With copious amounts of salt being spread on the roads here now decided to have a go at making some protection for the rear linkage like the Dutch police have.

Long flap from eBay plus some M8 threaded rod & nuts got the job done & with two Wing nut bolts holding the flap on, it's easy enough to take it off for the summer. A handy point as I initially stuck it on back to front, doh!

Had to dodge two salt trucks spreading today on the motorway so hopefully this'll do the job.

Next one I'll make a wee bit shorter.

That is very cool! Great innovation. Can you show exactly how it is attached? Is it hinged? Thanks for any additional info.

It's just a M8 threaded rod cut to length put through the exhaust mounting brackets. Removed the two Allen bolts & threaded the rod through. Takes a while. Couple of washers, nylock nuts & two capped nuts to finish it off.
I''d already drilled two M4 holes in the rod. Then clamped the flap on using two bits of Meccano to keep the top part vertical. I put two M4 Wingnut bolts in so I can remove the flap in the summer. The large flap is on eBay here for £12.95. The rod & nuts cost me £2.

I think you'll find just as much gunk gumming up the works as before. The rear wheel contributes most of what goes up in the air off the road back there. Yes, even though the linkage is in front of the rear wheel.

Maybe some type of "mudflap" to extend down in front of the rear wheel would help? Would need to be less flexible so it doesn't just get pushed into the rear tire.
