It's HOT. Are You Still ATGATT?

ATGATT

Textile jacket, pants, FF Helmet, Held Gloves, AlpineStar boots. This year, leaving my mesh gear hanging in the closet (trying something new I learned here). 100+ temps are the norm here in Vegas, just have to stay hydrated. Something to remember about ATGATT and risk management... Dehydration and heat exhaustion are very real threats. I'm sure several members of the forum can attest to that fact. Stay hydrated.

I don't preach ATGATT, but I will give an opinion when asked. My brother wears his half-helmet and shades, so what? It's his choice. He knows the risks. Although... I do laugh at the end of a long day of riding when he starts bitching about his sunburn.

Still ATGATT. Just lighter jacket, no liners, and all vents open. There's also the cool vest.

Thsese things are just too fun to step inside and watch from the safety of our glass houses. I'll just read some more later.

Ride safe guys.... and gals.

Yup: I have a problem with people who think they know what is good for every one else. We had the problem a few years back where they taxed the hell out of everything above 700CC to help Harly.

Doesn't matter to me how you ride. Take it all off if you like.
I do hope I'm not paying for your medical support at some point....
GUNNY!

Therein lies the rub. Your actions eventually do affect me. Don't think otherwise.
Now, see, that logic just doesn't fit to me. By the application of that logic, I couldn't choose to live someplace like New Orleans because it might get hit by a hurricane and cost you money. Or, I couldn't live in California, because there might be an earthquake or wildfire. Heaven forbid if I want to live on the banks of the Mississippi! We all know who pays for these things!

I should never fly in an airplane for my job because sometimes, those things fall out of the sky. In fact, I should never even go to a stupid hospital. If they make a mistake with dosage, I could be a non-productive member on life support forever!!! OMG! I can't even get in my frickin' car! That rare plane that falls from the sky could land on ME!!! Worse, it could cost YOU!

Folks, please. All of our actions affect us all. We are all a small part of a larger whole. We collectively take care of the collective. I think that is why they call it a society. And, within reason, I get to chose what part I play in the collective.

As a collective society, the "whole" decides what is and what is not a "reasonable" role for the individual. Surely, we, of all people in this society, don't want to bring "motorcycles and their risks" to the table of consideration.
Well put, Scab. Yeah, we're all in this together, but I too draw the line at giving others "veto power" over my choices (at least the choices that are still open to me.)

On the other hand (and in keeping with the question behind the original post), I wasn't asking what we all should do, but what you do do. There have been a couple incidents in the news about celebrities making public political statements that some found offensive, and being criticized by the public for it. In some cases, scheduled engagements were canceled. And a great howling came up about their freedom of speech rights and "censorship." Of course, it wasn't about that. The public was turned off and the entrepreneurs who had hired them didn't want to deal with protests or boycotts over side issues not connected to their performance. Not censorship. Business.

In case that's too obscure, the point is that with the exception of helmet laws here and there, nobody is or should be telling you what to wear when you ride. I know ATGATT is a wise policy. I just hope it never becomes mandatory.

Bingo. No one should force something down your throat. Either way.

I know ATGATT is a wise policy. I just hope it never becomes mandatory.
Bingo, again. And I whole heartily agree about mandating. Last thing I want is more regulation - that costs me too. Folks should use the common sense that they already possess (yes, I'm giving some folks waaaaaaaay to much credit).

Nicely said, Mike. You did a much better job than I did. Props, yo. :good:

Damn, had to Google ATGATT to know what's up.

I always ride with full face helmet, boots, gloves, and, dungarees. (Las Cruces, NM, hits 110 a lot in the summer.) Most of the time I wear a Joe Rocket red jacket. That's about it, except in winter when I trade in the jacket for some leather, and maybe leather chaps, too.

In the course of reading this thread I realized a sad but true fact. I've never once in my life experienced the exhilarating thrill of riding sans helmet. What am I missing here?

I'll have to set that straight tout de' suite

I'm surprised that this thread hasn't found its way over to NEPRT, or even total oblivion given the political content.

The original question, i.e., "are you still atgatt?" is sorta pointless, isn't it? I mean, whose going to change their own habits based on a poll like this?

I suppose peer pressure is a factor in what folks choose to wear... but the real poll that counts on this is each individual's inner poll. When my kids were small, I stopped riding all together because of the risk for my wife and family. I didn't do a survey to find out if other folks stopped riding when they're kids were small. I missed it every year, but I made the sacrifice.

Now I don't think about who is wearing what. I don't care what anyone else is wearing.

I do have a responsible role model type position where young people in their late teens and early 20's see me all the time, and since I teach the IC engines senior elective for mechanical engineering students, I make it a point that they see that I do wear all the gear all the time. I don't preach about it, but if I see one of the kids under my charge riding with sandals and shorts, I'll make a humorous comment about road rash (if there are humorous comments about road rash). With some kids who are close to me either through work in the lab, or through participation on the formula car team, I'll comment "You know, I wouldn't make this point if I didn't care about you."

We've already got the socialism part of this going.... if you make your personal choice to not be careful, the rest of us will likely be footing the bill for your choice if your choice turns out to be wrong. But we also have personal choice about smoking (to a lesser extent than we used to have), and we have personal choice about diet (that's the next area where big brother will intervene - in Japan they are measuring employee waist lines and weights and fining companies whose employees are too large). I like personal freedom myself, and no one who knows me would consider me to be politically correct.

So.... will this thread live or die? Tomorrow's Friday! Maybe it will live at least one more day.

Boy, this got really deep.

ATGATT. There was a thread like this one about ten days or so ago. In it, I promised to give a review of a Texas Cool Vest that I bought. No evaporation, uses a NASA product (there are some advantages of living in Hootin') that changes state at 65F. Problem is, I set up my grandkids Slip&Slide and was foolish enough to try it out. Probably four bruised ribs. Sunday I got stung by a black hornet, right in my upper side, so needless to say, I haven't been up for too much long range riding. I'll check it out this Sunday and report back. Assuming I don't do something stupid again (Ray?)
