Could just be a hose loose or split.
Unlikely, as hose connections are outside the heater plenum where the core resides, generally they connect at the firewall. Can't find the new miracle sealer, at least until Saturday, when I will talk with my source. I have had good luck with Bars Leak, better luck with Gunk Solder Seal, as pictured-

Often, is a permanent repair, most new cars carry a similar sealer from the factory. Be aware-any coolant system service like a flush and fill will require a re-ap.

My S.O.'s 96 mustang is having a weird problem. The car has recently started to have a kinda funny smell, it smells almost like something is burning, and the windshield and even side windows are getting a weird fog to them. You wipe the fog off, it comes back. I checked the radiator fluid, oil, and radiator fan. All looks fine. Also, if you try to defrost it, it makes is worse.
Anyone have any clue what the heck might do that?

The descriptions certainly sound like that is the culprit. The carpet also was a little wet, with some lovely dirty looking running down the side of the dash. (Stained sara's shoes, hell hath no fury like a women with stained shoes!)
Radman: is this what you were talking about. blue devil
This whole heater-core thing is a real stretch. By the symptoms, this is clearly a gastro-intestinal problem. I would suggest a good doctor and perhaps a change of diet.

Does she really need heat? You can Take the heater hose off where it returns to the engine and bypass the core. I mean, it'll only be cold for the next 4 to 5 months.

Been doing this to the wifes Bonne for 3 years now, thats how much I enjoy doing heater work. In her case though it's a bad blend door motor, common on these piles. At least it stopped full hot, disconnect the core in the summer, back in for winter. Someday, if I'm bored, I'll to the dashectomy, find a 3 year old whose hands can get in there, and fix it. Or not.

There is a very, very easy way to fix this.

Trade the car. That's how I fixed my wife's car. She's happy. I'm in debt but my knuckles and sanity are intact.

Done.... Bought her an 03 ford focus sedan. Good price, very clean, only 45,000 miles. She's happy.

It has tinted windows, nice kenwood stereo, aftermarket speakers, auto everything, and already wired for an amp. (yes I'm putting subs in Sara's car! :) )

Too bad the dealer wouldn't take the Mustang for a trade! Time to sell it on my own or donate it.

Toss some stop leak in it and beef up the rear springs, slap a hitch on theback and use it to haul stuff. Unless it's the 4 banger, in that cause, unload it. Seriously though, some stop leak should cure it and put it in good enough condition to unload.

OK, First I agree it's probably the heater core...or a heater hose. Hoses are more likely to leak, but the cores are often fragile so it could be either one.

However, don't put any **** in there to fix it. You'll only clog the system and it will overheat. It may take some time to clog, but it WILL happen. Especially an older rustang.

Only use that stuff if you need to patch it either in a total pinch (stranded, and plan to fix/flush it later) or if you're selling it and need a quick bandaid to cover a problem.

Once you replace the core, put the fan on fresh air/defrost and spray lysol in the fresh air intaketo kill the smell. Then put baking soda in the car or kitty litter in a ladies hosery (or both) to absorb the remainder of the smell.

Bummer.

Actually, he said

"Too bad the dealer wouldn't take the Mustang for a trade! Time to sell it on my own or donate it."

I had to reread it twice to make sure I had it right before I posted.
