Learned a lesson today. My dealer was out of the appropriate Yamaha oil filter for my FJR. So I went to the net to find a substitute. Found a number of filters listed at www.fjrinfo. Found out the hard way that the motorcraft FL-821 filter is not a good sub. Changed oil and filter only to have oil gush from the engine onto my driveway when i started the bike. Not a knock on this website, it doesn't claim that this is a perfect match. Just a FYI in case someone is tempted to try this filter. It screws on just fine, but will not seal. I ended up using a FRAM filter. Wouldnt have been my first choice, but it worked in a pinch.

I sure will put a couple yamaha filters on my shelf when my dealer replenishes his supply .

BOSCH OIL FILTER 3323 works equally as well as o.e. m, all had for $6.00

The Purolator Pure One PL14612 is the 2.5" length

The Purolator Pure One PL14610 is the 3.25" length

I started out with the OEM, went to the Purolator mentioned above for a while, and am now currently back to the OEM. Though at this moment, I have a Mobil1 M1-110 filter installed. Another highly rated, but pri$ey filter.

This will probably get the thread to the NEPRT but: there's nothing wrong with Fram. Been using them for over thirty years on most all my cars; never a problem. On the FJR I use the factory filter just because of all the talk about improper sealing with some of the alternatives. (plus buying in bulk from University is the economical way to go) I would be more concerned with the stainless steel (never change, only clean) filter. That filter only filters to 35 microns.

ST7317 from WallyWorld.. $2 each. As far as I can tell it is identical to the Bosch. It is usually located right across the aisle from the Shell Rotella T Synthetic. Easy one stop shopping. Save your $$ for tires.

You can also use the Honda oil filter for the 4847289847 engines that it fits; use the one from the 1996 and up CBR600F4i, or the VT1100 Shadow engine. I bought a case last year and have been using them. They x-ref directly over.

I have used several frams on this Yamaha as well as my old 85 Honda, for 20 years. I have never had a problem. You will not find anything positive about fram filters on this forum but I wouldn't worry about it. IMHO fram filters are not bad but there are better.
