I shopped around and ended up with Kingsway. I hadn't had bike insurance for some years so I was high risk for my SV650. It cost me about $1200.00 per year for the first couple of years but has now dropped to around $875.00. I am considered 3 star (best rating you can get) and my FJR costs me $1250.00 per year now. That's $2125.00 per year for two bikes with a perfect record. OUCH. And don't forget, the Canadian dollar is on par with the US buck. The only other company I could find that was less was State Farm but you have to switch you car insurance over to them (which is probably where they make up the diff).

Bit of a side note; I did have to make a claim on my SV650 policy. Got cut off and totaled my "03 SV. Since I didn't hit the minivan who cut me off I was considered at fault! My premiums were on their way up, but the agent handling the claim argued in my favor and they changed their minds. So, even though I'm paying large, I have good things to say about Kingsway.

Just my 2 cents.

Today i got 2 differrent quotes , one from Allstate was 905 and Statefarm 545, man almost 50% in difference, but my cars were the reverse low with Allstate and high with Statefarm so it basicly came to the same amount at the end, they got us by the balls :angry2:

Last I was with Riders Plus (broker) and they changed companies to Echilon and they black listed the FJR and wanted $1500.00 for the same coverage.
Odd..I am still with Riders Plus (Brokering for Echelon) and my 04 FJR comes in at half that. They have not black listed my FJR.

But I am going to call https://www.daltontimmis.com/.

Update....Dalton Timmins (in my post above) beat absolutely everyone. Well worth the call for Canadian Insurance.

I've been insured with State Farm for over 20yrs and being accident free (too bad my wife can't say the same) all our policies enjoy their largest long term discounts. Even the first large loss is forgiven once attaining the max discount.

My 06FJR has 2M liab, $500 ded Comp, no Coll & my price is $891/yr.

Even though some may say that coverage can be puchased for less or that my cars are overpriced with State Farm (my 04 Maxima is $420 for 6 months including coll) I disagree. There have been too many friends of mine that choose bargain rate companies only to find that when the market gets tight their bike insurance company gets out of the bike business. Hassle city!! And if you have a claim... well you may just get an experience equal to what you paid!

As a customer that has had 3 not-at-fault auto claims (two were total write offs), my wife had one at fault, and two claims (one substantial claim on our house) that were not auto related - I can say that State Farm really is prepared to followup with their promises! That is worth something to me.

When I moved from Vancouver to Edmonton, my insurance went down to the level outlined in Bearly's post above. I've self-insured all physical damage for 30+ years on all of my bikes due to the predatory pricing of that product in Canada, and I have saved enough premium $$ to replace 4 or 5 bikes by now (though I've never needed to). Then when I moved back to a mandatory government insurance province, Saskatchewan, my premiums went up to the $1,200 level for $1 Million PL/PD only. This is a blatant rip-off, but they do pro-rate for the riding season, so effectively I spend around $750 per year.
I am not an insurance expert, but I'm told the justification for this is the "no-fault" nature of motor vehicle insurance in both BC and SK (not in Alberta). What this means is that when some BDC turns left in front of a bike putting the rider in the hospital for 6 months, the RIDER'S insurance pays out for all of the medical costs, lost income etc. Then when the actuaries total up the premiums and claims from motorcycle insurance they jack-up the premiums to cover all of the claims - WHICH IN MANY CASES WERE NOT THE BIKE RIDER'S FAULT!

I know there are lots of BDR's involved in single vehicle bike accidents wearing none of the gear, none of the time, who also run up the cost of insurance for all of us, but even if NO rider was responsible for ANY accident, EVER our bike insurance costs would still be ludicrous. Sorry for shouting but this whole topic is a sore point for me - could you tell?!

Hi,

I just moved back to Canada from California.

I'm originally from Quebec but "Snow Country" just doesn't appeal to me anymore after being in Southern California for 7 years...

So I decided to stay on the West Coast. Bit more rain but you don't have to scape your car windows in the winter...

On the other end, I am also struck with INSANE ICBC Insurance rates!!!

I just received my "inspection papers" from Transport Canada for my FJR and when I went to get my car insured, I was told that I could also use some private insurance to cover my bike, that it should be cheaper...

Does anybody know a good Private Insurance Company in/around Vancouver?

Thanks a lot!
