Watching your mirrors is great but you can't always just drop the clutch when sitting at a red light-especially if you are last in line in a group.. I was in my truck following a car when we came up on a huge group of Harleys stopped in the road waiting for a car up front to make a left. The guy in the car ahead of me must have been playing with his **** because he ran right into the bikes, nailing his brakes at the last second. I watched a Harley guy have grand mal siezures and die right in front of me. This happened about a mile from my home and every day I am reminded by the little roadside memorial..
You are absolutely right. Watching your mirrors and the other traffic around you does little good unless you plan an escape route and leave room to use that route. And no matter what you do or prepare for, there is always risk. We can't be prepare for every possible problem, but we can do our best.
Sad day for everyone!

I've always watched my mirrors while approaching or stopped at an intersection, but lately have been questioning whether I could react fast enough to avoid the inattentive ***** coming up from behind. For me, the way some folks brake at the last minute, it's hard to tell whether they're going to stop or plow into me. So my recognition time coupled with reaction time plus time for bike to get moving... Just hoping I could at least get out of the squeeze zone and minimize impact.

Indeed - heartbreaking - and yes, there are lessons to be learned.

I am reminded of an accident that took place 20+ years ago on the Mormon Immigrant Trail outside of the Sacramento area as told here.

Prayers and regards to the loved ones.

Bad news for sure. Some people should never be allowed on the road with decent folk. Had another fatality in this area again today..11:00 am, beautiful weather, and some *** hat drunk.

************************************

At 11:00 this morning, state police responded to a fatal accident involving a motorcyle and another vehicle. It happend on Highway 93, near The Best Stop. We have a crew on the scene and will have more information later in the day.

OMG.. I feel for all involved, even the truck driver. One moment of carelessness with life long ramifications for all concerned.
I agree.

I'm not defending his actions, but if we're all honest enough, most of us have done things in our lives that could have ended very badly.I have seen the remorse of someone who's mistake has costed other people their lives.I'll guarantee you this truck driver is not looking at a bed of roses for the rest of his life.

Prayers sent.

What we do affects others...and the rippling affect of our actions continues for a long time.

May heavenly mercies cover all involved in this tragic event.

Do you know if anyone will be setting up a way to donate from out of state (i.e. Paypal) to help the families out?

Just awful.

Somewhat ironic that this happened (or maybe not ironic - coincidental?) right after the thread was posted about lane-splitting potentially being legalized here. I don't know how much traffic there was in this case, but you have to think if these guys were in between the lanes, even with the other cars, they would have fared a lot better than they did sitting at the back. And probably minutes after this happened, before I knew anything about it, I was discussing the idea of lanesplitting with my wife and saying how collisions from the rear, while very scary for bikers, are actually not all that common. Doesn't matter if you're one of the unlucky few to be involved, I suppose.

I apologize for the late notice of this, just returned from a FJR Forum motorcycle ride to California! The Services for killed M/C Rider Clyde Nachand is today at 0900.

Just read this from the Phoenix Patriot Guard, of which Clyde was an active member. Clyde was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran, a Fellow Gunnery Artilleryman!

And we mourn,

Last week gave the Country a clear visual of a motorcycles vulnerablity to

most any other vehicle, this time a dump truck and a preoccupied driver.

America lost a decorated Viet Nam Veteran. Clyde's Family lost a Husband, a

Father and Grandfather, Patriot Guard Riders lost a Brother. ALR and VFW

has lost a Brother as well. This man touched so many, how blessed are we

that we shared a small part.

I spoke earlier with Carolyn, Clyde's Daughter. She spoke of how he loved

riding with us and standing for "his soldiers". There was pride in her

voice and yet, so much sadness at the loss of someone so dear. In honesty

when I saw the name it didn't ring a bell, so many names. BUT, when I saw

the picture...his hugs. His smiles, his words. All came back and I KNEW.

As Patriot Guard Riders we KNOW the hearts of those we stand with. I have

to admit that I don't remember every name, but I do each smile and hug

and....I LOVE my Patriot Guard Family! Clyde was an important part of OUR

Family!

