Seein' as the last post mentions Long Island, guess this would be a good time to join myself and fellow (non-FJR) rider Dave onto the ride. He just confirmed the days off this week and, depending on when he gets out on Thurs., we hope to make Kittery by not too late that evening. Probably all depends on how well we guess picking the route up there. After reading about this for the last couple of months, really looking forward to it.

Did anyone remember to put their order in for good weather. I just had a peak at the long term down there and it does not look great for the next few days. While on the topic, I assume this ride will take place regardless of the weather.

Scottie - shouldn't you be looking at the next few "weeks" ? This is the Maritimes (and yeah, yeah, Maine - I know). If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes ....

Reminder to self: Book your freaking rooms !

I would think so, barring a hurricane or freak blizzard. Folks will have paid up hotels, etc... But my fingers will remain crossed for good weather. It would be much more enjoyable.

BTW - the ride is still a month away. I wouldn't worry about current weather predictions just yet... Besides, if it was this weekend coming the 10 day forecast shows nice weather all weekend. Not that I believe it. :glare:

As for what to expect, the daily averages for Mid Coastal Maine on May 21 are Low of 46F, High of 65F. Records go from Freezing to the mid 90's. In other words, pretty much anything could happen weatherwise. ;)

...Can't vouch for any of them, but I'm definitely smelling a field trip!

Legal's is great, very fresh!!

Kelley's is great too, but you have to like the traditional thinner consistency to enjoy it. I've never seen anyone put more clams into their chowder

Being lazy. When is this ride? Friday, Saturday, Sunday the 23rd?

Might like to join up for the Friday part on my way to rangeley ME if that is part of it.

Jack

Hi Jack

You have the dates right. But Friday we will only be going as far north as Freeport, since we'll be stopping a lot that day to sample chowders and take pictures of Maine stuff. Saturday we will be heading more to the east and stopping less to get up to Bar Harbor by the end of the day. Kind of in the wrong direction for Rangeley, which is one of my favorite places on earth, by the way. Can I assume you are headed up for the landlocked salmon fishing?

Both days we'll be traveling mostly on the twisty turney beach front secondary roads for the scenery opportunities and such. If Friday fits into your plans then by all means join us for the day. Love to have you along.

Holy crapola! He's baaaaaaaaack! Finally!

Off subject: Working new job from hell with an hour and 15 minute commute...... I guess a good excuse to ride every day! When it rains it pours, no sooner was I at my place of new employment for two weeks and don't I get a call from the place I wanted to work for originally 12 minutes from home?! Soooo........ might be job swapping again, we'll see.

Went with an Apple Mac-mini for a new CPU as I'm tired of dealing with too many problems with a regular computer- we'll see how this fairs!

On subject: Tentatively working Friday 3-11p on the first day of the ride, off Saturday and Sunday, but have to be back for work Monday morning, so..... might be able to make it for saturday and most of sunday? Will have to wait and see how things pan out.

Fred, thanks a gazillion for carrying the ball on this one..... I'm grateful for all your hard work! I'd prefer that you keep running this show seeing as how you've done the lion's share of the work- I apologize- and since I'm still uncertain as to where I stand on being able to attend any of it or not.

Rushes- offer still stands!

My main concern with going mid-summer is that, especially in the sections in the southern tier (south of Portland) you'd need to be on and off Rte 1 to hit the scenic shore roads. The heavy summer tourist traffic would make the touring much less enjoyable. Yeah, you can get around in it, but since there is no lane splitting in Maine, you'll be caught in some stop and go traffic for sure.

As a bit of a Down East gastronomic teaser:

I've been working up in Bangor for the past 2 weeks (anyone miss me?). On the first day, one of the local guys took us over to a tiny restaurant on the Brewer side of the river for lunch. A tiny hole in the wall sort of shack, but it literally hangs off a cliff over the Penobscot. The point of this lunchtime excursion was that the Eagle's Nest Restaurant serves up possibly the best lobster roll on the planet!!

The plate comes out with a heaping mound of lobster meat piled on it. Savvy locals order theirs with two buns as there is plenty of meat to fill both and still have some left over. There was at least 10 full claws of meat plus some other knuckle pieces in the pile. The meat was sweet and tender and the dressing was not overly mayo'ed up. They serve it on a bed of home made fries and include a side of home made cole slaw. Fantastic! We ate lunch there 3 times a week. ;)

Definitely worth a stop when you are in the area. But Bangor is pretty far from the picturesque coast (~45 mins. west of Bah Hahbah) so the Eagle's Nest wouldn't fit very well into a coast-line ride.
We actually stopped in there for lunch on saturday afternoon, the place was packed but we got the best seat in the place... in front of the window overlooking the river. Let's just say I did not have room for desert after the meal.

HA ha. The only route that the Eagles Nest would be on is your route home. if you choose to make it so.

Those lobstah rolls are so good it's worth going out of your way.

That can be arranged.

Whaddya say Scott ?

We'll talk ;)

Sounds like a plan. We can chat on Friday evening. We plan to meet up with the rest of the crew after we do the Maine 400 rally. I might even have a cigar for you.

Staying at the Casco Bay Inn on Friday night.

OK - I got my room at Casco Bay Inn. A 'king' @ $89.95. I'm not sharing (unless I get a really good offer :p ).

Does this sound like other quoted single rates ?

While I'm at it, what kind of rate should I be looking at for the Bar Harbour Inn? ie - what are y'all paying there? For a SINGLE!

I've got some challenges in getting my poop in order, but Julie is interested and I would really like to make this, even though I don't particularly care for seafood.

Just need to make sure the puppy is taken care of and manage to get us and our stuff to Freeport that Friday night (prob. after work, which should be interesting).

If it wasn't for her insistence on us doing a bicycle trip in Montreal the first weekend of June this would have been a no-brainer.

I hate planning so much.

Oh, here's my "simulated" Friday picture:
