MT. Washington ride

I'm thinking Mt Washington on saturday, later in the day, Bergs. Planning on dinner at Fratello's on saturday. Need to make a reservation, though, popular Italian ristorante. Great food, moderately priced.

Any others out there?

I was just breaking bergs stones since he had a place to be at 1. Before commiting to a time, are there any others interested in doing Mt Washington this Saturday? If so, what time? Keep in mind that the place may (prolly) be packed since it's the July 4th weekend.

Zumo says 5 hours from here. So if I come I'll figure on 6 hours and leave at 7:00. That will be 12 hrs just there and back.

Does anyone know how long to do the mountain without being rushed ?

Maybe; 7:00-1:00 travel, 1:00-5:00 climb mountain, site see & visit, 5:00-11:00 travel

This may be to much for a day trip. Especially from 8:00-11:00 PM watching for Bambi & Bull Winkle

For me 1:00 sounds OK (if I brave it)

To do the road up and back would only take about 30-45 minutes, but it's worth the stop at the top to take a look around and also see the observatory. If you've never done Mt Washington before, and this is advice for all riders, the mountain can have alot of stop and go traffic and has a good slope in spots as well as having a short section of packed dirt. So, if you're apprehensive about stop and go's on an incline, you may wish to consider another time when it is likely to be less crowded. Also, if you hate heights, this may NOT be the ride for you.

Good point about stop & go traffic on holiday (I had not thought of that).

It's not the climb that I'm concerned about, it's all the sadle time for me there & back (although I just got my Russell).

Ya gotta break that thing in sometime! 5 hours is a long haul each way.....if you'd rather go on a weekend that'd be less crowded and you could do an overnight, the White Mountains has fantastic riding and scenery. Plus, Mt Washington deserves a little time to appreciate it......I'd rather not make a long dash and be rushed especially given the potential for nasty holiday traffic IMHO.

I agree. I will keep my eyes on this and maybe we can get together some other time and do some riding.

Also when I get out that way there is some one in the Tilton area I would like to visit.

PM me when you think you might want to go, I'd be happy to go with you if possible. Don't forget that Sunday morning is always a possibilty, would also be less crowded earlier and all the drunks would hopefully be passed out by then.

Does anyone know how long to do the mountain without being rushed ?

Ya gotta take time out for the museum at the top. I'm unwaveringly fond of the "Wall of Death" exhibit. That's not what they call it, but that's what it is. Every person who has met their demise on the mountain gets a little brass plaque that provides some details of the hows and wherefores. My favorites come from the workers who built the cog railway and offed themselves riding improvised sleds down the track at the end of their shifts/lives. It's a fantastic exhibit. I would think 1 hour, minimum, at the top is in order.

If you wanna overnight it, the Dolly Copp campground just down the road from Pinkham Notch offers some of the most sublime campsites I've ever had the pleasure of using. Several are right beside the bracing Peabody River, providing an excellent way to enjoy a frosty cold one after a day of strenuous hiking. A word of caution, though: beware the chipmunks. If you bring oatmeal, you may as well just turn it over to the chipmunks on arrival. They'll get at it anyway, and, handing it over rather than having it confiscated, you'll feel better.

Actually, the high-traffic concern brings up a question I have.

What is the impact on my bike's clutch if it has to endure stop and go traffic on a double-digit % incline?

I think I'm OK for riding up and down, but if it's going to be super busy, I wonder about stopping and starting on switchbacks and the like.

Hi everyone, greetings from MT. Washington Valley. Moved up here in 2004. I can tell you that any Saturday is going to be busy especially a holiday weekend. I have been up a number of times and I also got caught in the traffic and it is not fun it is a challenge. The last time I went up it was stop and go for at least 20 min or so (felt like 2 hrs) your hands go numb and you CANNOT TURN AROUND. Not to scare anyone but just a local giving you all a taste of what to expect on a holiday weekend. Once up it is awesome. Here is another route I take often.

93 North to exit 32 Rt 112 Kangamangus 33 miles take left on Rt. 16 N go thru No. Conway go by MT. Wash. auto road and head into Gorham, look for Rt. 2 west ( left @ light) travel to you get to Rt. 115 (twin Mountain) left then at end take left onto Rt. 3 south wich turns into 93 south (Cannon Mtn) travel about a 1/2 hr and you are back @ exit 32. It's about a 120 mile loop and you will see MT. Wash from every angle. I will be off line for 2 days. Hope this helps.

Just a casual day no set plans but seems to be the route I will at least start at. Be off line till thurs night.

I'm not afraid to say that I am reconsidering as well, just due to the traffic alone. I've done the ride twice and don't feel a burning desire to go during potentially the busiest day of the year. If, however, someone is completely hell bent on going and has never done it before, I would consider it.

If someone has a preference to change the ride to a different day, chime in with the date and perhaps we could all have a better chance at getting a group ride together. I'd also be willing to put a ride plan together, if there was enough interest. There's lots of beautiful rding areas throughout the White Mountains.

I will be in the area for sure on saturday. Riding along is my wife with her Ninja and a friend of mine with pillion on his FJR-wanna-be Harley. Looking to be in that area around 1. Plans are loose at this point, but if you or others would care to confirm a time and a location, I'd be in for a meet/ride.
