Thread not dead !! 
This is what I came up with.
I mount the GPS between the bars on a 5" "I got balls" stem mount. The tail of the cable is long enough to thread and lock through the retaining clips for the brake cables, without interfering with steering, etc. THe cable is 1/16" -- couldn't go bigger as that is the biggest hole I could safely drill into the lower bezel. Of course, this will only deter the opportunistic thief, and not a person armed with a folding knife/pliers/cutter combo unit who really wants the GPS.
Still ....... better than nothing and cost me less than $5.00
