycle batteries from the camp trailer), fresh oil in the crankcases, fuel tanks topped off and Stabil added. Even put the FJR on blocks to prevent tire flat spots. All now cozy under old bedsheets. The FJR gets the spot in the garage, the other two relegated to the shed. In case you're wondering about the Seca, it's my kid's learner, but he moved to Washington so I'm thinking of trying to get my spouse riding. We tried this back in about 1990 (Suzuki 550 L) but she was terrified and I wound up terrified watching her. But she is so much more confident now when it comes to motorcycling and seems open to giving it another shot. We've been riding together for 22 years, but doing some serious sport-touring the last 15 - Alberta, British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Idaho, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona. Even toured the upper Mississippi Valley a few years back.

Here in Montana, if we can go March-October, we've had a good year, though we get these warm spells (60 degrees today) that can happen any time, called a Chinook. I've seen over 70 in January (rare). Yes, we've got to go on hiatus for awhile, but we also have access to some of the best motorcycling in the country literally beginning at the end of the driveway: great roads, fabulous scenery, little traffic (except the four-lane during the summer when it gets clogged by tourist Winnebagos, and which we never, ever ride anyway). And we stay out of Glacier and Yellowstone between June 1 and Agust 31 - let the touri have 'em. Besides, the best riding is elsewhere, and "I can't drive 45" all day.

xcsp: Despite living in the flatlands Sylvia and I prefer to ride our sleds in the mountains. Her current sled is a 2002 Ski-Doo Renegade 800, which has been flawless since new, but is getting a little long in the tooth. I spring-ordered a new Phazer Mountain-Lite for her, the first 4-stroke sled which has appealed to me/us. Its only 500cc, but is basically two 250 Yamaha motocross singles grafted together to put out 85 HP. Around 515 pounds, which is light for a 4-stroke, and it has electronic reverse, electric start (a must for her) and a 144" X 15" X 2" paddle track, so it will be a hoot to ride in the fluff. Although down on HP, it has similar torque to what she rides now, and should be much more fun to ride for her. And it came with a free 3 year engine warranty as a pre-order (got to love that PDP system  )

Don: Anytime you can get away, we would be happy to introduce you to the particular charms of going fast (and slow) on frozen water! A lot more appealing to your dirt-biking side, than your ST side. There are places we ride in the mountains in BC, that are only accessible by snowmobile in Winter, horse/foot in Summer, or by helicopter. No ATV's allowed in Summer, eh? :D

If you like motox then you would love snowmobiles.

If you haven't been on or around sleds keep these thoughts in mind:

There are just as many different types of snowmobiles as there are motorcycles...i.e....touring, performance, bump sleds, cross country, snowX, mountain sleds, powder sleds, etc. They are all very specialized in their own right and are completely like apples to oranges in comparison to each other. About the only thing common about them is that they all have skis and a track.

We ride a lot of cross country trips in Canada that cover an average of 250 miles per day on the trails. It ain't like riding around the back yard or playing in a field like most people think of snowmobiling. Last time I covered 90 miles cross country on a dirt bike I was completely whipped. You'll be the same after 90 miles of whoops on a nasty trail on a sled.

Ontario, Canada, has more miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the winter time than they do paved roads. You can go just about anywhere you want on the network of marked and groomed trails.

Ride the "corridor de nor" from Hearst to Cochran, Ontario. Average speed on those trails (once away from towns and normal congestion) is about 100.....mph that is.... Pretty quick way to cover 200 miles.

Forget anything you have heard or read about snowmobiles of yesteryear. They will corner like a go-kart, take any sort of bumps, run flat out for far longer than you want and they will take this day in and day out without a problem. Every lake becomes the Bonneville Salt Flats. Reliable and snowmobile can now be mentioned in the same sentence.

With the suspension technology incorporated in the mid-to-late 90's the sleds became a lot like motocross bikes. Whoops...???....no problem. Dial up the throttle and hang on. They go thru the bumps just like a motocrosser.

Plus...snow is nice and clean. No dust and dirt and mud to deal with and wash off later.

There is such an extensive network of snowmobile trails in Canada and most of the northern United States that you could leave Midland, Michigan (given good snow conditions) and ride to the west coast or east coast totally on snowmobile trails.

The only thing jestal didn't say or might not have known is the snow never seems to co-operate when you go coast to coast...a group of us tried it 6 years ago & had to rely on the kindness of various clubs to get us across areas that didn't have snow....it was a blast (then again that was before I had both shoulders rebuilt)....I always said snowmobiling was just winter motocross riding  ....

That was covered in the "given good snow conditions" caveat....... :D :D :D

We've been stranded a few times ourselves by sudden snowmelt, rain, slush, etc. Things can go to **** pretty fast going cross country on a snowmobile when the weather changes. All part of the fun!!

We rode the old rail road grade north out of Grand Rapids, Michigan one morning. Beautiful trail conditions. Plenty of snow. Made it up around Cadillac. Weather warmed up. Nothing but gravel on that rail road grade by afternoon. Had to call the wife for a trailer pickup and endure all sorts of grief. Luckily we were close to home.

There still is no easy/legal way to go north out of Thunder Bay due to trail closures so the local clubs help with a trailer ride when trying to ride around Lake Superior.

We shipped our sleds (2000 Yamaha's 700 Vmax deluxe's) via railway to B.C. & attempted to ride through to the east coast (ran with tour buddies, tank & saddle bags) it was a once in a life time experience....well worth the time & commitment....& hole in the bank account :D ....

I would love to try that trip one day.

We did a neat trip a number of years ago. We rode from Sault Ste. Marie up across Ontario to Cochran. Hooked up with a guide there and rode north off the trail all the way to the tip of Hudson Bay (James Bay actually) at Moosenee. We then rode the ice on James Bay all the way across to Fort Rupert (or Waskegenon as it is known now). Had to have fuel delivered to us on James Bay via bush plane set up by the guide we worked with. From Fort Rupert we rode and ice highway and the bush all the way down into Quebec to Mattagami and from there back to Sault Ste Marie. That was the first time anyone in the area of Moosenee or Fort Rupert knew of a group of snowmobiles making that crossing. We rode almost 2000 miles in the bush off trail besides the trail mileage up across Ontario and back down thru Quebec. The local Cree Indians met us as guides crossing James Bay since the guide we worked with in Moosenee had contacted them by radio. It was a pretty neat experience.

hmm. sounds like a different thread guyz.. although it IS interesting... from a guy who has never been on a sled...

Maybe have a couple maps marked with good rides available in the area for bikers coming through?
