I'm at the 600-mile mark and just completed a throttle-body sync (actually they were all in spec so I did nothing) and am now trying to put everything back together. The problem is when I close the fuel tank, it no longer aligns with the two holes on the triple-tee for the bolts! It's about half an inch behind them. This is really frustrating and I did everything correctly -- the heat shield is in place (everything aligns and the quick-release fastener for it is on), the T-bar is on correctly, the fuel tank goes all the way down, but it's half an inch behind. I don't get it. I disconnected the two electrical connectors just in case but it had no effect so they weren't the problem. (I was thinking maybe there was too little slack for them but clearly not.) What can possibly cause this? I was hoping to go riding tomorrow but it looks like that might not happen.

use the force Luke....... I remember this exact question a while back

do a search on tanks ............

B...........

The mount at the front of the tank has rubber bushings that allow the front mount to move. Lift the tank up a little and use a small punch or something to align the holes.

JW

Loosen the rear bolt that the tank pivots on. There is enough "slop" that the tank settles when you raise it. Once you loosen the rear bolt the tank will slip forward enough to align the front bolts, then you can tighten the rear bolt.

Yep, happened to me the first time I raised my tank, loosen rear bolt and use something to help align a bolt hole while starting the other one.

Precisely.

Yup....

No symptoms = no problem.

Sounds like you'll be able to go for that ride tomorrow though. I hope you have a great day.

Maybe my bike's fuel tank is unique....

.......but I've never had to use any pry bar to align the front bolts. When the rear pivot bolt is loose I can move my tank enough to start the two front bolts.

What are you going to pry on? Put a drift punch down threaded holes?

Loosening the rear bolt is what I needed to do. Got it closed! Unfortunately I loosened the bolt too vigorously and lost the nut! It's pretty large yet it's gone without a trace. Does anyone know the measurements of that bolt so I can attempt to buy a replacement before the stores close in two hours? :)

Take the bolt with you. That's what I did.

Smart people (those with "new" experience) use blue loctite when they reassemble.....

and they merely LOOSEN the nut from then on..... ;)

No I'm not joking and no the bin o' facts does not state the size of the bolt/nut, nor does the service manual. But I took the bolt to Home Depot and it looks like it may be M8x1.25, or maybe M8x1.5. They had no appropriate nut in any case so it looks like I'll have to wait for the other stores to open tomorrow. I hate how time-consuming the simplest of tasks can be.

I have successfully lost that nut off the rear of the tank 2x...

Seems maybe I didn't tighten it up all the way or something. But I have this really sweet kit of misc. Metric bolts and nuts.

I can check the size tomorrow if you still need me too.

If I recall correctly, I can lose it 6 more times before I have to refill :)

You want the nut with washer, Home Depot don't have much in the selection of metric stuff and its always a big mess, try ACE Hardware or you can buy a box of assorted metric nuts and bolts from CycleGear. Since most Yamaha dealers here don't seem to carry any parts in stock :angry2: you could try to find a suitable SAE bolt & nut while waiting for the order.

You can order the new one from Yamaha, you need this:

17 95702-08500-00 NUT, WITH WASHER

That's how it is for me when I do stuff the first few times. Thankfully, because of this board, I feel like I can atleast do some of the basic stuff...knowing that if I do mess up...they'll point me to what I should have done or need to do after the appropriate amount of name calling, razzing, etc. This positive and negative reinforcement usually helps me remember for next time...

Still slow after all these years... :)

Yeah ACE Hardware is where I always go for nuts&bolts; it was just closed last night which is why I tried Home Depot first.
