If there was one album, to make everyone here listen to, what would it be?

Majic,

+1 what cha said on Motown.

You da man. I grew up in Detroit in the 60's. It was magical. Detroit radio stations had it going on. I was in the right place at the right time, foe-show.

Gary, Detroit? In the 60's? You were smack dab in the middle of all of it. Back then, Motown must have been on an endless loop on the air waves. It was the same thing in NYC back then. Loved every minute of it. It was all of my white boy friends in high school that turned me on to everything else. Ahhhhhhhh..... The memories! :)

I got turned on to Papa John Creach when I was in high school. Awesome!
First heard him when he played with Starship. He had some solo albums after that which were very likeable. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah, Bounce. That Man was a Blues Fiddle Playin' "Rainman". It gave me goose bumps listening to the man play! :)

Back in the day in NYC, all the heavy hitters would treat the city with teasers just before their concerts. The Rolling Stones rented a semi length flat bed and played music on it while driving around the streets of Manhattan. Starship did some songs at the fountain in Central Park. The number one music station in NYC back then was WNEW. The radio station mentioned that the Starship was going to play a few songs at the fountain in 30 minutes. They did that one time, on one station and in 20 minutes, there were 70,000 people there. Damn, I miss that stuff. :)

The best radio station I ever listned to was 94.7, A Little Bit of Heaven, KMET, (tweedle dee!) in the early 70's, in the City of the Angels.

The DJ's?

Mary the Burner Turner

Patton - Tanks alot, LA, for turning me on!

and the best - Jim Ladd, mixing various songs midway from multiple artists to support the theme. He was soo good then.

I listen to Jim on Deep Tracks Sirius now, every night on the ride home from work. It's not the same. But back then, working the 22:00 to 0:600 shift in the print shop, with the Marantz 8080 cooking through huge JBL's, life was good. The sound of printing presses at full song and wonderful music presented by Jim reverberates strongly with me now, many years later.

I'm echoing the old and white comments...I too am a child of 80's music, and worked as a DJ for a while right out of high school (mobile; did mostly proms, grad nights and some private parties).

My tastes now run to more creative stuff, and there are a few I haven't seen mentioned, along with my personal favorites:

Rush

Dream Theater

Porcupine Tree

Muse

Cage the Elephant

30 Seconds to Mars

Shinedown

System of a Down

Nirvana

Pearl Jam

Soundgarden

Stone Temple Pilots

Amy Winehouse

Audioslave

the B-52s

Beastie Boys

Beck

CandleBox

Chris Weaver Band (new up and coming rock/blues group, saw them play a corporate event)

Daughtry

Death Cab for Cutie

Kings of Leon

Kid Rock

THe Killers

Rusted Root

Emeli Sande

OK Go

The Offspring

I currently have over 24K tracks in my iTunes library...and I'm just scratching the surface here!

Crap, forgot Oingo Boingo!

That's quite a list

Music is also a hobby of mine. There are some in there I know I like, so I guess I'll spend some time on Youtube with that list.

My problem, living where I live, is that there's nothing really interesting on the radio, so exposure to new and unusual stuff is rare. Lists like you posted are a treasure. Thx

I stumbled across Phoebe Killdeer the day. I can't explain why, but for some reason she reminds me of Shirley Bassey.

so many 80s groups. so many fails. :D

as bad as the hair bands and disco of the 80s were, they don't hold a fail candle to the emo bands of the 21st century.

One I forgot and don't know how. I first heard him in Laughlin at the River Run a few years ago...The guy is good and these are two of my favorites:

The number one music station in NYC back then was WNEW.
Strange you should bring that up Majic. I just shook my head when I read this recently.
Damn! I remember him. The guy was a legend. Just goes to show, there are freaks all around us. Who knew?! That station had the best of the best DJ's on it 24/7. They had a Sunday morning DJ that was a Catholic Priest. Not Kidding! Inspirational as hell. The guy was great. Swore like a drunken sailor. He did mini sermons that were wonderful and followed them up with the perfect song to bring his point home. Everybody listened to him. My kinda priest! Lmao

From the Greatest Rock band of all time.......

"WHO'S NEXT" by THE WHO.

"Quadrophenia" a close 2nd.

Most balanced album I ever heard.

Wow...you guys are so old & white its not even funny! LMAO.

I grew up in the 80's and yes grew up on big hair 80's bands in High School especially (Def Leppard, Poison, Metallica...etc), but I also listened to Soul / R&B (Al B. Sure, New Edition, Keith Sweat...etc.)

But I prefer more modern rock since all the music from the 70's, 80's and now 90's has been played 19.7 billion times on the radio & my ears will start to bleed if I hear them one more time.

My current bands are....

  • Pappa Roach
  • Thousand Foot Krutch
  • Red
  • Chevelle
  • Tremonti
  • Alter Bridge
  • Three Days Grace
  • Tool
  • Joe Bonamassa (Blues)
I know I'm on a island on this forum in my musical tastes.
Don't forget: Cold, 32 Leaves, Dark New Day, Earshot, Evans Blue, and A Perfect Circle to name a few. That island might not be as small as you might think.

GR, if you're on an Island, I'm a French Model.
Paparoach, Chevelle and Three Days Grace rock. Don't forget Linkin Park, Ministry, Fort Minor, Sevendust, Five Finger Death Punch, Insane Clown Posse, Disturbed...

Hell, I'll listen to almost any of it. Some stuff is just downright stupid though. I have my limits.

****...I really like Nickleback and they constantly get ragged on.
Yay!...I got at least 2 music friends on the forum!!!!

I will say when I'm not in the mood for "my type" of rock music I've been branching out to some blues. Been on a Joe Bonamassa kick lately. Me & wife are seeing him in concert next weekend. He's really freaking talented and is only 35yrs old and has been playing since he was 8yr old!

So my official "must listen to music album" is out of the norm for me but I think lots of guys on this forum would like him.

JOE BONAMASSA - ACOUSTIC LIVE FROM VIENNA

Here' is just one song from that concert "Slow Train".

He is talented, that's for sure! Listening to him, especially when he adjusts the volume while playing, reminds me of the man I mentioned in my opening post. Some great quitarists credit Roy with them wanting to play after hearing him.

If I could embed a YouTube video here, I would. "The Messiah Will Come Again" would be for starters.

SoCal, "Eminence Front" makes me ride about 25mph faster than normal. Love that song! I put on my game face and twist the throttle. :))
LOL............Eminence Front is different for THE WHO that's for sure.

Some of my favorite WHO tunes are "Join Together With the Band" (seldom heard great tune) "Bargain", "Long Live Rock", "5:15," "The Real Me", "Won't Get Fooled Again"..........man there's just too many to list!!

QUESTION for the collective.........how come when I "Share" and "Copy" a video on you tube it doesn't post the vid?? Only the link shows??