We have been asked to be a part of this day with the Family, now a part of

OUR Family.

The Obituary from the Family:

August 31, 1942 - March 25, 2010

Clyde was a wonderful person, an outstanding father and was taken from us

way too soon. Clyde leaves behind his beloved wife of 43 years Sandra, 3

daughters Michelle (Erik), Susan (Dennis), and Carolyn (Brian) and his

grandchildren Danielle, Collin, Ryan and a granddaughter due this August.

Clyde was commissioned as a Navy Ensign in 1967 where he spent the next 28

years of combined active and reserve life dedicated to his military service

to the United States. During this time, he not only earned himself the rank

of Commander, but also specialized in Special Warfare and was proud to be a

member of HAL 3 SEAWOLVES. Toward the end of his reserve career he assumed

command of the NR 4th MARDIV 1-14 at Treasure Island, took up a start-up

command and created the only fully functional Naval Gunfire Unit in the 5th

Marine Division.

During his 28 years of service he was awarded 15 Commendations and medals.

These included Combat Active Ribbons, Meritorious Unit Commendations, and a

Navy Commendation award with star. He was a dedicated Navy man and proud of

his military service.

In 1971 after returning home from his two tours in Vietnam he completed his

Masters in History. After completing his Masters he moved to the San

Francisco Bay Area. In 1972 he began working in the insurance industry. He

became an insurance broker in 1975 with Lincoln Life and he turned many of

his clients into lifelong friends.

He was an active member in church his entire adult life. He was also a

weekend presenter for Marriage Encounter retreats providing marriage

enrichment for couples for 23 years.

Clyde loved his Harley Davidson and would go out on rides with his friends

in a variety of motorcycle clubs. It wasn't just the riding that he loved.

He loved the biking community which became an extended family. He was

extremely proud to be a part of the Patriot Guard where they would ride to

honor veterans and soldiers. His family finds peace in the fact that he was

doing something that he loved and was with his biking family when he passed.

Clyde was very outgoing and never met a stranger. He lived by the motto

"treat others as you would want to be treated" and would do anything to help

a friend. He was a loving husband, a great Dad to more than just his 3

daughters, and PaPa to his lucky grandchildren and other children that knew

him. He was taken from us much too soon and will be missed terribly.

The family would like to thank all of our friends, neighbors, and the

community for their outpouring of support during our time of grief. The

family would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the emergency

personnel who responded to the scene.

A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at

10:00 AM at the Church of the Beatitudes located at 555 W. Glendale Ave in

Phoenix. Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Beatitudes

Age Link 1548 W. Glendale, Phoenix 85021.

It's sad when any rider is taken prematurely from this life, but especially so for this man. Look at what he had already given, to family and country, and what he had left to give. Sure, I'll be the first in line to joke about HD posers but this man sounds like the genuine article, and someone we would have all been honored to meet. May he RIP and his family be comforted by God.

Just saw this, posted by a friend on Facebook. The first part of the tribute to the fallen riders is extremely moving. These were obviously well loved and respected people.

Just saw on the news there gonna have a candlelight vigil tonite at the connely sports grill a few blocks from the accident site, expecting 3,000 people.

I sent an email to the addy at the end of a youtube clip posted to inquire about donations. Received this response - I hope this will bring them some additional donations:

"John Fox, Organizer Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group" <[email protected]>

...

This is John Fox, Organizer for Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group. We are using the group's email account for this, so sadly instead of a vibrant young lady, you get a doddering old man. :)

Anyone can make a deposit to the account at any Wells Fargo location. Simply put 'FMVF' on the check, and the account number 3598879181 on the deposit slip.

Thank you for your support. There are 10 people involved, so the funds get spread a little thin.

It was just announced that the driver of the Dump Truck that plowed into 9 motorcycles in Phoenix, AZ has been arrested and is being charged with four counts of manslaughter. It was confirmed the driver with under the influence of Meth when he failed to stop and ran into several motorcyclist and four automobiles.

Hopefully, he'll get 30 years for each count, although it won't bring any of the victims back.
